Just about to buy a Juicer. I wanted to know opinions and suggestions for the places to go for fruit and veg. Organic or not. I was hoping to avoid Lidl ,Aldi, Supervalue, Dunnes and Tescos, etc
I am on the Northside in Swords, any help appreciated and welcomed.
Im looking for really good produce to juice

Lidl ,Aldi, Supervalue, Dunnes and Tescos

I thought all their fruit\veg were from the same sources\farms\companies?

If you wanted 100% good produce you could grow your own. No, I'm not being sarcastic!

appreciate the reply. i am not clued in, i didnt think they all came from the same place though? Maybe im wrong. I wanted to get the juicer and begin using it today and everyday though. I kind of need to produce now, growing my own is not an option at the moment.

I've found produce at farmers' markets to be the freshest. I find that most of the organic produce at my local Dunnes mostly comes from abroad - Tesco is even worse, I think. Also, the amount of packaging on fruit & veg in supermarkets is horrendous. By supporting your local farmers' markets you're getting Irish-made organic produce, supporting small farmers by cutting out the middle man, and also buying less packaging.

If you don't have the time to visit your local farmers market - although some run on Saturday mornings - , check out localmarkets.ie. You can order your produce directly online, pay by Laser and get deliveries to your door. Great for families! :-)

In my student days in Dublin, I've found the fruit & veg on Moore Street to be very good value for money. Not sure what about Swords. Google farmers market + swords.

Why do you want to juice? With fruit(think veg is different) you get rid of the good fibre and just keep the sugar. Smoothies would be better but again if you plan on juicing mostly veg I *think* that's different.

thanks Esperanza and Orla. I got this from a site:

"Not that there is anything wrong with blending your ingredients instead, but there is a reason a juicer is great. Your body absorbs many of the vitamins and nutrients from juice that it wouldn’t from solid (or blended) material. Since your body doesn’t need to work as hard to digest the solids these valuable nutrients are more easily absorbed. On top of that, you are able to consume a significant amount more of the nutrients from the juice per meal/day because the yield of juice you get from a whole platter full of fruits and veggies is much more than you would eat whole. (i.e. 24 Oz drink could contain 5 apples, 4 carrots, 2 cucumbers and a piece of Ginger"

There was a thread on juicing a while ago I think it was called something like 'juicing vs blending' or something like that. From what I remember there was some good information in it, but it might have been a different one. Have a search and if I get some time I'll have a search later.

thanks for that Orla. I went out to Kinsealy Fruit and Veg shop beside the Garden Shop. I got a big box of stuff for just over 20 quid

I think there was another one went into loads of detail on juicing. I can't really remember it but I think there was something about carrots(?) being better for you in a certain why when juiced or some sort. I don't juice so I kind of stopped reading when it got into that much detail.

The better the produce the better the juice, some great juicing recipes books available now.

I juice on a regularly basis and believe its one of the most important things I do to maintain health.

Juicing is so good for you and you will really feel the benefits very quickly. In North County Dublin you are spoiled for choice in relation to Farmers markets. I'm from Skerries where the farmers market is on a Saturday, there are similar markets in Lusk, Donabate and Malahide and I'm sure Swords so you have plenty of choice.

I sometimes buy my fruit and veg from Supervalue as they source locally (as do Lidl I believe) and they frequently have special offers. They do stock organic veggies quite frequently too and it is a good idea to go organic when you can.

I second the recommendation of Jason Vale aka the Juice Master, he is totally inspirational. Try and read up on Jay Kordich as well.

A very simple juice is carrot & apple, I would do two apples to five or six carrots. You can add a little bit of either ginger or a slice of lemon. This is a very basic juice but has fantastic health benefits. :)

Prepare very large fruit purchases, I think you are better off just eating fruit as you get so little juice for the amount of juicing you have to do.

Vegetable juices are better then fruit juices and it would be very difficult to eat similar amounts as to what you can juice. Another factor is juice is easier absorbed by the body.
