    Hi,

Having heard contradictory views I was wondering does anybody have a definitive answer to this question:

"Is there any point in taking a whey protein shake other than immediately after a training session assuming you have a reasonably balanced diet (fish, egg, chicken etc.)?"

    Thank you

If your diet already consists of 1g - 1.5g of protein per pound of lean body mass, there's no need. Otherwise, it'd probably be a good idea to take another shake at some other point in the day - or a better idea to adjust your diet so that it DOES consist of 1g - 1.5g of protein per pound of lean body mass.

I would think my diet does as it is well balanced. Was it not to be, apart from after training, when would be the most suitable time to take it?

    Thanks

It's really up to yourself and depends on how your diet is currently spread out through the day. Personally, I like to take one before bed and mix it with milk as opposed to water as I've read that this helps promote a slower release of protein throughout the night.

Thinking is one thing, actually having that level of protein intake is another. Pick a period of 3 days and use fitday.com or similar to check.

I'd have tuna for lunch 4 days per week, 12 eggs over the week, chicken fillets 2 days per week, salmon/cod fillet for dinner 2/3 days and red meat 1/2 days per week.

If that's it, unless you're not very big, you're not getting enough. I would personally struggle to get mine w/out shakes. And I eat a lot of eggs, chicken, fish and milk.

Do your eggs come from the Duck's hoop or the Chicken's hoop? :D

    I'm not body building, 5'10, 70kg.

Well, a hundred grams of protein is a tin of tuna, 3 large eggs and two chicken breasts.
