Your ACL experiences

The OH got the bad news recently that he has 'no' ACL anymore and he has also torn his meniscus - bad arthritis is inevitable apparently. He has played soccer since he was 4 and lives for the game so this is naturally absolutely devastating news. He really ripped the knee up with a couple of terrible twisty falls where the knee almost dislocated several times so the injury itself is on the serious side.

It's been said that the recovery time can be long and agonizing. To those who have had the surgery - if you had the chance, would you do it all over again? It's such a difficult decision for him. He doesn't want to be on crutches for 9 months but a life without soccer is pretty bleak too. :(

Not sure if this is considered medical advice and therefore banned, if so, feel free to remove Mods but I had my ACL reconstructed a couple years ago. Not on crutches for long, i was only on one after a few days and then was back to walking normally after a couple weeks max. Full recovery could be up to 9 months before going back into full contact but can get back exercising, ie bike first of all, followed by cross trainer and jogging in not very long at all.
Id def recommend getting it and if I tore it again id get the surgery again for sure.

I may be wrong, but I don't think this is the type of advice that's banned here.

As far as I'm aware, the advice that's banned is the type of 'home remedy' advice that has the potential to add further stress to an injury - whilst your advice falls into a similar category to that of "go see a physio" that can be seen on other threads.

Had mine done a few years back, did lots of pre op build up work and lots of physio and all the recommended exercises after and was back playing after 5 months, Gabriel Heinze did his knee around the same time and managed to get back playing before him (obviously to a slightly lower level :D)

Knee ached the odd time for a few years after (especially on flights) but now wouldn't know it was done and other good knee is the one causing me hassle lately.
    Definitely recommend getting it done.
