Perhaps a political topic but I thing it deserves the AH once over :P

Read about this in the Sunday Times over the weekend and I agree it's not the biggest deal out there but it did get me annoyed at the same time. After listening to this man speak for an entire month in debate after debate on what he would do and 'bring to the presidency' this is what we get.

Not only did his daughter get to go but was able to bring a guest as well. More like what the presidency can do for him or more correctly his family by the looks of it.

To make a second point in all of this, the chamber can only hold 24 people, there were two political people in there already in the form of Leo Varadkar and Ruairi Quinn along with 'several' civil servants, the Austrian Ambassador, and Professor of Archaeology and three photographers. In terms of Joe public we get 6 tickets by lottery out of 35000 who applied, I think it shows where the balance of things lie in this country.

    It's not even a deal.

I don't find it a big deal. It's a landmark that is very close to Michael D's heart, as he was one of the guys that built it back in the day. Lay off him, will you?

Sends his daughter to Newgrange??? If that other cnut had won he'd build appartments on it.

I'm gonna look for a refund for Primary School, were were told the solstice is around December 21st and today is the 4th of January.

Or are people just looking that hard for something to get annoyed about?

That would annoy me too. People just up for the novelty and may have no real interest in it.

The same thing happened at the Ryder cup in Ireland. Alot of the tickets went to the great and the good. People ended up there who prob only recognized tiger woods and hadn't a clue what they were watching.

maybe he wanted her to see a landmark that reminded him of his time in Middle Earth.

We must stamp out this hypocricy. I wonder did the 'several' civil servants pay BIK on this benefit or is it another hidden perk protected by the CPA?

It's a free country, she can go where she likes. Some people will whine about anything.

    Nepotism - an Irish tradition.

I am a very ordinary bloke with no connections. I took my mother for her birthday as we're both golf fans. When I got them through the lottery, I almost cried. She did cry when Darren Clarke walked to the first tee within touching distance. I'd say the majority of the people there were in roughly the same boat.

Hope Micky H's daughter enjoyed it, great experience for her.

We can agree or disagree with this particular case but again it is another of how our politicians (regardless of party) carry on in this country.

I just think that there were 35000 interested in going, places are limited and ultimately two spaces are taken up by someone who is nothing more than Joe public and not elected.

I have to admit if I was his son I would have pestered the bollox off him till he had no choice,,"Yeah you can go just shut up"

I would love to be there for the solstice.

Maybe you should visit a country where nepotism actually exists.

Not really, more something we picked up from the English.

Yes you have no connections but MDH's daughter has. Would you have been happy if the then presidents children got your Ryder cup tickets.

The president is elected, and I'd wager that most of those that voted for him believe that he and by extension his family should be given some concessions in certain instances.

What's the fuss. According to Dublin Airport, there were zero hours of sun that day, nevermind what precession has done over the years.

    Hardly.

What aboht the cost of the lottery? How did the guests get there - in particular the ministers and the daughter? Any security or other 'officials' on hand?

Maybe she applied for the tickets before he was elected, do we know for sure he got her the tickets or what ever?

Or rather her daddy is president of the country she can go where ever she wants ?

I dont really see it as a big deal, we all know that given his position we'd use it to our advantage. I dont think anyone actually thought Michael D was anything other than a greedy politician looking for a higher wage and more perks.

Different argument, it was going to happen whether the presidents daughter attended or not.

yes because getting 12 out of 35000 tickets is better than 6 wtf

    1 chance in 35000....not likely.

No the article says he 'requested that his daughter, Alice Mary, and a guest be allowed entry....' The request was granted by the OPW

Yeah she was probably one of the 6 out of 35000 who got lucky. Just pure coincidence she's the daughter of the recently elected president.

Some people get all the luck.

C'mon, walk into any major places of employment in this country (or in many other countries) and you'll find plenty of nephews, nieces, cousins & buddys of higher ups. Its the way the world works.
