The Pre-season tournaments in football and hurling get underway tomorrow with 2 games in Connacht FBD League. Personally I always like these competitions, get to see some new faces, quite often some interesting results, and the first inter-county action since September. Nothing beats freezing yer balls off standing watching a game in January - You might even make it into next years edtion of 'A Season of Sunday's' ;)

These games can be useful for betting reasons also, as its possible to pick up on some possible upsets in advance with insights on team news etc. So if anyone has knowledge, please do share!

No problemo, I just changed the title slightly to make it clear that it is for this year (hope that is okay)

Kilkenny footballers have withdrawn from the O Bryrne Cup, no messing around in the lower competitions for them lads eh? :pac:

Louth get a bye then I guess.

Disappointed Kerry aren't involved this year, don't know much about Tralee IT either.

Galway 1-7 Sligo IT 0-7. Clearly weather affected, Sligo IT led 0-6 to 0-3 at half time. Apparently in the second half it was difficult to make out if it was a score or not. Shane Maughan got the Galway goal

Kilkenny county board should just disband their football team altogether if they're not prepared to put some effort into it. I know people might argue that a Kilkenny footballer has the same right to play for his county as anyone else, but their results in the league the past couple of years have been embarassing. I don't know why any fella would be bothered playing on a team that gets walloped by a cricket score in every game. 2-24 to 0-05 this week, 4-19 to 1-03 next week. What's the point?

I would have thought a senior hurling club team in Kilkenny would do better than the football team do if they were sent out instead of them, I suspect the "footballers" take it less than seriously.

We only beat them by 7 points in the O'Byrne shield last year :o

It's unfortunate as there is footballing talent in the county. Didn't their minor footballers beat Wexford last year? I'd love to see them put a plan in place like the Cavan hurlers are doing at the moment to try and improve the football team. But to be fair, it's their choice and they may feel it'll be too expensive and too much effort to try and make them any way competitive.

No doubt there is, but they all play hurling first and foremost.
I've no doubt if the Kilkenny hurlers had a few weeks training with the big ball and lined out in the football league they'd probably do ok.

But there's no reason it should be too expnsive. They'll never be winning All-Irelands but it wouldn't take that big of an effort to get them competitive, at least to the level where they could compete fairly well at Div 4 level and not get hammered every week.

ah here, we're bad, but not that bad. We beat them 7-17 to no score.

their senior team beat the Wexford Junior team in the Leinster championship alright, which would be decent going for them.

My bad. Now that I think of it, their minors have been extremely poor recently.

Wexford look a little long considering the likes of Ben Brosnan and PJ Banville are playing, although Meath have been training away since well before Xmas so they've probably got a fair bit done.

Fermanagh look a bit short as well. Canavan wasn't appointed all that long ago and even then took a while to get trials organised and a team picked. I can't imagine the Fermanagh players did a whole lot over the winter with the disorganisation within the county. On the other hand Baker Bradley is a decent manager and will probably have Antrim prepared reasonably well. I'd probably have had Antrim slight favourites.

They're as long as 6/4 with Boyles, going to have a nibble at that I think.

betting on pre season tournaments like this is akin to betting on friendlies - for mugs only. I dont bet often at the best of times, but no way would I bet on any games like this.

Wexford have named their team, a lot of young players with little experience. very much an experimental side.

Your line about Wexford is exactly why these pre-season games can *sometimes* be profitable. ie knowing that a team is playing a much weaker team for example and dont justify being so short. This obv doesnt apply to Wexford in this instance of course, but you catch my drift.

These are much less so pre-season friendlies for the college teams also. They are very close to their main competition for the year. So can often be value there. Another reason for my liking of IT Tralee against The Deise

maybe so. but you;d really want to know teams and lineouts in detail to make a good call, or see good value! dont think I'd trust it enough to be honest, but good luck to you!

He has a point about the college teams though. They will be taking these games seriously in advance of the Sigerson, and against sluggish and understrength county teams there can be some value to be had.

Meath won 1-13 to 1-10. Typical early January game with countless silly mistakes from both sides. We raced into a 7 points to no score lead after just 15 minutes but took the foot off the gas as usual and Wexford came back into it.
Tom Walsh got the Meath goal in the second half and we weren't in much danger of losing it after that. Micky Burke and Paddy Gilsenan also played well for us

Louth next week in PT. Hopefully we've another few competitive games to look forward to before the league.

Ben Brosnan did well (obviously). Both your midfielders were far better than our pair.
Sorry don't know who got the Wexford goal as it was a bit of a melee.

cheers. there was a good few young lads making debuts so just wondering if any of them will add to the team/squad. One of the midfielders was U21 last year but was only part of hurling squads. has transferred to Parnells so not sure what squad he will stick with.

Good game today between Carlow & Dublin, in front of a very big crowd.
Dubs even took over one of the terraces behind the goal, and had flags and were chanting away. It was their hill16 on tour for the day!

Dublin had 7 of their AI final team starting and brought another off the bench, Carlow were also missing about half the 1st team due to colleges, injuries etc.

Dubs prob shaded 1st half with MDMcAuley, having a great 1st 35, himself and Diarmuid Connolly and Paul Brogan caused the most damage. Carlow kept in touch mainly thanks as usual to Brendan Murphy who won most of the ball around midfield and set up chances, most of which the forwards missed...but he kicked over 2 great long range points of his own and it ended 6-4 to Dubs.

Dubs came out and scored 1st again , but then Carlow completly took over with half time sub Derek Hayden causing chaos in Dub fb line. It got back to 7-7, then it was point for point 9-9 with 15 mins left, with Murphy really flying at that point and kicked an incredible score as part of that. Ledger had a 45 to put Carlow ahead but it went just wide. Around that time Dubs brought on Mossy Quinn. He tapped over a free, and was then gifted another pt from a give away by a Carlow back. 2 terrible kick outs by O'Reilly the Carlow keeper gave the Dubs a 13-9 lead. Then they just pulled away and won handily enough.
Was a good Carlow display for 55 mins, and with about 7/8 main players to come back in I'd be hopeful of a good run at Div 4 promotion.

Before that we have a tasty local derby v Laois i see next week. Should bring another big crowd to Dr Cullen Park. As for the Dubs they look fit and were still flying around at the end.

    Kildare v DIT

    Kildare 2-11 DIT 0-9

Decent game for this time of year, DIT were not up to much. I don't think they scored from play in the whole match.

Kildare as a whole played in fits and starts. Some really good fast accurate football on a very heavy pitch mixed with some not so good.
To me the lads were just working their way back into it. Nothing to drastic, no real fireworks, just enough done to win and get another game next week.

Player wise, there were a few good performances. MOM for me was either Ronan Sweeney, Tomas O' Connor or Paudie O' Neill.
O'Connor continued off where he left last year and that's causing all types or problems for the DIT fullback. He won 90% of the ball sent into him and set up a lot of scores for others. He should also have scored a goal in the 2nd half with a great catch, then he turned his man and out paced him only to see the goalie save from an angle.

Sweeney, was good to, scored a goal and couple of points and kept the ball moving through midfield.
O' Neill was his usual full blooded always running to receive the ball and scored a good goal after O' Connor had scared the Keeper into fumbling the ball and his expected long range point.

Fullback line did well even though the Ref seemed very harsh on them and lenient on DIT, but it's better to get the rusty tackling out of the way now than in more important games.

Gary White did very well in the first half but had a quiet 2nd and Smith seems to need a little confidence.
Kavanagh scored to excellent points when he came on which was good to see.

I thought if McGeeney wanted to continue with the quarterback in the half backs Conway would be more suited than Eoghan O' Flaherty as his passing seems more accurate and Eoghan is more of a scoring threat.

Overall, as I said a good solid start, we are already in a better position than last year as Peter Kelly had at this time done his knee and was out for the year and Michael Conway was also out.

Offaly who had a good win today are up next. Football is back.

That's always great to see at the start of January. I was also pleasantly surprised with the crowd in Navan yesterday.
keane, the Meath midfielders were Mark Ward and Conor Gillespie. Don't have the team sheet handy so couldn't tell you Wexford's midfielders.

The media were saying that there could be 10,000 at the Dublin game which was way off the mark but still quite a good crowd yesterday.Maybe 3,000 or 4,000 tops.

The game itself was quite entertaining and Carlow really impressed me with how they defended and in particular in the midfield. They had their own spells where they seemed to win midfield and break forward. The passing for the time of year was good but I feel Dublin were guilty of wasting a lot of chances in the first half that would have put the game a little bit more out of sight.

Thought Michael McCarthy from Syls was good but faded away a bit. Some younger guys need to play more to get their endurance level higher at IC level.MDMA was superb in the first and Mossy showed that he has a lot to offer this team when introduced. Was a bit disappointed with Andrews. He is capable of better but in fairness he showed for a lot of ball and the Carlow defenders did seem to foul him on occasion.Don't think Savages kickouts were great. He is suspect under the high ball too.

All in all, a good game.

That's always great to see at the start of January. I was also pleasantly surprised with the crowd in Navan yesterday.
keane, the Meath midfielders were Mark Ward and Conor Gillespie. Don't have the team sheet handy so couldn't tell you Wexford's midfielders.

Wexford were supposed to line up as follows, T Hughes; N Murphy, F Lancaster, S Culleton; L Chin, G Molloy, A Doyle; D Waters, A Shore; E Bradley, B Brosnan, PJ Banville; P Byrne, K O'Grady, K Rowe. Apparently Doyle did not start and Malone came in instead. Was not at the game, just what I have picked up from other forums.

Around 3,500 is the estimate around here today.
Was a good competitive enough game for both sides. We were missing a few, and ye were missing a lot more but obviously have a much stronger panel.

Was impressed by McCarthy, didn't know of him but he did well. The Dubs mf with McAuley & McConnell were good at bombing forward but overall Brendan Murphy was the best midfielder on show...just a pity his partner young Foley had a poor game.
We def over rely on Murphy, he had to be forward/mf/ at the back breaking up attacks. Around the time that it was 9-9, he got a hit and he lay down on ground for about a minute. You could tell he was wrecked...had put in so much and with only a weeks training behind him, it was no surprise.

Mossy Quinn came on there with a point to prove, he def wants a starting spot this year. Did his cause no harm anyway, with a great 15/20 mins.
The keeper Savage didn't look the most convincing, and he shud have won that lob into square early in 2nd half that Derek Hayden bet him to, and his effort scraped the crossbar. Shud have been a goal really, and wud have been a soft one for Dublin to concede. Is Supple on the panel?

Decent workout for Dublin, and encouraging too for Carlow. With a few regulars to come back in for the league, i'd be hopeful of a good shot at promotion.

We really should be beating Louth fairly handily on Sunday, especially with a game under our belts.
Winner of this game plays the winner of Longford - DCU.

Louth are missing a whole raft of players as well.
