    Hi,

I like trying out different cafés' looking for a decent cup of coffee and a place you can just sit in and kill some time/read a book....

I used to like Latitude on Michael St however, it changed in the past couple of months to Adele's, I was never as fond of it after that...

    Any recommendations? :)

Gallwey's, over near Christchurch Cathedral is nice. It's a bit out of the way, so it's nice and quiet. I'm not a coffee drinker, but their chocolate is lovely.

    +100 here,

I like my coffee, if I could be bothered I think I would make a good coffee snob but Berfranks is far and away my fav coffee in town.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 453 ✭✭dashboard_hula

I used to haunt Latitudes when it was there, I haven't been into Adeles as regularly, but the one thing they have done is switch the coffee to Ponaire, which is the tastiest coffee I've ever had in my life. I've even started buying the bags for home use out in Ardkeen. Lovely stuff.

While I appreciate the effort and the courage of whoever is running the Lily O' Briens cafe for opening up during the recession, I'm sorry to say that their coffee is absolute pisswater. They use Illy coffee, which I normally wouldn't care enough about to object to, but this is just stink. It's a pity, because in every other way they're doing brilliant, but I can't stomach what they give out in a coffee cup.

I think Berfranks use Java Republic coffee, which on a home machine tastes over roasted and slightly burned, but I think the big machines can handle it better. Nice looking place too, maybe a bit too much going on at the front with all the bits and pieces they sell.

The kiosk in the centre of town is okay, but it's Bewleys, and I can only drink that once there's enough milk and sugar in there to doctor out the weakness of the coffee.

Geoffs actually have pretty decent coffee, and I've never felt like I was in a pub once I've a book in my hand, especially if you manage to nab a space under the heater out the back during a week evening.

    Me, fussy? Never...

There's some nice cafe's in town, but there's not a single one serving good coffee.

Berfranks and Harlequins would be my favorites to grab a cup of tea/sandwich. I used like the Book Centre, but I've not been in there in ages.

There's a new chain int he Book Center now, can't think of the name of it, anyone know it's possible to get to the cafe from the lift or is it up the stairs where the art book used to be?

Would agree on Gallwey's really good cappuchino aswell, and a nice touch they give you a couple of choclates in a little dish with your drink. Their hot chocolate is supposed to be great as they melt real chocolate in, not mix powered stuff like most places.

Other than there I would go for Berfranks.

The book centre place is called Cafe Libro. I asked about a lift and got the below reply. Not really suitable for kids and buggies I dont think because you couldn't leave the babies downstairs while you go up to order!

"There is a lift in the centre but unfortunately not up to the mezzanine level, but don't worry we will make sure that anybody with limited mobility will be looked after! There will still be tables and chairs downstairs too :) Come and visit soon."

They are always really good in Cafe Libro about helping mums with buggies and such. It is a pain indeed you can't take the elevator to that level but the baristas are well trained and well, its a good cup of coffee.

sounds a bit thick this but the following based on the places rather than the coffee,
    Coffee shop in the park
    Berfranks
    Harelquins
    Granville

Buddy of mine got a job with Costa, they are going in town (I believe next to Pennys... could be wrong about location but they are definitely going in town).

Not too sure about their coffee, but i hear their tea in unreal :)

Yep, one in town and one in the cinema I believe.

I actually prefer Adeles to the old Lattetude. Lattetude was becoming a bit ragged looking and I think the people who took it over have done a good job in brightening it up. The staff there are really friendly and I agree with dashboard_hula, the Ponaire coffee that they serve there is the best around by far! I think it won some awards in the Fine food awards (or something like that)
I used to like Harlequen but its not the same since, the guy who used to own it left.

Went to Mint the other day. Lovely coffee, gorgeous Italiano sandwich, sound, friendly staff and a lovely room.

What ruined the experience? They had a soccer match going on a laptop with commentary from the radio. All you could hear was a crowd of English lads chanting and a couple of commentators rabbiting.

It would have been absolutely perfect if there had been some low-key music going. I have a certain amount of sympathy for the lads there, but at the end of the day, they're in work.

Yip Costa Coffee opened today, free coffee from 11am to 8pm tonight so I heard

Was in work today and 2 colleagues went in and there seem to be a few teething problems..nothing major but they were waiting 20 mins for 2 coffees, one colleague asked for a Vanilla Latte and was given a coffee with loads of milk so it tasted like just warm milk and the other just wanted a coffee but ended up with the strongest ever as they had put 3 shots into the one cup...the machine he said seemed to be causing them a bit of hassle and there was milk all over the place..they tried twice to do their order..they were well flustered when they came back to the office..

like i said though, teething problems i'd say as the new staff get used to the new machines:)

The thing I hate most about the cafes in Waterford is how you start to get dirty looks if you stay longer than 20mins :( I was in Brunch the other day around half three and got the oddest look for staying half an hour - I'd finished my dinner (lasagne and chips SO GOOD) and sat back with a coffee reading/metabolising.

It seems to be very much in-out, quickly clear away the dirty mugs and vacate the seat, get the feck. I don't think the coffee culture of working/writing/surfing/reading for an hour or two in a cafe has ever gained popularity here.

And it's a pity, I know I'd spend a ton of dosh in a place that would let me sit in peace for an afternoon, where I could order refills without getting up from the laptop. Does anybody know a place in Waterford that welcomes such behaviour? I don't believe in buying one cup of joe and staying all day, but like I'd order a coffee or two every hour or so and the odd pastry. And tipping really well when I left.

Even if the library had a setup like that, but their 'study rooms' are a joke.

It drives me bonkers too how most of the above cafes close at 5:30pm, but that's a rant for another day :)

I think that's a pretty crazy generalisation. I spend a lot of time in cafes in Waterford and I never get that impression. On the other hand, it would never even cross my mind to go into Brunch...

Basically, find a nice big cafe, such as the Grannary or the Cafe Libro (Book centre), buy token hot drink, sit down, and nobody will bother you, ever, unless you start "occupying" the place. Really, if any cafe is quiet, I can't imagine the run been put on them. It looks good to have people in a quiet cafe.

You don't look kind of scruffy or dangerous, do you? ;)

If you're spending money, then what's the problem. By the way, just because someone asks you "if you're all right" doesn't mean they want to kick you out -- but if you don't like being asked, go to a bigger cafe. If you go to the Theatre Royal cafe and buy a coffee, you have to practically beat them off offering you top ups, in you drink about 3 cups of coffee at once. :)

I can't say I agree either. I spend a lot of time in cafes with my rowdy nephew and nieces and never felt we were outstaying our welcome. On the other hand, maybe I'm just an ignorant feck...

Had a very nice cup of coffee in costa beside Pennys yesterday , But..... The tables were all either occupied or dirty when we went in, I cleared the stuff off of one to sit down, the 2 staff were under no pressure but chatted behind the counter for the 20 minutes we were there and never cleared the table, ffs when will we learn?
The Costa at the cinema is spotless and the two girls in there are brilliant , just for balance

Iv found the Costa by Pennys very slow alright, was in there one day last week and it was busy enough but not hectic. Very slow at getting the orders done, didn't seem to do table service (seemed nervous of carrying them) and the tables were not cleaned. Three members of staff I saw on that day - one for the til, one for the drinks and the other wandering around mostly.

Oh I agree! Of course I don't mind being asked if I'm alright, it's the tutting and sighing if a server comes over to clear the table. I leave promptly whenever that happens. But I do leave a tip, even if s/he's surly.

I guess my main gripe is that there doesn't seem to be a cafe that actively welcomes work-from-home types, occupy a table for an hour or two, automatic refills without having to get up and leave the table/your stuff... That sort of thing.

Perhaps I'm too Americanised for my own good! :D (AmericaniZed?)

I agree 100% with Grand Blaa here. I see it a good bit on my travels and when I am on work related business. I would do a good bit of business in places like this meetings etc. There is always a few people there with the laptop or tablet going about their business and I admit it the waiter(ess) is always polite.

One or two coffees getting out of the office and still doing your work can be of great benefit work wise I find.

What I don't agree with is a person sitting there for 2/3 hours with a one coffee. Then I can understand the gripe but if the person is getting a few refills I don't see an issue.

I go to Brunch quiet a bit sometimes in the morning and other times in the afternoon, I only ever have the one coffee and have sat there for up to 2 hours at a time without a second glance from anyone.... I agree there are some places that just want you in a out, one that come to mind is Kylemore you're only just finished and the plate is gone. Love going to Berfranks too can sits there for hours watching the world go by.

I agree, very clean and much more nicer than the one up town, but slow.... I understand there is stringent procedures when it comes to making coffee (The Costa way) but it's by no means quick. Just getting a black coffee is slow, but besides that the sandwiches and the cakes/biscuits are really nice, really recommend the red berry coolers actually.... They are unreal
