Winter is so depressing

This has to be the worst time of the year. The Christmas and New Years celebrations are over, I know it's meant to be the 6th, but they're over. People who were off are now going back to work. Everyone is fairly broke I imagine too, I know I am. I've been afraid to look at my online bank account balance. The days are still disgustingly short. A lot of people will be going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark too.
The weather is just horrible, especially right now. At least snow is a bit different, but all we have now is wind, rain and coldness. The thoughts of when I started work at 7 outside in the cold, yuck.
I really wish I could just hibernate for Winter.

I've been working solid this last month, work will be very quite for all of January, so i have too weeks of "no pressure" work followed by a 2 week holiday. I love this time of year, but your right about the weather.

If its any consolation to you it's only going to get closer to Spring/ Summer

Why did our ancestors bother traveling here? I'd have been happier back home near the equator. I've just been on youtube for the last 15mins watching videos of summer time:(

Poor Ted, I concur, the weather is horrible in Jan/Feb/Mar.
    I don't mind the cold, I don't even mind rain, it's the **** wind combining with either/both of the other/s I can't stand.

Edit: On a personal level, it's exasperated lately as I am awake nights with my ****ed up sleep and have barely seen daylight (the ****ty attempt we get most of the time at this time of year) in weeks. Probably not good for me.

I never got the January blues before, but damn I am not liking it this year!
Probably because I worked a lot of Christmas/was sick so dont feel like I got a break, sleep patterns screwed and general personal circumstances are a bit crappy and will be up until the start of April. The weather is definately not helping.

Itll be summer in no time folks-but now Im gonna stop wishing my life away and see what I can do to make the most out of winter!
Oh right, feck all...back to moaning for me so :D

I love winter :D summer is sh1t, its horrible, sticky humidity, or just warmer rain, gets bright at stupid o' clock, I'd love year round autumn/winter. from october to feb is my favourite time of year.

I love winter :-D I agree this time of year can be depressing- especially seeing brown trees in peoples windows that they can't be bothered to take down!! I think the coming weeks though you see the start of spring and inevitably summer.

Spring? Spring is suspiciously similiar to winter only the daylight lasts longer!

Summer? We got no summer last year and alot of years since 2005 we didnt get summers either............anyone remember the "summer" it rained for 60 days in a row?

Is there a summer version of this? I really hate the summer, I should move to that place in Alaska where there's no daylight for a month, I'd fcuking love it :pac: I feel way more productive in the night time than daytime, hate glaring sunlight, dull rainy days ftw!

don't even go there. This comes up a couple of times a year in AH and we always have people telling us how great last summer was and that they spent the whole 3 months in shorts and barbecuing and at the beach etc. I wasn't there last summer but the last few I've had in Eire were just brutal, maybe with 5-7 days of real summer weather for the whole season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

this winter has been really mild though, its been 10C an upwards for most of it, compared to last year it was more like a few weeks of spring.

    Broke - meh.

Fat is why January sucks. Pass the celery :p

This has been a really mild winter so far. I'm hoping it stays like this and doesn't deteriorate. The sub-zero conditions last year were intially a novelty, then an out and out pain in the arse. Being immobilised or having limited freedom due to those conditions doesn't make me happy at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭Yahew

I personally prefer cold bright mornings to 10C warm miserable muck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭saa

Well I'm not letting it get to me, to be honest I've been more miserable in the sunshine with all the free time and enough money, I still hated the weather, I hated what I was doing and worried about money.

So I'm taking the everything will be grand approach, enjoy what I do have.. heat, coats, bus ticket, somewhere to go... all that good stuff and more.

It's still really shorts days and everything, and you can't go around in just a tshirt. I live quite high up too and it can be really cold with a wind.
Jumping in the car in the mornings shivering. Argh.
Just thinking about the Summer now, it feels so far away. I love everything about the summer, except, coming home from a night out and it starts getting bright, yuck! Also the Sun shines into my bedroom in the evenings so it can be really really warm. My room is even warm during the Winter, I don't know what it is about this house. The insulation seems almost too good upstairs anyway. Never need to turn the heating on even last year. Shouldn't complain about that though:P

Hmmm maybe...but I'm not sure those light boxes would help much. I'm sure they'd be nice to wake up to but it's not going to change the weather:(

    Broke - meh.

I'm neither broke nor fat... but it still sucks.

Nothing to do with weather either, it's lack of light and the next bit of partying or a bank holiday that anyone has to look forward to is Patrick's day.
The whole back to work/school and general mundanity don't help either.

Aw I love it. It's a new year, a new start, the days get longer from here on in. The panic of Christmas is over (though I do adore the panic of Christmas :D), all the plans that can be made for the year ahead, the fact that you've got a full holiday sheet again!

    Ah sure tis great :D

You would think we are living at the ends of the Earth.
Seriously it was very mild for Christmas and is still alright now, no snow or ice on the roads.

Go and live in Canada and you will think this is Spain when you get back.
By the way Spain gets cold weather too and it's dead around the tourist areas, hibernation.

We have a mild climate here, and some dark evenings are because we have daylight savings time. Contact your local TD to abolish daylight savings time.

I always liked the winter, I don't mind the cold to much and I like extreme weather.

But if they are to wet then I agree with the OP

Please. We are further north than any of the major Canadian cities.
Evenings are dark because of that... daylight savings time is in summer not winter and no amount of faffing about with hour hands on a clock is going to lengthen the mid winter day length. We are mild because we have a maritime climate influenced a by a tropical ocean current and not a continental one.

Have to agree with Teddy... The dark evenings are the worst part of it for me .. especially since I've no reason to get up early.. mostly working nights these days, so I dont see enough hours of daylight.. :(:(

Thankfully, I can use cheap alcohol to take the edge off the dark days..
