Honestly. Sadly comes with age - all joking aside.

Its because it was all probably of a 'wonder' when you were a kid.

Old enough sadly to see the shine of Christmas slip away? :)

20 is when you start to get old. Don't panic!

Yeah there was something missing this year but I think it's because last year the snow put us all at an "It's Christmas" standstill. The snow made a huge difference. This year wasn't as much like Christmas because the world kept moving and we weren't stuck inside, didn't have to get all wrapped up to go outside, didn't get days off work/college etc.

Its all downhill for ya now, every year it will feel less and less like Christmas.

Totally felt Christmassy round my house, we had the tree and decorations up by the 10th December and I totally got into the spirit of things, drank loads also:cool:

Though I got 20 years + on the OP, I'd be saying similar. Even when I've had meh or even crappy christmases they felt like christmas. Like the OP(and others have told me similar) I can't put my finger on it, but this year didn't for some reason.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

If felt kinda squishy this year. The previous year it was more of a spongey feeling. The year before that it had a crunchy feeling.

I hope next years Xmas is crumbly - I love the crumbly feeling ones.

Christmas was quite good despite the fact that money is tight. But then the car gave out and everyone has the dreaded lurgy, still the kids reckon it`s not the same without snow. :)

Not the same once you've left Hogwarts really, no big feast or knitted jumpers with your name on it.

I'm 26 and this is the first Christmas ever I had no feeling for. Last year at least we had the snow which added to the festive spirit(a rare treat)

Had a good Christmas, with just a low level family feud in the background as opposed to previous years ..one in particular had a Stalingrad type offensive raging all Christmas.

Peace and Goodwill to you all.

I'm 20 and Christmas stopped feeling the same when I turned 17.
I have to put the effort in to enjoy festive cheer, but this was the first year I would have been happy to volunteer, Christmas is really for kids I wouldn't be too bothered about it.

Even with the snow last year people were sayin it didn't feel like christmas. I got extra drunk this year in order for it to feel more like christmas. Amazing how christmassy it feels with a few rums or scotches on ya.

Christmas is sooo boring for me. Its over and done with now anyway, tree taking down and already packed away in the attic. Back to work tomorrow and cant wait!:D

Maybe it was to to with the cold, or lack therof? It's been about 14 degrees for the last two weeks, in Dublin anyway, and it's kinda weird being able to walk around outdoors in your t-shirt at Christmas.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 8,490 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fluorescence

I agree. I think it's partially because I'm so anti-Christmas when the decorations go up in shops around August/September; by the time the day finally comes round I really don't care. I do think there was something particularly different this year however (and a few people have said the same to me). Maybe it was the lack of snow after all :pac:

I still had a nice time though, so no worries :)

As we have all become accustomed to instant gratification with the availability of high speed internet, our ability to feel excited at the same thing which would have excited us 10 years ago has lessened. Also, the things that really made christmas good, say, 20 years ago, such as chocolate, electronic goods and other gifts, drink, etc.. are much affordable than they were and so are less of a novelty..

..i've been hearing this "it didn't feel like christmas" for the last 4/5 years specifically, yet I never heard it before then... I think it's because the standard of living all year round has become "too-high" to make christmas seem special, like it did 20 years ago..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

Is that because you didn't get an iPhone for Christmas??

Yeah, didnt get into th Christmas spirit near as much this year-dont know why. The past two Christmasses before were amazing, I think the snow helped an awful lot.
That and when Christmas day is on a weekend, you dont really feel the benefit the same at all. Its just a regular Sunday dinner with the family, and then New Years was just your average Saturday night out. Bleh.

Yea, this one didn't feel very christmassy.
I was sick the week leading up to christmas so that didn't help, sleeping stupid hours and was around some people who are scrooges, none of it helped.

Maybe the fact that it is actually warm on Christmas Eve knocked some people out of kilter too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

    there were a few factors.

1.it was on a weekend so no extra time off for a lot of people

    2. The weather was extremely mild so there was no bundling up,no snow and nothing to make boring small talk about.

    3. Everything was open on Stephenziz day so it was over before it started, plus a lot of poor people couldn't even enjoy Christmas day because they had work the next day.

Xmas doesn't seem the same anymore

    Maybe I'm just too old.

Xmas for me involved the following when I was a kid.

Watching great movies all over the xmas period, there used to be film after film after film on, this is not the case anymore. I had to actually download some xmas movies just to get in the mood. It's been like this for about 10 yrs now.

And Why aren't there any kids playing with their new toys out on the street anymore ?? I can only assume they all have xbox's or ps3's and got new games so they stay in all over xmas.

When I was a kid on xmas day the whole estate came out showing off new toys etc...

I think these days kids are destined to be fat & unfit compared to us since we are the best generation IMO, we work harder than our parents despite what they say since it takes 2 to buy a house now + the youngest generation will be blinded by TV by age 16, obese by age 17 and throw tantrums if they don't get their own way.

I say bring back xmas by removing xboxes & ps3's at xmas time and complain to RTE regarding the movies situation.

    /rant

    What a shame

There is a medium, I've 3 kids who like gaming and the assumption they are fat is so wide of the mark all 3 are skinny fecs, nothing wrong with Xbox or ps3's or wii or ds's when used properly

My main problem with Christmas this year was that Hocus Pocus was on. I looked *everywhere* for that film at Halloween and nothing-and then they play it at Christmas?! Eugh.

No, just xmas movies in general. Movies like :

    Home Alone
    Home Alone 2

    Scrooge or Christmas Muppets Carol
Bad Santa, Narnia, all those type of movies that are usually or used to be on only around xmas time.

To the poster who has 3 kids and they play console games.
Were they out on the street / park playing with any actual toys ??

Just wondering is all. Like i said it's a disgrace there all locked up indoors glaring at the tele all day.

Xmas was great when I was young, checking out what other ppl got etc...

So, when you were a kid, sitting on your hole watching film after film after film was ok, but kids today playing xbox is just lazy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 329 ✭✭samina

I think it's because kids have so much now, when I was younger getting a bike or such thing was a novelty now most kids have a bike, Flickr etc and struggle to think of what they want for Christmas, and your right it's usually phones, consoles, iPads and the likes.

Tv this year was at an all time low but you can't blame tv stations for that because even if you go to rent a DVD they are rubbish, they don't make movies like they used to :(

All of those films were on on different stations before or over Christmas.
Not to mention RTÉ showing both the Back to the Future and Indiana Jones trilogies.
ET was on two different channels too.

To be honest, I think you're seeing Christmases past through rose-tinted spectacles.
You remember watching films back to back, but you were also spending lots of time playing with toys, so you probably didn't spend that much time watching films.

I didn't play much outside at Christmas as most of my toys weren't suited to being played with outside, and it was fecking cold.
Playing outside was for the summer.

Anyway, Christmas hasn't changed at all. It's just that you're getting older and it feels different.
Though Roses aren't as nice, and they have a much narrower range of flavours. They should replace two of their four or five caramel sweets with marzipan and montelimar!
