Equator, sure it'd be mad crack. I'll do a bit of googling and let you know where.

I'm pretty sure you can add a poll, try 'thread tools'.

The Equator is oppressively hot and has all sorts of mad bugs and snakes that want to kill you though.

And that could be seen as part of the attraction.

    The Equator
    Arctic for me please.

Alaska to be precise. Lovely big salmon in crystal clear rivers, bears, skiing and snow-mobiles.

Log cabin with your missus on a bearskin rug in front an open fire.

    Aww yeah.

For people interesting in that kind of thing I guess.

I wouldn't mind either way tbh. Both look fantastic in comparison to the wild and wacky ways of seaweed fishing off the west coast*

*I even held my hat in case it fell off after typing that sentence.

We Irish are not built for hot weather, trust me.

Yeah great dream when it's winter here and all Irish women dream of lying on a beach all year getting skin cancer.

In real life, mosquitoes are a pain literally and you can get malaria from the F**kers.
    Bugs are big and nasty.
When you are cold you can get warm, but when you are hot it just sucks.

I worked abroad there and the photos look nice but I remember the ****e as well. Cockroaches as big as an iPhone, no thanks.

exposed and static i'd rather die comparitavely relaxed and slightly salty rather than pulled into a ball arthritic before my years muscles n tendons havin retracted with cold. See how we attempt to shield ourselves from cold wind? Read the body language. consider the wince factor.. christ it's not even sub zero

but the benefits are just about everything else in comparison constantly feeling lethargic n hunted by oversized wildlife ain't good, for starters..

You can still get nice summer days inside the Arctic circle.

    The Equator
Definitely the Arctic. Hottest weather I ever had to put up with was 45 degrees and it nearly killed me, and was eaten alive by bugs and mosquitos. I hated it.

We are doin alright we only get what feels like extreme cold for 3-4 month max total combined then we have pretty much my ideal temp or thereabouts at 15c or that

Good air for the lungs anyhow ideal when run/walking

Is it even possible to live in the artic? Don't see too many doin it..

On the other hand, the equator is overcrowded. Seems to encourage life; take what you will.

I lived in Equatorial Africa for a year, twas grand. Hard to get drunk off beer though as it is instantly sweated out - spirits are the job in that situation. But beers are still nice to enjoy, and in fact there's nothing better than sipping a beer in the heat.

Also, as sweaty and malaria-y as it gets, people are in a jollier mood when it's warm, including yourself (unless you're a ginge.)

Also... the equator is actually not that fcuking hot. You acclimatize in under a month, and after that, you would fucking love it (if you were a white person that is, not a poverty stricken African.)

Black flies! Take them away and Alaska/Canada is home sweet home.

Most of the Equator has a tropical rainforest climate - i.e. warm and very wet. Temperatures average c.30 degrees every day with much much more rain than we get in Ireland.

I'd go for the Arctic, somewhere in Norway would be nice.

    The Equator
If we're talking sometimes unbearable heat at the Equator, then I choose Arctic Circle.

Its easier to warm yourself than to cool down.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,515 ✭✭✭LH Pathe

Most are thinking of your own personal microclimates within an inhospitable climate anyhow where them fires n blankets r all the cosier. Such is warmth

Abandon our insulation and air conditioning n we'll see how we fare

No but i can take a bit of sun and don't go from Irish blue to white to red.. blister a bit and then back to white and then Irish blue again like some of my fellow Irish do :D

Some nice high mountains on the equator for example in latin america. None of that swampy clammy weather

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,341 ✭✭✭El Horseboxo

Quito has a climate like Ireland's summer in terms of their heat. Mitad del mundo which is lower than Quito where the actual equator passes through is slightly warmer but very pleasant. Spring like.

I voted for the equator and I'm happy with that.

Artic Circle...I can live in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Russia, Canada or USA...

Whereas the equator has a list of uncivilized countries

Tough one but probably artic. Its easier to warm up than to cool down.

The arctic is mostly desert and uninhabitable. You have a shot a living on the equator.

but will you have the energy to find the pick that will break through a foot of ice in order to eventually catch the fish that will only then give you the energy.. To warm up - once you've thaw'd out first granted you've not died of frostbite - where the alternative is a life affirming sip from a mirage?!

Ok if its living in a city or some sort of civilisation, then the artic. If its back to basics, then the equator all the way.

the full monty alright.. in the barren, most extreme wildernes surely folk would rather perish in heat no matter how much you'd be craving the alternative in given scenario

Chuck means living i bet. life. non-perishables man I am like, soooo negative...

Not actually on a Bear Grylls type trip.

I don't mind the cold because you can wrap up against it and when you come home you can shake the snow off your boots and warm your toes by the fire.

    Loverly.

The Arctic as pretty a place as it may be is also one of the harshest place to live on the planet.

Summer might be grand with enough warmth and plenty of fish in the seas though the 24hr sunshine might make one slightly insomniac. But when the big freeze hits in winter and temperatures start to plummet below -30c and for miles there's nothing but snow and ice with very little sign of life and no sign of the sun for weeks, you might start to re-consider your decision.

Life in the Arctic is exceptionally tough. Was watching the Frozen Planet documentary the other day (amazing on blu ray!!) and it showed how the tribal inuit people who lived in Siberia and Canada survived. Basically it didn't look very comfortable. You have absolutely zero vegetation around you so you're solely dependent on animal meat. You need to either spend hours chasing reindeer or hunt a walrus in treacherous conditions and then all you have to eat for the coming months is raw walrus or reindeer meat or some of the eggs you stole from the sea birds over the summer.

Compared to that yup the Equator is full of insects and bugs which can be very very nasty but once you learn to deal with them, you will get used to the heat pretty soon (can always go take a dip in a river/lake/sea to cool yourself off) and food is in plenty. Lots of tropical fruits and vegetables that grow. Bananas, Pineapples, Mangoes etc in plenty of supply. The weather and the daylight hours remain constant all throughout the year and there's just one season which is hot, humid and wet... Just make sure you shower plenty! Also plenty of amazing wildlife to check out.

Maybe the only thing is that unfortunately most of the places in the Arctic are fairly well developed 1st world places, Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia etc. while most of the places in the equator lie in the 3rd world and are quite poverty stricken...

Give me the equator any day! I have raynauds syndrome that would pretty much mean my extremeties falling off in extreme cold so a bikini, some air con and equator living would be much more up my street thank you!
