Hi all. Just wondering if anyone can help. My boyfriend snores, we've been together 18months now and whenever I stay over I get very little sleep. We have tried: nasal strips, nasal spray, anti snoring pillow, various types of ear plugs, rubbing vicks on his chest, valerian root tablets, burning eucleyptus in an oil burner, anti snoring ring...so now Im almost broke and Im at my wits end. Im aware Im the one its bothering so I enquired into hypnotherapy but was told its natural to be woken by noise if ur a light sleeper and so I could not be hypnotised against a natural reaction!.. While some of the products definitly reduced it none of them stop it. I get really hot and develop a stress rash when he starts, I get so angry(Im always narky when tired)! , I just cant control it!!While he actually is not the worst I have heard it still bothers me, he sleeps fine and its definitly not sleep apnea or anything... can anyone help me!! pleeese!!

We are exactly the same and have tried everything and the only thing that has worked for me is taping my mouth closed.

Use a permeable tape such as this

    http://www.hhproducts.ie/finepore-permeable-tape-25cm-p-1031.html?osCsid=sm5imp2ogpiddp426i5bj23o63

and take a look at this

If you don't want to watch the whole video you can skip to 3:30.

Let me know how you get on.

Some things that worked for me

    1. NOT having a shower last thing at night. - seems to trigger snoring.
    2. Regular cardio exercise - used to run 3 or 4 times a week (before knees blew). This definitely slowly reduced it and eventually stopped it most nights.
    3. Only product that works for me is a spray called Silence - 2 big squirts very last thing before going to bed. Wears off though around 4 or 5 in the morning.
    4. Sleeping on my side also helps reduce the noise - on my back I will rattle the rafters.

Finally - when it gets very bad and nothing stops I go and sleep in another room - otherwise my OH wakes me constantly and we are both grouchy and tired from lack of sleep. At one point during a cold I did this for 3 weeks - best 3 weeks sleep I have had in ages - really woke feeling fully refreshed each morning.

Thanks everyone Ill try those and let ye know how I go. he's definitly better on his side but he wont stay on it as he complains he gets a headache if he stays on one side without moving. (Ive contemplated sewing a tennis ball into his shirt but I know this wont go down well) Ive also been on at him to get more fit as Ive heard that it reduces snoring , he does a bit but not as much as Id like him to!! The problem with ear plugs is that they only muffle the sound, I can still hear him!! Im relieved to know Im not alone tho so thanks a mil for the replies!

    Hi,
I feel your pain, my husband snores too, although less now than before, he rube vicks into his chest and this seems to help. It obviously opens the airways, doesnt smell too hot but works.
    Good luck :)

Thanks a mil, this sounds good but Id be afraid he wouldnt be able to breath as he gets blocked sinus sometimes, can you breath through this tape stuff??

Not sure if this will help but it helped me. I use to be a mouth breather and snored really bad and slowly but surely I began breathing through my nose and the snoring has been reduced a lot. It took a lot of time to get use to nose breather weird constantly concentrating on it. But supposedly its healthier nd it cut down my snoring

My girlfriend is terrible for snoring. She doesn't do it every night but when she does it becomes impossible for me to get to sleep.

I used these ear plugs and my problems were solved.

Your boyfriend could well be louder than she is though. She also tried hugging a pillow when going asleep (allowing her to comfortably lie on her side) and that worked. As long as I got to sleep before she rolled onto her back again. ;)

I haven't tried it myself, I'm the "snorer" so it doesn't bother me, but I've heard...

    Hypnotism is the solution.

Apparently, you can have yourself hypnotised so that the sound of your partners snoring is, itself, a trigger to send you off to sleep. So if you've no issue with hypnotism, it's apparently a great solution.

Thanks, I contacted one hypnotherepest who said its natural to be woken by noise so he doubted he could hypnotise me coz its a natural reaction, would you or anyone out there, know of a good hypnotherapest? I live near Limerick and there are lots listed but hard to know whos good

no sorry, but i think the way it works is that the snoring is a trigger for you to relax, as opposed to what normally happens (getting aggravated as it impacts your sleep, which causes you to become more aggravated, which further prevents you from sleeping...)

I have found that it disturbs the quality of sleep that you get. I was kept awake by a non-sleeping baby, while listening to my husband snore and when he woke up in the morning, I was very fustrated by listening to him say how tired he was.

I eventually managed to convince him to try a spray that claimed to reduce snoring, it worked a treat, but he hated using it, even he said he got better sleep while using it. But because it made him gag slightly he stopped using it.

Bye-the-way I am at the opposite end of a bungalow right now and I can hear him snore from here.

You can get snore guards which are like gumshields. There are plenty of them on eBay under different brands. It helps to pull the lower jaw forward slightly opening the airways that bit more.

My mate uses one and his missus swears by it!

Thanks, I asked a doc about those coz Id be worried in case they d affect a persons breathing, the doc was sceptcal about them, I see booths have a new one out now, has anyone used it or can recommend it? It looks kinda rubbery, not sure how good it could be and it costs 40 euro.

Snoring is caused by the back of the tongue vibrating when you breathe in and out.

Best thing to do before you go to sleep is stick your tongue out as far as possible then stick a tooth pick through it to prevent it falling back in again.

I snore and she still loves me. apparently now she cannot sleep unless she hears snoring.

    1. I snore when I sleep on my back.
    2. when I am unfit

the chemists have some class of ring for your little finger to stop snoring. not sure if it works.

I know this is an old post, and I have a friend in Cork who is a clinical hypnotherapist, and she has told me recently that hypnotherapy can be used successfully to stop snoring. Your boyfriend is the one who would need the hypnotherapy. (I am surprised that the hypnotherapist you talked to didn't tell you this) My friend is actually trialling hypnotherapy for snoring on one of her clients very soon, who like you, is at their wits end. If you are interested to know the results, just let me know by replying to this post, and I'll post the results here once my friend has completed the treatment on her client.
