    It's that time again!

For the second time, us members of Boards.ie will have our say and will decide who the best wrestlers' in Ireland are. Last years list was as follows:

    30: Carl “Shooter” O’Rourke
    29: JDP
    28: Danny Deans
    27: Irish Dragon
    26: Wayne Daly
    25: Lycan
    24: Insano
    23: JC Williams
    22: Tucker
    21: The Ballymun Bruiser
    20: Danny Butler
    19: Red Vinny
    18: Bonesaw
    17: Kev Rocks
    16: Working Class John
    15: LA Warren
    14: Andy Phoenix
    13: Sean South
    12: Vic Viper
    11: Mandrake
    10: Jordan Devlin
    9: Bingo Balance
    8: Philly The Kid
    7: Mad Man Mason
    6: Justin Shape
    5: Omen
    4: Duncan Disorderly
    3: Paul Tracey
    2: Paddy Marrow
    1: Sean Maxer Brennan

So who will take the top spot? It's been an interesting year for Irish wrestling, so the list looks to go under a radical change! Can Maxer hold onto his top spot? Will the Zero 1 trips for Devlin and Tracey cause them to take take the title? Or will a new comer debut on the list and raise everyones eyebrows?

    How it works is simple:

1)Before January 14th (Two weeks from today), PM me your list (In order) of Irelands ten best wrestlers. Leave a comment with each name as to why they have gotten your vote. It's important to keep them ranked as the higher you place them the more points they get. (EG: Your number 1 vote gets 10 points, 2 gets 9 etc.)

2)After this date I'll total the results and post the top 25, with either 2 or 3 entrants per day. The list will also go onto www.thebostoncrab.net in a seperate section (Under the Irish wrestling dates). I will also use my column at 411 Wrestling to promote the list and help give the Irish scene abit of notice on one of the largest wrestling websites on the net.

    3) Of course, there are certain wrestlers who cannot make this list. Since it's to rank the top active wrestlers in Ireland, those who are making their main home in America or Japan cannot be included, which means Sheamus, Fit Finlay and Fergal Devitt are excused from nomination.

    4) Don't post your choices in this thread, let's keep the element of suprise active and keep all nominations secret smile.gif

5)NEW FROM LAST YEAR-PLEASE READ!!!: Last year, since it was the first time we did this, we agreed to allow guys who haven't done alot in Ireland in the 12 month period to get a mention, due to their importance and impact on the Irish scene. This year however I would please ask you to only consideer January 2011-December 2011 when you are casting your votes. If you are unsure if someone was actually active during the year then please as in this thread. Last year we had alot of guys involved with the scene keeping their eyes on the thread and I'm sure they would be more than happy to let you know if someone you are considering voting for has actually been active this year.

    Now let's get voting!

Jesus people weren't wasting time with voting already! Thanks to everyone who voted so far, but unlike last year were we had one guy jump straight to the top after a few votes, this year the top three are all on equal votes and the next two are tied and behind by one point!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭montyrebel

I may have posted this on facebook to get a few votes for a certain company, hopefully it helps lol.

Looking forward to reading the results and thanks for doing this

    wee bump for this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,491 ✭✭✭thebostoncrab

Votes are balancing out nicely. We have top 5 but with each vote someone else in that group takes the top spot. So I strongly suggest getting a vote in if you have been to shows this year, because every single vote is important this year!

Bump, not long left to get your votes in!

    Voting closes tonight at midnight!!!!

If we don't get any more votes I have some quick stats for you:

15 names from last year have not made the Top 25

The biggest drop from last year is someone from the top 10 last year not charting.

The biggest rise from last year is someone who jumped up 13 spots

This is the first year that a woman has joined the top 25

There are FOUR points between number 1 and number 2, and 2 points between 4 and 5.

The results will start to go up on Monday (I'm away looking at wedding venues tomorrow), so if you haven't voted yet then get your vote in now!

Votes are closed! Got one last vote in last night and, I can't believe how much it actually change the top ten.

Thank you all for playing and the results begin tomorrow (While I type them in work instead of actually working :p)

K, here are the list of those who have made this years Top 25 (Which this year is a 25 instead of 30)

    B-Cool
    The Ballymun Bruiser
    D-Max
    Damien Corvin
    Danny Butler
    Danny "The Pain" Deans
    Dunken Disorderly
    Insano
    JDP
    John Jennings
    Johnny Notaro
    Jordan Devlin
    Justin Shape
    Katey Harvey
    Omen
    Paddy Morrow
    "The Stuff" Paul Scarfe
    Paul Tracey
    Philly the Kid
    Robbie Morrissey
    Sammy D
    Shawn “Maxer” Brennan
    Thunder Titan
    Tron
    Tucker

So as you can see from last years list, we do have alot of guy joining the list and leaving the list from last year. I'd put this down to a mix of the closure of DCW since alot of the guys gone wrestled there mostly and guys wrestling in England more so than Ireland.

I'm not going to be doing the write ups this year, instead I'm just going to track down any photos, clips, fan pages etc that I can get my hands on and stick them in with the best quotes we got from voters. Simply put I don't have the time for that part. But the countdown shall still carry the same level of excitment. So let's get this thing going!

I'll have numbers 25-21 in about an hour.

I was sure Tucker would have made the too ten, I had him really high on my own list and the first few voters agreed. I thinks it's one of the big surprises from the list, as is Omen not making the top 10. Thought he would have made it again.

Another suprise I saw was noone from IWW making this years list, even Mandrake. What makes it more shocking is he didn't get any votes from anyone who voted. Really stunned by that

Enjoying the list so far. Would enjoy a more detailed run through of who each wrestler is and what he/she has been up to for the year, but understand that detailed reports of the Irish scene can be hard to come by you can only work with the information you have.

No one from IWW being placed is a curious development, but seems inevitable given their shunning of the internet in recent years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 146 ✭✭Rawm2008

I wouldn't put it down to them shunning the internet, more of they they run so many shows but never in the same place, like PWU who run the 2 same venues through the year, Mainstage runs i think 2 or 3 venues, and NLW's home seems to be the Moat theater, Id also say as well them still being exclusive to themselves and not wanting to work with other promotions hurts them as well, they are in their own bubble where as all the others let their talent work else where and get more exposure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭montyrebel

PWU had at least 3 venues last year, the balmoral hotel, malone rugby club and the lisburn racquets club, not sure how often they go to lisburn though.
also i think there may be some new venues this year

I personally think the list is a good idea but there should be a lot more names on there, guys that have been doing this for a while now and guys that deserve their names to be on it.
I didn't make a voting list myself as i'v only noticed the topic today.
Here are a couple of names that more than deserve to be on this list and for some strange reason were not.

Vic Viper, Bingo Ballance, Brother Skelly, Lee Lightening, Mandrake, Andy Phoenix and Anthony Idol

Some may not agree but that's just my opinion

    Number 10

    Sammy D

    2010 Placed: N/A

    What some voters said:
“Another great wrestler who broke onto the Irish wrestling scene in 2011 in a big way. He started off the year at just 15 years of age. He finished it with victories over many of last year’s list and he even had an NLW title shot.”
“You forget how young he is because he can go toe-to-toe with the veterans and hang in there no problem and that's what makes him must-see”
“FFPW's breakout wrestler of the year 2011 - and with good reason. Sammy D is young but has really developed over the last 12 months with great matches versus OMEN and Tron this year. He has established himself on the NLW roster this year.”
“Great debut year, even wrestled NLW champ Dunkan Disorderly”

    Number 9

    Robbie Morrisey

    2010 Placed: N/A

    What some voters said:
“Robbie didn't have as many matches as some of the lads on the list but when he wrestles it’s always a 4 stars plus fight. His bouts against Paddy Morrow and the tag match with Devitt are particular highlights.”
“Tough wrestler and has the look of a born convincing heel.”
“Easily the most improved in ring performer on the Irish scene this year. After a very quite 2010, many in NLW & FFPW consider him the next export to Japan in the New Year. His matches against Paddy Morrow have been some of the best bell to bell matches on Irish soil and he had a 5-star match at Poetry Slam 2 vs. Jordan Devlin and Paul Tracey.”
“Superb heel, great in ring and a distinctive look.”
“Match of the year in the Bray tag match.”

    DANNY BUTLER

    2010 Placed: 20

    What some voters said:
“Butler had a great year finishing up the year as one half of the Irish Tag Champs, even successfully defending them single handed. His outing at Poetry Slam against his Tag Partner in a deal or no deal match also shows he is well able for outstanding singles matches too.”
“Won the tag title and had to wrestle a number of tag matches by himself as well.”
“He puts the MEGA is Team Mega, literally after defending the Irish Tag Team titles on his own ever since they captured the belts. Justin Shape is the luckiest wrestler in Ireland to have a partner like him.”
“Great matches by himself and as Team Mega, especially their homecoming match at the NLW Anniversary show. His hardcore matches with Justin Shape at the Poetry slam shows were two of the most entertaining of the year.”
“Tag champ, very entertaining matches with Justin Shape, as his partner and against him at poetry slam.”

“Great look and a good worker. Really improved on his promos and finished the year strong as the NLW champ.”
“He's an absolute powerhouse and despite his size he can move so fast. The belt looks good on him.”
“Just the best all-round guy I’ve seen this year. Great in-ring, promo and physique, seen him as both heel and face and is a natural at both.”
“He had a good year and is the current NLW champion.”
“A guy with a great look and great in ring ability, has been around since day one how he hasn’t gotten snapped up by a major fed is beyond me.”

“He is a great wrestler and everywhere he wrestles he gets the best reaction also his match with Justin shape was brilliant.”
“Had great matches all year for FFPW, NLW, AWR, Poetry slam and MSW among others. Was involved in the Ladder match in Naas for NLW's 5th anniversary show and had spot of the night with his Thriller Driller off the ladder. Consistently entertaining.”

“Last years number 1 has a great look and a master at the art of wrestling. He did us all proud in Japan and only misses out on the top spot of my list because he missed out on Irish dates that he could've made. I won't be surprised to see him win this year and he would well deserve it.”
“I think it's obvious to anyone who sees him in the ring. He's so exciting in there and knows how to wow a crowd. He got rewarded this year with a trip to Japan and that's why he's Ireland's top guy”

“He had a great year, with good matches here in Ireland and also a successful tour with zero 1 pro wrestling.”
“Looks like RVD, performs better than RVD.”
“Great in the ring, great look, worth the price of admission, would rank him higher but has only done a handful of dates in Ireland this year.”
“Great year for him and had a well deserved spell in Japan”

And we will leave it at that cliffhanger for tonight!

So it's obvious that we have a new number 1! With three guys left, in what was an very, very, VERY close race, which of these three men will be Irelands Best Wrestler 2011?

    Jordan Devlin?
    Justin Shape?
    Paddy Marrow?

Which I still find a shock. Yes IWW doesn't market itself online except for show results, but they still get crowds at shows and alot of guys who voted lasted year that did this year had IWW names last year. Mandrake in particular is a name that I was positive would chart high this year.

At the same time, this year there seemed to be a growing interest in FFPW and NLW, which had to have played a huge factor in people's votes.

Presumably they all come from your readership then. It's understandable that if that if they weren't exposed to IWW this year they'd not vote for them.
