It makes for better reading if posts follow a structure like the one below.
    - Score
    - Course
    - Handicap
    - Course par/sss
    - Competition/practice?

Just a quick note is this for golfers who would regularly score under 100 or 90 or for people like me who while getting better is still around 102-108.

All standards welcome, its a handy way to track your progress through the year. Its also useful to see you're not the only one frustrated with the game!!

Grand cheers. In addition to tracking here I've also downloaded a golf app for the iphone and it is a useful tool for this also.

Played nine holes in very windy conditions today in Bandon, 18 points off 20, which I was delighted with.

Parred the first and doubled the ninth, doubled the sixth as well (index 2), but played well overall, probably had to think a bit more about my shots given the strength of the wind. No three-putts either so hopefully I can carry this on.

Its definitely something to consider even if you only take elements of it to work on. You were saying you spend a lot of time hammering in those 3-footers so you're already doing something like it. That's where a lot of the scoring is. Get some solid coaching to go with it and that handicap will come flying down.

My brother-in-law took up golf last year so he could play with me and has spent a huge amount of time on coaching and practicing, using some of the steps in that practice routine. He already hits the ball further than me ( thanks to coaching and his own athletic build ) and his putting is as good ( thanks to that routine and the putting green he built in his kitchen ). He's been taking money off me all winter and picked up prizes in SEVEN competitions during the Autumn and Christmas Period, which is pretty impressive for someone who's only picking up the game. I expect his handicap will be tumbling down aswell as soon as the counting competitions get started again.

Shot 111 at Citywest on wednesday which is a bit of a downer as I was slowly getting back towards <100 in Ireland. Still using a 24 HCap and trying to get down to that. Ended up with 18Pts. First time in a long time I got under 20. On to the next round next week.

Try not to be too hard on yourself. Golfing in these conditions is tough so scores will be all over the shop.

I wouldn't get too downhearted W, I played Citywest twice in two days last summer and just couldn't get to grips with the front nine. Had 18 point (6 out and 12 in) and 20 (4 out and 16 in), not one I'll be rushing back to play!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,329 ✭✭✭wcarey1975

I'm not too downhearted just a little pi$$ed as I was making progress. Played on my lonesome and lost 4 balls in standing water in 3 different places so that just summed up the day. Was good to get out and hopefully learned some new stuff. I always have difficulty with the PW from around <30 yards out so took the opportunity to have a go at that everytime I was in a position. I had about 7/8 attempts and the first 3 were just dire but the next 4/5 were all pretty good. If that shot as to become an option then its a day well spent. Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm going back out again for a round on Tuesday asuming it's not downpour weather.

I had a poor start to 2012 on Thursday, 15 holes but in truth the wind made it tough and I've only been out 3 or so times since October. Ball was blowing off the tee on some parts of the course. Ended up with 21pts I think. Out again today to quickly put that right so will update later. Looks a better day so no excuses today! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭simonp1

Funny game this is +8 out and +1 in this morning on Mahony's Point for 39pts. Loving the R11 Driver :)

Bit better but lots of room for improvement - 13 holes today.

    - 56 strokes (Par 51)
    - 10 Hcp
    - 1 Birdie
    - 6 Pars
    - 6 Bogeys
    - F.I.R. (1/10)
    - G.I.R. (6/13)
    - Putts 23 (5 one putts, 2 three putts (in the last 3 holes grrr).

41 points in New Forest today and it could have been so much more, i had FIVE fcekin 3 putts in that round and missed a 2 foot putt for birdie on the 18th.
90 strokes in total i think - have to check the card.
Have never hit as many fairways or GIR in a round before.

nice app that golf shot, first time seeing it.

I see we are members of the same course, Ragusta!!!!

21 points over 9 holes today in Enniscorthy. HC is officially 22 but I have improved a bit since my old membership expired so I decided to play off 18 to see how I scored. Joining new club this month so I am going to see about handing in 3 cards to get a new HC.

I am amazed how much better I played today simply by shortening my backswing, feels like I have wasted the last 2 years not making such a simple change!

There's a fee for the full app with GPS. There's also a free app that you can use as a scorecard which give the very same statistics.

    App Store
    Android

Edit : Charlie is correct but you you can go to www.golfshot.com and use the course checker to see if courses you play are there.

First round back of the year, after a month or so lay off. Scored 34 points, playing off 15.

Flying on the front 9, 21 points, 4 pars, 5 bogies. Could easily have been 25 points on the front, lipped out 3 par putts on the bogey holes and birdie putt on one of the par 3s.

Fell to pieces on the back, 3 doubles, 6 bogeys, for 13 points.

Was a frustrating day in the end, but the driver was working well, and on another day a lot of the missed putts would have dropped so I won't complain too much.

Felt mostly positive about my play so hopefully its the start of a good year of golfing

First round of the year. 35 points off 18 in Roundwood. 14 out, 21 back in.

1 birdie (on index 1 typically) 5 pars, 7 bogies, 2 doubles and 3 scratches.

Had trouble judging distances with the wind, so could have been a bit better.

Played the European Club today off 3 handicap. Birdied 16 and parred 18. And am not going into detail about the rest :p. Was a nice day but wind was up early and really struggled, especially the front 9 where I just got blown away :( Likely to be my worst haul points-wise this year but cant honestly guarantee it'll be the worst golf I'll play. I really wasnt that bad but got beaten up today, no question! Tough track...

Cost me 60e Tones, not cheap but, for a treat and echoing Whyner, it's just about worth it! They used to have the East of Ireland Alliance competition on Sundays (a singles comp exclusively for 12 handicap and below) but I was told that's reverting back to Wednesdays again. So was just a run of the mill Open Singles today. They have a few of them during the week, certainly more than they've ever had before that I can remember. 60e still a lot of money though, you'd want to have a good weather forecast before committing!

Added quirk just introduced recently whereby if you hole-in-one on the par 3 6th, you walk away with 1000e. Not sure if that'll be enough to attract large numbers though, I'd be interested to know how they're performing financially at present.

Played 12 practice holes today. Drove the ball like a dream.

Really dissapointed with my iron play today should have put a really good score together instead of level 2's finishing double double double didnt help either :(

Wow - you tend to hit a lot of fairways there. Stating the obvious but 2/12 greens from such a fairway stat stands out like a sore thumb, considering you had no 3 putts either. If you can sort out your irons you'll be laughing.

yeah I know. my irons were extremely bad yesterday :(

I was hooking them which is very unlike me. (2 iron shots hooked out of bounds from the middle of the fairway):eek:

This is very clearly the weak area of my game right now. I have spend a lot of time on my putting recently and its resulted in me irradicating 3 putts almost exclusively from my game but Im just not hittiing enough greens with my irons.

My aim is to try and get down to 15 this year and I think its achievable with some dedicated work on my iron play.

Only got to play six holes today as had to collect my brother from school.

Ten points, a par, three bogeys, a double and a scratch, the scratch annoying as I couldn't find my ball after a second shot despite it being in play

Did ok today in 12 hole compitition again off 10

    two scratches
    4 pars
    4 bogeys
    two double bogeys

a bit better than last week :) 21pts off the whites

    think 23 took the compitition

As mentioned in another thread, I received my first ever handicap (of 18) this morning and played my first ever competition about 10 minutes later.

12 holes stableford comp using temporary greens.

    Scratched 5

    Scored 14 points

Not too disheartened though, at least I am off and running.
