Wasting Your Time

From reading various forums my head spins about what to do and what not to do in the gym, about what to eat, about people lifting incorrectly, exercising wrong. Then I know there are things I am doing wrong myself and then there's advice I get from trainers which I suspect is wrong. I don't have a lot of faith in the average gym staff member when it comes to fitness programmes etc.

Is it worth seeking out a really good trainer and doing a session with them say, once a fortnight or something?

I'm in a position at the moment where I have specific goals, am committed and can get to the gym 4 times a week and I want to use the time properly. As I'm already in reasonable shape I feel I should be able to accomplish a lot if I can do 16 or so sessions in the next four weeks.

I do wonder if sometimes I'm wasting my time doing certain exercises and other times I'm just pulling muslces and the like.

    Any pointers or thoughts?

What's your goal? Fat loss, muscle gain, sport specific? We'll have a better idea of where to point you.

The first thing you need is injury avoidance, if as you say you're pulling muscles regularly. If you can get your technique up to scratch your options will broaden too.

Well I'm trying to build my core which has always been neglected and have started doing a good bit of core specific exercises over the past few months, not consistently but it has got me started. I also want to shift a small bit of flab I have on my abs which is just pointles, doesn't need to be there as I'm pretty thin.

I do bike racing and find my body is worn out before my legs are, so, I just want to generally be a bit stronger.

Roughly, my gym routine consists of 30 minutes of running, about 20 to 30 minutes of core exercises like crunches, plank, side plank various things that make up a little routine. Then I work my way through various weight machines doing reps of 3 and barbell curls.

I think my "pulled muscle" is some very particular injury and I'm not stretching properly to alleviate it.

Makes me wonder if I'd really benefit from the focus of a good trainer and a proper routine.
