For a farm machine I would recommend a JCB and not much else. They are expensive, but you get what you pay for. They are well built, tough, and reliable. The healthy export market has pushed prices up and many in your year group will have had a hard life at this stage.

Manitou are good too, but uncommon in your year group and price bracket.

Sanderson I think arent too bad, but again aint too common

CAT is an option but finding a suitable size one may be difficult and they do give problems with the chain controlled booms,

Personally I would recommend AGAINST a Merlo, Matbro, and John Deere (especially the older ones which are Matbros with JD engines)

And as with any potential purchase, every make of machine will have its failings and weak points, every person has their personal preference, and its condition and how well it was minded and maintained that are the most important factors.

Thanks another guy has a 1997/98 Sanderson TL7 in very good condition and fully serviced.
as you say not common but seems like a good tight machine.
he needs £6500 sterling for it,

94 - 99 JCBs have Perkins engines, which are great, and very reliable. The later ones had a newer Perkins and JCB's own 444 engine, which weren't so reliable. John Deeres do have decent engines in them, but for many the best thing they can say about an older JD teleporter is "they have a great engine". You need more than a good engine to have a good all round machine.

However I would agree with you about the service, as JD service is generally very good, and JCB service, (if coming from ECI like most JCB owners on the East of the country) is pretty poor, but still an old machine like the OP is talking about wont be getting main dealer work done, just parts now and then.

The Sanderson TL7 has I think the perkins engine too (7600 hrs on this) but these are rare compared to the jcb but probably just as good.. like i said £6500 for it but i'm not so sure

    whats you's think?

i would recommed merlo have owned and run them for over 20 years never any problems bar routine maintenance, have owned 7 merlos and never problems re selling either, serious machine with side shift aswell, good perkins or deutz engines too ! i have owned 2 jcb's aswell and hired in a few when was really busy and they dont hold a candle to the merlo

Probably out of my budget to be honest .. They seem to be expensive and not that many about.

they hold their value really well i have never seen a merlo for less than 6500 sterling no matter how old or hours on the clock , hydrostatic transmission is as reliable as rain its what they are putting in alot of new tractors these days and is very good, very simple robust machine.
