He's doing a Liam Ó Maonlaí and will probably be performing barefoot next.

What he used to look like:

(Yes, it was just an excuse to put up a pic of Lisa Hannigan...)

He did what is known in the business as "letting himself go"...

It's a show of defiance to the X Factor generation.

"You may cover my songs, but you won't copy my image!"

    Fair enough; actual quote?

It's Fleetfoxitis (or The Hipster Cancer), you can catch it at certain music venues, coffee houses and some record stores. There's a cure but you have to go through Leonardcohenosis before you're back to normal.

will he also start wearing non-prescription glasses before he is cured?

He's preparing for his role in the upcoming remake of Castaway...this version tells the story of an over-earnest, pretentious twit who gets marooned up his own h*le for several years

Yep, met him a few times on the 67a back in the day and around Maynooth, nice guy, quiet and kept to himself is how he always came across to me.

I read recently somewhere that he felt that the pressure of the music industry itself caused him to act like an arsehole on occasion. He seemed pretty repentant about it.

He is not a nice individual, very much up his own arse.

I think it was more the X factor and who were covering it rather than Damien Rice's popularity or lack of in England.

I heard he's releasing his new album on vinyl only so as to keep one step ahead (or behind, depending on how you look at it) of people uploading/downloading on the tinternet.

Really? Seems pretty stupid. Theres one thing trying to be Indie and all but that is more or less forcing you to pirate if a torrent site is the only place you can get a digital copy. I would have no problem admitting thats what I would do instead of manually recording each track on a computer just so you could have it on your iPod. Suppose he doesnt need the money.

This sounds like bull to be honest. It's very easy to copy from vinyl to mp3 etc these days. It'd be online within hours of being released. The guy isn't stupid, he'd know that wouldn't work, so I'd say that's total fiction.

    What ever happened to

Could very well be bull. But then we don't know whether the guy is stupid or not, so you never know.

Well, let's see, he held out for a deal whereby control of distribution was covered by a large established record company while he kept ownership of his songs - and now he's made a mint from his song being covered by someone else. Hardly the actions of a dunce. But yeah, maybe he doesn't realise that music can be copied from vinyl, you could be right.

I realise that post ^^ of mine makes little sense ..dunno whats happening with Rice More importantly wtf happened the thrills?

And that aint no joke. Ten years of turbulence, followed by another 40 years of turbulence. Ouch. Poor Dammo.

Who was the guy on the lls recently, O' Rourke was it? (last week or the week before)

anyway, 'tween him, the villagers and yer man above, we're doing ok.

one could almost forgive Bellx-1's outrageous rip-off of Talking Heads

doesnt matter he's still performing isnt he ,i dont know if he's writing new songs and neither do you :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 226 ✭✭sillo

No that's true, but he's released 2 albums in 10 years, and one of them got some pretty unfavourable reviews (many criticisms focused around the lyrics in particular iirc!), so I'd be careful about tagging him as some wonderful songwriter. He simply isn't.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

yeah but critics are going to be critics, i dont think he wrote the album with those type in mind tbh!!

Met him a few times and he seemed sound. Signed his album for me and drew a picture on the inside cover. Just for the record I'd be up my own ass if I tapped Hannigan

A lot of dance music is still released vinyl only - the vinyl is prized for its sound and selling a limited edition physical product is a way of actually making some money for your endeavours. The people releasing the vinyl aren't stupid, they know it's going to be copied over the internet once it gets ripped but at least if they sell their 200-300 copies of their vinyl ep they have some way of recouping their costs.

I'm not sure why you're quoting me here, I'm well aware of all of this.

Another poster suggested Damien Rice was considering releasing his next album on vinyl to "keep one step ahead" of people who might share it online. I was saying Rice is no fool and would never think this approach would work in the first place (the highlighted part of your post seems to endorse what I'm saying).

I never said vinyl collectors wouldn't buy his album on vinyl if he released it in that format.

Even if they made a tenner per EP sold, thats still only 2 or 3K! Am I missing something here?

Nope, missing nothing. You're really going to be only releasing the vinyl to recoup your money for making the record, get licensing deals and get a name for djing. And there's no way they'd be getting a tenner per ep.

Not trying to offend you there. Just quoted you because you said:

    No other reason...

    No offence taken.
Just quoted you because you said... No other reason...

I still don't see how that follows (in fact I'm pretty sure it doesn't), but I think the point I was trying to make remains clear enough so quote away...

Declan O'Rourke? He's been around for years, has 2 albums. He's very good alright but has the same kinda "wait 5 years between albums" thing going on as Damien Rice...sadly. :(
