Just seen sky roll this song out in their latest football add. At the last few Ireland games the song has been pumping pre match.

Who is the original with this song on the terrace? Is it Celtic

I'm not so sure about first on the terraces,

but me and my mates used to sing it all the time down the local, and I'm talking about 10 years ago here . . .

That's nothing, me and my mates used to sing it 30 years ago when out on the piss. Here's a picture of us on the lash back then - that hair, what was I thinking?

That's because the YBIG are the most unimaginative goons around, they just rob songs Celtic sing, "We Love You" and now this!

In fairness they have done a lot to bring back some atmosphere to Landsdowne road though i agree they are not very original with their choice of songs

Liverpool - all football related songs originate in Anfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭MANUTD99

I bring it up because I remember last year watching Celtic V Rangers at Parkhead. Celtic won and the atmosphere that day looked to be one of the best I'd seen for years.

This song was pumping that day. It has been played a lot recently at different teams so wasn't sure which fan base had started it. It has really caught on big time in the terraces

Out of curiosity, who started singing YNWA first. I imagine Liverpool mind. Celtic much better singing it though

The best football songs are existing songs, which take on a special meaning at a Club, and become indelibly associated with a club.

You'll Never Walk Alone is the obvious example. It is amazing how a number of big clubs dont have a song to which there is an indelible link, and is played over the PA as the team enters the field. Manchester United is the biggest example of an English club which lacks an easily identifiable song.

As far as i know Celtic started singing it after the Hillsborough memorial match between Liverpool and Celtic! I may be wrong but that is my understanding!

Liverpool were the first to sing it!

I can't believe youse don't know the answer

It was started by me at Celtic Park 16 months ago after I attended a school reunion disco. I just started to sing it to myself and before I knew it, the whole stadium joined in!

Ok so I take it in general, I just can't get enough started at Celtic on the terraces.

So did YNWA really start at Celtic also? If not how did they come about singing the song? They piss all over Liverpool at singing it

Also a mate of mine remarked on how Celtic were copying a Polish team by turning their back and jumping up and down(since copied by Man City). They seem to have their own take on it though, they chant "lets all do the huddle"

Been doing it since at least 2007, to be fair. It actually irked me last night when a Sky reporter commented that they were doing the Poznan.

Yea JCGE was started at Celtic, the Green Brigade started it AFAIK

Liverpool sang YNWA long before Celtic, Celtic apparently adopted it after the Memorial game in '89. Liverpool were singing it since the '60's

The Poznan City call it. Poznan's fans did it against City in Europe, and City copied it from them

Celtic AFAIK copied it from Poznan too, but its called the huddle, as in the huddle Celtic players always do before a game

So really, its all down to Tony Mowbray :pac:

Must be great craic at a Celtic game, sure all the United boys were giving it loads on twitter last night about it.

Fair play, piss poor league and they are in the top 10 highest average attendance in Europe. Avg of 48k per week

    Pretty sure that's not true

Though to be fair, if I was a fan of the club responsible for that United Road, take me home.. abomination, I'd be claiming ownership of literally any other song:pac:

:)Aha I was waiting for that one. I was at a fair few Ireland games this year including Carling Nations but the amount of knobs who came out of the woodwork for Armenia & Estonia was very annoying.

I must also mention I know a lot of lads who were frequent visitors during the pre Aviva time and refuse to go now due to mistreatment

Figure is slightly false as theres a load of European clubs with ~50K/55K stadia whose average would be higher if the stadium was bigger. For example Amsterdam Arena is 51K, if it was 70K it would sell out the 70K for 3 or 4 games a year and the lesser games would have the same attendance as they have now. So the average is skewed downwards by the size of the ground. Ditto clubs like Man City, Liverpool, Kaiserlautern, Frankfurt, Valencia etc.

How can the figure be slightly false if it based on the reality? It is like saying 'The figure is slightly false as if Celtic were playing in the EPL, they would get an average of 60k and if they had a bigger stadium, more like 70k' The figure in Scotland is skewed downwards by the crappiness of the league!

Football songs are pinched all over the place between many leagues, albeit with changed words. The genius of most chants comes from the words coined on the spot relating to a specific situation, not whether the tune is new.

Almost all the teams you mentioned average attendance is less that their current capacity. I would imagine Celtic would sell out against Rangers and in Champions league if they played there again in a bigger stadium also so I don't understand your point

Are you joking me?! Have you heard the United Calypso? It is sang at every game and played on the PA before matches at OT.

Man City only sell out when United play there, dont think their ground size skews any averages in fairness

The GB lads at Celtic have been singing JCGE for a good while now, it seems to have caught on alright :)

Regarding 'the poznan' AFAIK first it was seen in England was here on 21st October 2010

Man City fans singing 'what the fkn hell is that', just as well they never decided to do it themselves eh.
This is one of the earlier versions of THE HUDDLE from Celtic Park

    From 23rd September 2008

The first paragraph was rubbish I agree, but the second is true.

Ireland don't really have many songs of note, all I can think of is The Fields of Athenry, Come on you Boys in Green and Ole Ole. At least they are making the effort to get another few songs out there. Even if they are shamelessly stolen.
