I'm getting so frustrated with the mike perez situation. Here we have a guy who should be charging up through the ranks taking on any one of a whole bunch guys like helenius, chisora, price, fury, grant, fraudley etc etc and instead he's doing nothing. I'm starting to fear he's going to become anouter fat out of shape could have been. his management team have alot to answer for.

It's a real pity because I think he had a good chance of catching on over here after PrizeFighter. I remember seeing loads of people talking about it on Facebook or that, who weren't big time Boxing fans. Everybody seemed to be really taking to him.

Perez and Garcia are both fighting on the 30th, Perez is boxing Friday Ahunanya who is over the hill but still one of his better opponents to date.

Good test for Perez to fight in the US too.

Friday Ahunanya has fought Povetkin, Ibragimov, Cameron, Arreola amongst others.

The problem with Perez is he will just be avoided by top prospects such as Tyson Fury and the like. And they will have good reason to avoid him, its a no win situation for the likes of Fury or Price etc.. to face Perez, high risk low reward scenario. He cannot fight for the British title hence he just simply will not get exposure he needs on the domestic scene.

He also has motivation issues, but in fairness to him if he got better fights this would improve. He got himself in great shape for prizefighter when he had something meaningful to work towards.

Ireland is not a good base for him, if he wanted to be successful he needs to be in the US or Germany. Not being able to fight for the European title is holding him back aswell, seeing as all the top heavies are euro based.

Overall, there are too many valid reasons for the better fighters to avoid Perez. He will never be a "voluntary" for someone. Hes far too dangerous.

I heard talk of it alright, but never any confirmation that he would actually do it.

Any chance of his fight being televised tonight?

Won 100-90. Definitely won't get a chance in Europe now.

    why do you say that?

He won every round last night, was quite comfy against a better quality opponent. His weight was a bit better last night, still like to see him shed another maybe 10llbs though, but definate improvement on his last outing.

wasnt having a go at perez at all. he cant challenge for ebu and the more he proves himself the less chance of getting a voluntary against someone worthwhile.

Friday Ahunanya went 12 rounds with David Tua last year.

Is this guy's career ever going to take off?

  • Site Banned Posts: 76 ✭✭RXMPS

If he lost about 20lbs and gets fit it might.

I wouldn't bet on it though, he seems lazy like nearly all the heavyweights at present.

I saw a few pics of him 2 months ago and he looked awful, probably 245lb+, way too heavy for a guy of his build and height.

He needed to keep busy and keep active, figthing every few months like a young Tyson, I'd say he's gonna end up another fat bastard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

Way too harsh. Perez has been plenty fit enough in all his fights thus far, this comes down to management and will rather than fitness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

The ony times he has been out of shape is when he has been fighting complete bums, for prizefighter especially he was in terrific shape. Maybe his management are right in biding his time until the Klitschkos retire as any fights against fringe level opponents now are big risks with little rewards financially.

    I'm keeping the faith anyway.

Can challenge for EBU if Irish citizen and would qualify on a few grounds
    • Apparently married an Irish girl
    • here longer than 3 years so could qualify on residency

Would be good to see him challenge for irish title fight versus Rogan or Fury

Then go on to challenge for EBU or Grudge match Irish versus British heavyweight fight??

He is after all Irish Mike Perez "the rebel"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Perez is Cuban, and we shouldn't try to take that from him by calling him Irish. He has great potential, but I think it's wasted in Ireland. Irish heavyweight boxing scene is just too poor - he really needs to head to the states if he wants a career.

If he can fight for the EBU title through his resisdency then its def a step in the right direction. If this doesnt come off soon then I agree with the post above and relocate to the states otherwise start calling the top british guys out....can''t see any of them taking the risk though.

He really needs to be active as he obviously has problems managing his weight when out of action. Its a pity cos I reckon he'd be a live contender if properly motivated and well managed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Spazdarn

There's nothing for him here in fairness, he's not going to go for European titles, don't think he's being held back by management or anything like that... if he was in the states fighting bums at least he'd be active and on his way to getting recognised.

He's done nothing with the post prizefighter hype....

i didnt refer to him as being irish (yet) my original question still remains unanswered, like i said i had heard he was applying for irish citizenship and was wondering if anybody had any progress on that..... surely if he got his citizenship we could call him irish then??

As Irish as 'Red' from the Shawshank

Allthough he is alot more "Irish" then some sportspersons who have played for Ireland , in that he has lived here for a number of years years, he has an Irish wife, and children born in Ireland etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭Wild_Dogger

sports the tri-colour apparel in the ring too, he's here to stay :)

Was delighted to see him win the Prizefighter .... head and shoulders above the rest i thought

Mike Perez is not Irish. Currently, the politicians and the media are trying to destroy what it means to be Irish. They seem to want rid of the White race.
The international legal definition of the crime of genocide is found in Articles II and III of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide.

Article II describes two elements of the crime of genocide:

    1) the mental element, meaning the "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such", and

    2) the physical element which includes five acts described in sections a, b, c, d and e. A crime must include both elements to be called "genocide."

    http://www.preventgenocide.org/genocide/officialtext-printerfriendly.htm

They are trying to destroy our identity, which is genocide. Alan Shatter is doing his best to speed up the process.

Just like I can't become Nigerian or Chinese, Mike Perez can't become Irish.

If Mike Perez is Irish then I'm Cuban. This link to Ireland that so many claim is way over the top. The man is Cuban. End of! And that won't change in my view even if he wins a world belt. He'll always be a Cuban, and a Cuban world champion.

Bizarre? You imply two claims, what is the second one?

i found it bizarre that anyone would choose to go back to the original posts argument instead of the more recent outrageous post (moderators?) suggesting immigrants are assisting genocide. mind u i dont for a second think u would side with joemusashi!

of course hes not irish but hes giving some sort of allegiance to his adopted country, no harm if it gets a few people interested.

Ok, I am with you now. Yes, a wee bit OTT that post, and I did reply to a post of his on the Mackiln thread.

There doesn't seem to be any news on fights coming up for Mike Perez.

Here is an insightful article from the examiner dated May 26th, about his struggles to get here and to get fights. It appears to be written around April 2012

the original post was based on the rumour that he was applying for citizenship. if he was successful in his application would you still hold that opinion?

If this if true it's a tasty, tasty little match up! Bit disappointed it'd be on in Vegas tho, probably would consider going if it was UK. Adds to the occasion I suppose.

I'll be really let down if it doesn't come off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

Incredibly dangerous fight for Price with minimal reward apart from kudos from boxing anoraks. This is Perez's big opportunity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 257 ✭✭Ghost.

Has Perez v Price been confirmed? It would be a very interesting fight. I cant find anything official on it anywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭sxt

There is no mike perez fight unfortunately according to prices twitter. Will he fight the over rated Seth Mitchell?

    David Price @DavidPrice_1 24h
July 27th in Atlantic City is a possibility for my next fight but nothing is confirmed. Anything else you hear about opponents etc is untrue
