Just wondering on what people's opinion would be on this situation?
I have bought a bottle of vodka, coke and cigarettes a in my local shop over a few weeks,
on a few occasions i've not been charged for the vodka(which is cheap €10 volkova),
The people who have served me vary from time to time,
My friends have different opinions on the situation,
Some of then say I am stingy and should pay and be honest etc, and some say fairplay,
And some say its the shops loss and so do I.
Whats the opinion of ye boardsies?

    Coke, in a shop...

    ...do they stock hookers too?

I'm fairly honest, but even I probably wouldn't point out being undercharged.

if it kept happening, then maybe after a few times I might feel guilty and say something.

Depends - If it's a local shop and you are friendly with them in there probably say it.
If it's a big store and they're often as rude as hell to you say nothing.

Spar and Londis are usually family-run establishments. They just use a symbol.

A Spar could also be a family run shop though, I'm more talking about Tesco or somewhere. If the person on the checkout doesn't even bother to say hello to you after you say it to them, make a note of it, and don't say a thing. Hopefully it will come out of the ignorant ****s wages. Probably won't though - but you can hope.

Kinda whats been said.Tesco or the like.happy days.If it was with regards to cash though ,like being over/under changed i would point it out anywhere. As working in retail and knowing the ramifications of your till being out would feel to bad to keep quiet

You wouldn't steal a bottle of vodka. oh never mind.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,739 ✭✭✭✭starbelgrade

If people are stupid enough to continuously not charge customers for goods, then they shouldn't be in retail.

It's not that hard.. customer brings items to till, person scans them, person pays for them. There's only 3 actions involved there, none of which take much skill or any great level of intelligence.

I don't think I'd say anything the first time it happened, it is the shop's responsibility to make sure they charge for everything.

But if it kept happening I would say something - I wouldn't feel right about constantly not paying.

It's weird that they all keep making the same mistake especially given that you only have 3 items

In fairness, any near me are staffed by, what look to be overworked, underpaid, bored looking guests in our country.
If the 'family owners' are able to afford to pay people work for them instead of working behind the counter themselves then I wouldn't feel too bad about being undercharged the rare time it happens.

Either they are going to present you with a huge bill for all the vodka they haven't charged you for, or you're just a swell guy and so they give you spirits for free then it's the shops problem at the end of the day for being spastic at doing basic maths...

Is it possible that he keeps forgetting to take the bottle of vodka out of his jacket pocket when he gets to the till?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,989 ✭✭✭Noo

How have they not charged you a few times for bottles of vodka. I can't remember the last time i got under charged for anything let alone the same type of item numerous times in the same shop! Don't get me wrong Im all for saying nothing but this is very odd.

Teddy making more notes again lol

I still can't get this image out of my head....
I also sometimes go to take a piss, and stand over the bowl and imagine I have 5 seconds to piss in the face of someone who has wronged me. I imagine they are taunting me and unless I time it just right a perspex screen will appear and shield them from being blasted with my piss.

I don't think anyone in AH will sleep well tonight.

I even mentioned it on one occasion and the assistant said that she had all items accounted for.

That's no excuse tbh, it might happen once and that's fair enough but not a second time.
If you are caught leaving with items you have not paid for it's you who is wrong not the assistant.

You should try taking the vodka out of your inside coat pocket at the till op :D

What do you mean you aren't being charged? Do you hide the bottle? Because that's just stealing.

Sounds like that particular bottle of vodka isn't programmed into the till. Staff scans it and assumes it has registared, but doesn't.

    Vodka 10e
    Fags 8.50e
    Coke 1 or 2e

So you're getting charged what each time, around 10e?

I honestly have no idea how they miss the vodka or think the price is correct!

If you are buying vodka / coke and ciggies you're probably drinking dollies in the local field and your 15 years old.

Keep your money for some contraception !

    Generalise much do you?

If I get get undercharged I will point it out. If I get given too much change back I will point it out. Simple. If it happens to someone else then it is up to them to make their own choice. I'm not going to pat them on the back and say they did well to get away with it. A real person gets in trouble or has a bad day because you were not honest...simple. If you are happy with that or that type of person then good for you, carry on. Its your choice and your life to be honest in a certain situation or not and will show the type of person you are. Its not exactly a bank robbery and there are far worse things people do but it all shapes your character as a person for future decisions which may be important and make a big difference.

And yes, LighterGuy, a lot of us are hypocrits in a lot of ways including me.

An opinion "on" the situation is perfectly acceptable. The OP is querying what people think about his situation.
If he were asking for opinions "in" the situation, he would need readers to conjecture how they would feel if they were in his position. Also, if he were using "in", would a comma not be required in front of the "in" to indicate the separate clause?

I also fail to see why one would replace the OP's use of "people's" with your suggestion of "peoples' ". The OP is looking for the general opinion of a group of people, I assume, which is how he has phrased it, whereas your suggestion requests the singular general opinion of a number of groups of people... no?

I always am honest at checkouts. Its the poor shop assistant who will suffer if they screw up and undercharge you. Not holier than thou here, just treat people as you would like to be treated. You get a lot more back in the long run.

You do know or supposed to scan the vodka in the self service checkout in tesco.

Well the security footage (most of these little shops have it) would show that he brought it to the till and the dope on the counter can't do his/her job properly (putting the assistant in the wrong)

If there was no security footage then the assistant in question would either say-oops I forgot to scan (putting him/her in the wrong) or make up a lie to cover his/her arse (also putting him/her in the wrong).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,893 ✭✭✭Hannibal Smith

Just goes to show how dim the person is on the till, that they're so reliant on the scanner they can't spot a mistake. You buy coke, fags and vodka and it must only come to around a tenner..(8 or so for fags and 2 for coke)

If it happened once I'd say nowt, if it happened after that I would because my thinking would be the vodka hasn't been logged on their system or something, so the scanner isn't reading it. Therefore if you're not being charged, neither is anyone else and the shop owner's gonna be screwed when he comes to do his books.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,187 ✭✭✭psychward

so where is this store ? just so I can avoid temptation and know where not to shop :):pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,562 ✭✭✭✭Sunnyisland

When you shop do you not put all items on counter and then said items are scanned,How would anybody miss a bottle of vodka in between cigarettes and coke ? and it happened a few times, me thinks shop assistants are sipping some vodka.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,754 ✭✭✭oldyouth

I always check my change. If it is under or over, I point it out to the shop assistant. I wouldn't have picked up an item as a purchase, if I wasn't prepared to part with the cash
