I'm after a english springer bitch pup. I'm looking for advice and help. I am thinking about getting a pup since the shooting season opened and i can't make up my mind. I know that donedeal is full of pups but everyone you ring up tells you that there dog is the b's and e's!! Maybe they are??!
A boy i know is selling pups and i was along whith him one night when someone rang about one. He talked pure crap about the dame and sire for 10 mins on the phone and the truth of the whole thing is he doesn't even shoot. He just breads for money. i was up his way one evening shooting a magpie for him and the two dogs are gun shy.
so this is where you come in!!;) I had a dog before so i know how valubale a good one is. does anyone know where there is a GENUINE top bread of a pup for sale or coming up for sale. I'd want it to be around 8 weeks old, ikc registered and needles to say i want to see the sire and dame working. i live in the north west but i'll travel for the real macoy!! The pup will be going to a real good home. please please please no muts!!

I would wait until the season is over because any genuine shooter is not going to have his bitch whelping in the middle of the season hence get no shooting done for the year. Obviously this does not apply to all cases but it may be one way to whittle down a genuine breeder. Buying a pup at that time of year also means you have the whole summer with long evenings to get going with your pup. Also do not take what every breeder says as truth believe half what you see and none of what you hear.;) What I would do is ask a shooting man in your area someone involved in the local club they will know who has a bitch who is putting her in pup. It may mean that you have to be patient but at least you can be sure that the pup you are getting has the breeding behind her. I will keep my ears open for you as I am sure other lads on here will as well.

bring someone with you who knows a few things about pups. no point looking at a litter and taking the cutest pup you see.
Also you can ask them to see the parent working cover. some chancers as you said are just in it for the money.

How much are looking to spend? Would you not be safer to save some money until next year and buy a half trained or fully trained dog? Maybe buy it at the end of the summer so you can get used to it and it used to u..

As for a pup, forget about lines and champions in the bloodline, go with a pup you can see the mother and father working, if both parents are working you will have a better chance of the pup working as well. As it was mentioned above about having a working bitch in pup is very odd this time of year.

IMO I would save for a working dog for next year around 18months,it will be only 300-500 more than a pup that may turn out gun shy. So throw an extra 30-50e away a month and ur set

personally i would buy a pup if you came across one from working stock i new of a few but would be 6months now as nowone i no of breeds during the season as the bitch is no good for hunting. i see you are from the north west and was wonder would you not pick a dog that wasnt ikc registered and get a kc instead only difference its english kennel club and there are some good dogs around the north

If i had a mind to put my bitch into pup again , the shooting season wouldnt determine the date , the bitch would . She only comes into season twice a year.

If your not confident about being able to find a genuine litter on done deal I think your best bet is to find the pup through word of mouth from lads in your local gun club. The good dog men will know of good litters both near by and further distances from you. If you do reply to an add you'll be able to tell a spoofed to a genuine breeder within 10 mins, although it might be a good idea to look at the dame out in the field. As has been said, keep an eye out in the north aswell, you can transfer KC membership to IKC duel membership easily. Also look up champdogs.co.uk. There are Irish breeders on this also but mainly UK breeders, but these would be all (mostly) genuine breeders who are into breeding for the promotion of the breed and if they don't have a litter or a litter that wouldn't suit you they'll send you in the right direction. Good luck with your search

Cheers lads and thanks for all the comments and tips. some real good points. I think i'll stick with the pup idea because its the joy and the challange of seening her grow and learn all the tricks of the trade!! As far as the comment on the gun shy bit i've the cure for that. Picked it up of a old fellow beside me years ago. Does anyone know of bitch pup for sale, something like i'm after!? Of a smashing hunting backround! would i be rite in saying if i got a pup now 2 month old that i'd be able to hunt with it come september? Cheers again lads

everyone you ring up tells you that there dog is the b's and e's!!

    Do you mean "Bees Knees"?

Don't go buying a dog on donedeal.

Are you in a club? Meet a few of the lads and mention your looking for a pup I am sure they will give advice and might know of one.

FTCH stands for afaik field trial champion.

was reading there a few weeks ago about FTC om the blood line papers can be either a trial or test champion. Just wondering which... does anyone know anything about this. It was an old article from the UK I read.

afaik :D -just gooled it - thought it was some strange governing body for spaniels I never heard of.

well thats a new one to me! I always though it was the b's and e's not bees knees.:o so checked it up and i'm not on my own! Its a British expression "B's and E's" meaning "be all and end all".:D anyway that chat isn't going to source me my pup! I was at a local christmas shoot at the weekend and mentioned it. No one knew where i could get a pup at present but the boys said they would ask around. Never thought on the theory that a man that thinks alot of his bitch wouldn't put her in pup this time of year. How much would you expect to pay for a good pup?

just of the phone to larry at TOBYHILL GUNDOGS. He's a real gentleman on the phone and explained the way you end up with a pup. He said the next two litters of pups are spoken for. But he said fill in the application form, email it to him and he'd put me on the list. His price is E650 per pup and when the pups settle in at 5 days old or so he picks the pup for you.

I had the brother of urs Kevin and he was hunting from the age 6 months, term will tell you he was one a million working dog, sadly had to let him go, was talking to the man who owns him now and has over 40 pheasants with him :(

i told you not to sell him......:mad:

terminator2 are you thinking of breeding again? it would be worth the wait if you were kevin

Have to agree with EP, Price is one thing but him picking the pup for you is not on in my opinion. You do not go in to car dealership and the salesman picks out the car for you! Picking a pup is a personal thing it will be your dog so should be your choice not for someone else to choose for you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭terminator2

are ye all putting a gun to my head now :), i was going to breed off her again eventually , cant guarantee the size of the litter or the sex of the pups

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 kevin g

    yep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭terminator2

its very easy on that side of the fence , but on this side there could be 6-8-.....10 pups:eek: , thats a lot of cleaning up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,656 ✭✭✭Spunk84

dont some snotty breeders have that "no breeding" clause when you buy a dog? were you cant breed your dog unless they agree to the blooodlines being used? or the fix the pup so it cant breed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭terminator2

if i buy a dog i buy him balls and all;) you think im snotty

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭terminator2

there are lots of quality springers out there , my advice look around you will eventually come across one you like , ask to see the dam working , i would personally be looking for a pup with a bit of drive , good bone structure straight legs , a good head and nicely marked , and i would be picking the pup myself

I agree with terminator2 I like yourself am new to the Dog scene as in Hunting side though I did train Dogs over 25 years ago I got mine for nothing Springer Spaniel she is so far 5 Months old and has put up a couple of Pheasants and Hunts very well although I have not shot over her yet she's too young look around and ask to see the the Parents don't mind terminator2 on the markings :D:Das this won't make the Dog any better on looks on less your looking for a Model;)only joking you will know when picking the Dog if it's the Dog your after so when you pick the Dog YOU want and not one that was picked for you it will be time to bond and enjoy training together so don't spend a fortune ask in your local Club they will help you find your future shooting partner at a reasonable price enjoy your Hunting Both of You and your coming into a nice time to buy your Pup.
