    Hi all,

I have been on a diet the past 4 weeks and doing very well with it. The only problem is my Christmas party is on Tuesday and i am going to drink at it.

I am a Bulmers drinker and have been just told if i had 15 pints it would be equal to about 3000 cals to which i nearly fell off the chair.

Is there any standard pints that are not as bad as the above. i say standard because im sure there is some German beer thats not bad but i dont wana be asking for something crazy. Are beer better than cider or is it all the same?

    Thanks in advance

As for calorie I think beer is better than cider.

Overall I think vodka is the best (or closest) when taken with diet mixers.

Go out and enjoy yourself for the night, worry about the diet the next day is what I say :).

From what I've read on boards alcoholic drinks aren't processed in the same way regular food is so that 3,000 calories aren't the "same" as 3,000 calories from a takeaway/junk food etc.

Can I make the modest suggestion of maybe not drinking 15 pints of anything?:o

15 pints might be a bit much... you won't need that much if you're eating less and you haven't drank in a while.

In terms of choices of what to drink, most spirits (vodka/gin/whiskey) with diet mixers would be your best bet... then light beer. Other beers (tasty as they may be) have a lot of maltose in them (a type of sugar) and cider will have a lot of fructose (a much worse type of sugar if you're trying to stay slim). Alcohol by itself technically has a lot of calories too, but you don't exactly metabolise them very efficiently.

What you eat that day also has a big impact. When I'm doing strict dieting (we all need projects) and I want a drink I follow the alcohol protocol from leangains (read the sciencey bit if you want, otherwise just scroll down to "How to lose fat or prevent fat gain when drinking").

Basically it amounts to eating a lot of lean protein (chicken and tuna and what not) by itself for the day in question. Watch what you eat once you start drinking too. A friend of mine used to bring a bag of cooked chicken (that he'd salted and spiced the hell out of, lovely when your drunk) to the pub.

If you have to have 15 of anything, have 15 vodkas with diet mixers.

Being a total lush, even 15 pints of cider seems impossible to me. I can only ever drink 1 or 2 ciders.
Anyway, just enjoy yourself and get back to the diet. There's probably 3,500kcals in 15 pints of cider, or so they say, and your body isn't going to store all of them!

Oh 15 pints of cider can be done, trust me!
but it would take a full summer's day to get through them, as well as two hearty meals, and a sea breeze. And a few mates. and possibly a trip involving island hopping across the three aran islands... oh the memories!
