There's a similar place on the quays that does good business.

Asian food store opened in the old Knowles (electrical appliances) store on Lr. Georges St. at the bottom of Library Road in DL.

I think it might be a relocation of the Asian shop down the Peoples Park end of George's Street as that was closed when I walked by last week.

Marks Models gone from DL. Sign up says Hawkins St and some industrial estate are their only locations now.

Supermacs in Blackrock is either closed down, or getting some serious remodeling.

Yeah, I had passed them while going home on the 114 bus today. It is unreal that it is getting completely gutted out for renovation work.

I see that there is major work going onto the ceiling. I wonder what that is about.

The other industrial estate is in Rathcoole on Grants Lane if wondering where it was throughout all this time.

I'm kinda hoping that it's being converted to a Papa John's (who Supermacs also own the franchise rights of).

I hope they do something about the kitchen or how they prepare their food.

The last time I was there I got a limp salt burger with extra salt that looked like a chicken fillet burger.

I know this isnt much good to underage people, but you would feed yourself quite well in the Three Tun Tavern for similar money to Superyaks and its available 8am-11pm

Despite my reservations, Wetherspoons are offering a very punter friendly product

I think they normally end up as dual outlets, or maybe thats what you meant.

I think they can let underage people in if they wish. But there is some time restriction later on.

Their pricing seems really keen, should do quite a trade in Blackrock and in Dunlaoghaire when they open there. Has anyone here had food in the Three Tun Tavern yet?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 298 ✭✭marty_crane

Yes. I went there with work recently. Despite what many think about Wetherspoons I've been to the UK for many football matches and have only good experiences of their burger & a pint, get them in, get them out routine. Blackrock was no different. I'd recommend it without hesitation. No frills, you get what you pay for-the Ryanair of pubs for me.

I'm in smurfit now, so I was gonna drop in on Tuesday, but ended up stopping in the dark horse instead. It's one of the Galway Bay pubs, I didn't realise they had any outside Dublin cork and Galway.

I guess if you're in Blackrock your spoilt for choice now. It's rapidly becoming a great socialising town.

Theres a big thread in the beer forum about it. Most seem very pleased with everything it has to offer. They have good deals most nights, like a "curry night".

Menus here, the images are huge so I won't embed them.

Isn't Caffe Nero (the object of the current 'keep nasty foreigners out of Dalkey' campaign) a British operation?

Even if it is, don't let that affect your prejudice in favour of 'charming' Italian ice cream parlours which I'm sure are bursting with culture.

Caffe Nero are also opening in Donnybrook soon too, a few doors down from The Greenery cafe (great coffee), opposite the stadium. Bakers Cafe just opened around the corner from there too. The area has gone from almost no cafes to potential over-supply in the last year.

Good for Caffe Nero, they'll then have branches in Merrion Sq and Donnybrook but they're still not good enough for the nimbies out in the self-styled 'heritage' village that is Dalkey.

Two shopfitter vans outside today. It looks like it will still be primarily a Supermacs but will now incorporate Pappa John's.

I'm still wondering why Boylesports have two branches virtually across the road from one another on Blackrock Main st.??

The one on the sea side which used to be Celtic (Ivan Yates) Bookmakers was their first branch in Main St. They then took over the old Xtravision store across the road, it was a bargain book store for a few months after Xtravision moved out. The two branches are now decked out in the Boylesports corporate livery and both appear to be there for the long haul. It surely doesn't make commercial sense, unless the lease on the original premises expires soon and they want to play hardball with the renewal or don't intend renewing? But if they didn't intend renewing the lease, they'd have closed that premises by now and consolidated the staff in the new branch

I think it was something about keeping away any competition.
They probably got wind of Paddy Powers being interested in moving in where Xtravision was, and swiped it up first.

They could keep Paddy Power out by renting that premises and then either keep the place shut or sublet it with a non-compete clause.

Running two identical premises so close to one another, presumably with duplicate staff, an identical array of flatscreens, heat, light, insurance etc. seems daft. I seriously doubt that PP wanted to open on that street, they could have done so at any stage in the last 20 years when they were opening branches all over the place (beside the Goat, Baker's Corner, Magic Carpet.....) and did not.

I use the one beside the Breff, and was told by staff in there at the time that they had a row with landlord over rent/lease and told him to feck off, but I was under the impression that it would be fairly soon after the new one opened that old one would close. Must ask again on Sunday

Re. Boylesports, I know in the UK there are limits on the number of gaming machines (which are very high margin for them) that bookies can have in each premises. Where my Brother lives, there are 2 (both reasonably large) Paddy Powers within 50 metres of each other, mainly so they can have a larger number of gaming machines. AFAIK, similar regulations will be included in the Gambling Control Bill 2013, so that might have something to do with it.

That makes sense. It just occurred to me that Supermacs next door is currently undergoing a major refit.

So it's time for a conspiracy theory......... Supermacs wanted to expand, discovered that the lease on the Boylesports premises was due to expire and made the landlord an offer (to kick out Boylesports and give them the lease) he couldn't refuse. The only flaw in the theory is that the refit of the Supermacs place has started but Boylesports haven't yet moved out.

I can only imagine the reaction if Ladbrokes or William Hill tried to open multiple branches in Dalkey to get around that regulation. Bring it on!

I presume it's across the chain but PC World in Carrickmines has closed down and is now incorporated in Currys/PC World

So just to clarify, does curry's pc world still operate the two premises. Or just one. Sad to lose pc world though I rarely shopped there. Went in the other day, they didn't have a single win 8 Ultrabook

In Carrickmines it's just the one-the original Curry's premises. PC World, as was, is closed down.
