Log on to CI and if you go into your profile you will see a notification advising that your licence is due for renewal.

20% used the online system last year for renewals. Although its up on the previous year its a little lower than I would like.

anyway get in there and get it done early!

Usability feedback: It asks for a "UCI category" and I've no clue what to put in there, so I move on.

There was a help button that said enter "elite" unless you were actually racing pro or some such.

Just renewed mine there, well the payment anyway, I was expecting an email to go to the "pay" stage, but noticed it when I went to try to find the above info.

Not seeing that, just the licence info window. I might be losing it and it's staring me in the face, or it might be my OS/browser combination.

Yeah, I can't find it now either, and I didn't know what to choose for that field either. I happened to find the clicky button though, and then I remembered the same question I had last year.

I submitted my application a while ago but didn't pay. Think I got some sort of message about the application having to be approved and that I would be notified to move on to the payment stage. Inspired by this thread, I logged into the website and clicked the membership tab and a 'pay' button had appeared beside my name. I have just paid. Maybe it was there all along.

Well they've taken my money and given me a licence number! So far that's been a whole lot easier than previous years!!

The club secretary has to approve your application before you can pay. Thats usually wht you can't pay early.
Luckily we're got a very good one at the moment....

    Query

ISTR there was some discussion a few months back suggesting that 1 day licenses would not be available in 2012.
The license categories would seem to suggest that this is corrent.
If a person gets a club racing license will there be any facility to buy a 1 day license for A4 races?
I would need to do 12 races to benefit from a full license, and that is probably not on the cards.

There was talk of them being done away with, but they were listed in the 2012 schedule of fees last time I checked.

I am sure 1 dayers will still be available next year. They are useful for Leisure events who would have a lot of non CI members giving the events a go.

When you apply the club sec has to approve the application as the venerable RobFowl said.

Hopefully we will be able to avoid the disaster of last year when we were let down by the back number printers.

An event entry system will be in place for next season as well.

So just to be clear, for an A4 rider who wants to do mabe 3-4 races next year, it is possible to get the CLub Comp license and purchase a 1 day license at the open race?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,031 ✭✭✭CheGuedara

@ ROK ON - I have it from the C.I. office that one day licences will be available for 2012 for those wanting to enter a few open races per year or enter a club league, even if the person buying holds a leisure members licence - the previously proposed changes that would have seen vouchers given to Club comp licence holders to allow entry to an open race before having to buy a full comp licence doesn't seem to have been passed.

@ Morana - the online registration and renewal system's working very smoothly for me for riders licences but there seems to be a lag when it comes to re-registering a club (it actually won't allow payment and says 'Pending Awaiting Cycling Ireland'). Totally understand why it may be operating that way to ensure that new clubs can't just register themselves with C.I. without some form of vetting before hand but is it necessary to delay established clubs looking to renew for another year? So far it's the only hiccup I can see in a system that looks to be working very well.

yes will check it out for you.

Yeah you can use a club comp and 1 day licence to do an open race

I'd like to give racing a go next year. I've never done this.
I guess I need to get an A4 license right? Anyone got a link?

    Thanks.

I think you either need an open license (will let you take part in open races) or a club license (will let you take part in inter club competitions). You could also just buy 1-day licenses if you aren't taking part in that many races.

Recommend joining a club though as it works out cheaper AFAIK but maybe not as you have to join a club which may work out the same.

morana, how does one apply for a license other than online?

How about only supporting an online application process? It might save CI some hassle/expense?

Not everyone has access to online services, did you see the reports in the news over the last few ads that said 21% of Irish people between the ages of 16 and 74 have never once been online?

Last year and the year before I got so frustrated by the online option that I dropped into the office with a completed paper form, paid my money and left! But in fairness this year the online option seems to be really sorted and I found the process completely painless!

by post. Usually club has a meeting forms are filled and sent in.

We, the board, put a motion to the AGM that there would be an additional charge for postal applications but it was defeated. I understand that not all members have access to online.

The good thing about the online is once you have applied and paid if there is any holdup with the licences a list is generated and you can race. If you apply by post there might be a thousand postal apps there...and there wont be any list generated!!!

It's no longer a valid excuse. Drop the mail-in application and go 100% online (like other national cycling authorities do).

EVERYONE has online access. What about those with no computer? Not a legitimate excuse due to the existence of libraries, colleges, schools, neighbors, smart phones, offspring/siblings that are not Luddites, etc.

Seriously, CI needs to save the headaches and expense and get rid of the Victorian license application process.

I fear this all-online concept is something that the old heads in CI may not quite be able to grasp/support.

I think for the future that may be acceptable but given the "issues" over the last few years it is probably reasonable to give people some time to build faith in the online system!

That's just a very eletist and exclusionary attitude.
I do most of my communication, shopping, banking, appications, etc etc on-line, but I appreciate those who write letters to me and Idon't look down disparaginly on them.
There is a whole strata of society that you obviously have no exposure to, knowledge of, or empathy with.

Do all these other National Cycling Authorities send out the licence and race numbers online or does some 'Luddite' have to post them out in batches to the various club secretaries?

1 race number for the whole year? Didn't know it worked that way. I usually pick up a number at sign-on for whatever race I'm entered in. Have to say, the year-long 'permanent' number sounds more ecologically friendly.

Yes, licenses are mailed out by Luddites. Directly to riders, not club secretaries. It takes a while to get the actual license over here (US). Perhaps they only mail batches at a time. Without the license, you can still race by showing a printout of the receipt page.

If there are any issues we print off all of the riders for the comms to allow riders who have paid participate in races. This year we will have 2 permanent numbers!!!!

The receipt print out is a good idea though.

Victorian describes snail mail. So yes, that was judgement on the postal system.

I didn't call anyone a Luddite (didn't know the term was so offensive), I pointed out that one can get online using someones pc - that someone would be a non-Luddite.

Basically my whole point was such a sea-change of a concept - 100% online application - would inconvenience very few and in a minor way, while saving CI time and money.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Forcing users down this route tends to be counterproductive by alienation some of the "customer base". In addition it still seems relatively early days - I've applied for the first time this year and there have been problems that are likely to require manual intervention.

In my view, if you want to encourage online applications, offer a bit of a financial incentive. Once you get a very high take-up (say 95%+), then you can think about going down the Ryanair route, but in my view they will still need to accept postal applications for some time - clearly the costs of administering this reduces and if you do get to less than 5% manual applications I suspect the costs on dealing with those particular applications are likely to be fairly low anyway

" would inconvenience very few" - 20% of Irish adults have never used the Internet - see today's Irish Times (it's on the paper edition anyway - I still like my newspaper in paper)

a restricted licence was brought in to accomodate riders who only do a particular type of event TT in the North for example. I am not too sure if it covers you for club comp.

Tried to login today but couldn't remember my password. Used the 'forgot password' link and it came back with:

"We were unable to generate a new password as you are not an active user. Please contact Cycling Ireland."

I then tried the "Existing CI Members" option. Put in my license no etc and got back:

Where 'clicking here' brings me back to the 'forgot password' page...
