Irish Cyclocross National Championships Details

The dust has settled after one of the driest Irish cyclocross seasons in the past few years. Fast racing in the Supercross Cup saw new venues, variations of old venues and a surge in the number of riders including bringing cyclocross to the masses with the addition of the B category race. The Ulster Cyclocross League brought a different set of challenges to riders with plenty of racing to be had across numerous venues.

After the success of the fourth round of the Supercross Cup in St. Anne's Park, Raheny, Supercross Racing are proud to announce a return to this venue for the National Championships in January. With this venue proving to be a spectacular venue for both riders and spectators we are aiming to get even closer to the Superprestige and GvA feeling with barriers, frites and anything else we can find.

Almost perfect conditions earlier in the year allowed for a fast but technical course to be used. This years National Championships will take in the best sectors from all 3 previous Supercross Courses in the park and introduce some new areas after feedback from riders and park management that will make this course better than ever.

The date for the 2012 National Championships has been set as Saturday the 7th of January. This is due access availability of the park.

Following the Supercross Cup series format of 2011 there will be two races on the day with the National cyclocross champion title race for Senior Men and Ladies* and the (Category 2) non-national title race. Senior Championship Gridding will be based on UCI points and subsequent places allocated based on Supercross Cup and Ulster Cyclocross League results.

*as per UCI rules, to qualify as a national title there will have to be a minimum number ladies racing on the day.

Remember there will be a non-championship race on the day as well, so if you don't think you can mix it with the big boys, you can still come out and race each other and support them. There is no gridding for the non-championship (category 2) event, so be sure to arrive nice and early to claim the primo grid positions.

More information on www.irishcx.com over the following days. Stay off the cake and beer over the festive feasting period. This is going to be a fast course.

Directions to the course are below. It's only 20 minutes from the M1/M50 intersection via the N32 (60kph speed limit, you have been warned!) and Baldoyle. If cycling from the city centre follow the cycle path to Howth until you see the signs into the park. If you get to Howth...you've gone to far.

    1. City Centre from Bus Aras
    • Follow R105 heading towards Five Lamps/Clontarf.
    • At Clontarf take the Clontarf Road ; signed for Howth.
    • Keep the sea on your right.
    • Pass the wooden bridge to Bull Island.
    • Take the signed left had junction after ~ 500m onto Mt Prospect Ave.
    • Right hand turn into St. Annes after 100m.

    2.M50/M1
    • Follow the signs for the N32/Howth/Malahide.
    • Straight through roundabout, junction, 2 roundabouts and a junction.
    • You're in Baldoyle, pass a Lidl, follow Willy Nolan road straight over speed bumps.
    • Right hand turn at a cross roads beside a school (if its a T junction go back, you've gone a junction to far)
    • Right hand turn at the seafront, keeping sea on your left.
    • After 1km you'll see the course on your right.
    • Take the next right up Mt. Prospect Ave.
    • Right turn after 100m into St. Annes.

I've a much better venue down the road anyway. You would get a good course in St Annes for MTB, but it's a CX venue, that's what I've aimed for it over the years and want to keep it that way....for now.

Back on topic, should have more info for you all tomorrow.

I've registered for this, it's my first ever cross race. If you see a nervous looking bloke in his thirties with a Ridley x-bow that looks far too clean, please come over and say hello! :-)

can a mtb be used in the non-championship race??I know they cant be used in the proper championship category's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 441 ✭✭Joey Joe-Joe Jr

There were definitely a few people on MTB's in the B race at the Super Cross Cup in Corkagh Park in November, dont know for sure about this one though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭Rutrider

Mountain bikes are not allowed in the championships category races. However subject to commissaries go ahead they will be allowed in non-championship events. This is on the understanding that those riding are new to racing off road and looking to try this event as a gateway to the sport (the organisers reserve the right to limit numbers as required).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭Rutrider

From the numbers currently available there will be a senior ladies event with 5 signed on. Cyclocross is attracting more and more ladies across Europe and looks like we can run a ladies championships this year which is a fantastic sign for the future. Any more ladies interested in getting themselves an Irish Champion jersey should sign on without delay!!

There is in the region of 90 riders signed up and confirmed payment across all categories. Some lower numbers in some categories meaning in the championship events there might be some surprises in the world rankings next week with world ranking points going for the asking.

In the non-championship events, numbers are good but a good few brave souls are taking the jump and putting their skills to the test in the senior men category, leaving the way clear for some high placings for those looking for a strong result in the standalone event. Any riders looking to improve on their current best should sign up now. Any new riders should follow JJJJr aboves lead for a first race...it's where most riders start their racing experience...I did at the champs in 2001!!! Never looked back since! Most positive experience ever!

If anyone is having trouble with the payment section of sign-on please email supercrosscup@gmail.com to let us know and to ensure we have your name on the list. The only technical issues that should stop you racing is a puncture or drivetrain one...and they hardly ever happen

Out on the course a few days ago and looks like a good few have been rolling around it.. nice and muddy in sections..

billy fish, how is the course in comparison to the last race there..? any major changes?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 671 ✭✭✭billy.fish

    Hi Sean,

Course will be similar, not identical.

Not rode it as I've been in the UK racing so no idea what state it is in.

Will be taking a proper look tomorrow when I get back.

    IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Could riders please respect the park in St Anne’s and stop riding around the Supercross Cup Lap. The park have been in contact with us over the damage being caused by riders in the lead up to the nationals in the park. This could possibly ruin the chance of ever using this fantastic venue again.

I’ve gone to huge lengths to build a relationship with the Dublin parks and St. Annes in particular. Please don’t be the one to ruin this for everyone for the next few years.

    Super and Ultimate.

    Its not that important.

I don't know if you are being facetious or not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 671 ✭✭✭billy.fish

    I am not a facist!

    S - southern
    U - ulster

It applies to where they placed in that league relative to the rank they got on the grid. UCI points taken into account etc etc.

    Commissar sorted the gridding out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭easygoing39

And the gridding for the other class's,please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭Rutrider

The gridding complete. All other riders are advised to arrive in good time to secure a grid position relative to their ability. Further details will be provided on Saturday by the race commissars.

Good luck to all riders on Saturday.

I wonder will the grid go far enough back for me?

Really looking forward to this (despite the extra December kilos!) and looks like the weather might be kind to us!

If that was the case i'd be starting off from Bull Island! :D

The start of this race will be like the sprint for the line at the end of the TDF! Getting a good position will be critical in not being lapped by the Seymour/Aiken/McConville Pain train! :)

    Hi,

If anyone would like to volunteer to marshall during either (or both) of the races, we are looking for a few good men/ladies to give a hand please.

Ideally we would have riders from the B race marshall after their race while riders from the second race will marshall the first race.

If you can make yourself known at the sign-on where we can discuss further and explain where we would like you to marshall.

    Thanks a million

I've raced St Annes twice, on both occasions somebody in the middle of the 'peleton' went skidding on their arse into the first right-hander having reached their top speed.

Plenty of action for the spectators! :)

you should have seen the lumps of tarmac removed from the ground at the end of the day...comical.

    Progressive braking kids :)

    See you all tomorrow.

And its a left hander...maybe thats why they keep crashing?
