Best way to lift weights

    Hi,

Hoping to get some information on how best to approach my weights routine. At the moment it is non existent. I am seeing results (toning up, slight weight loss) due to my changes in diet and exercise. Primarily it has been cardio (Some intervals on the cross-trainer and bike) as well as jogging (outside). I am not looking for dramatic weight loss, perhaps 1/2 stone by end of January given that Xmas is around the corner and ill be having a few drinks over the festive period. If i lost no weight and toned up due to weights id be happy.

My question is what is the most effective way for me to achieve these goals (If it matters i'm 5ft10, 14st). Is it heavy weights/low reps? Light weights lots of reps? I am also unsure about resting periods between sets, what is the norm?
Just trying to be more efficient in my workout to get the most out of it, which is why ive been reluctant post my diet (many of you on here have already helped with this previously). Any help appreciated.

waht weights are you currently doing? Actual exercises, weights being lifted, complete program etc

Do you actually think you can out train your diet though?

    Hi,

Apologies i should have been clearer in the details on my original post.

I am under no illusion i won't out-train my diet, didn't really mean for it to come across like that. I just know my diet won't be as good over the next few weeks which i am OK with. But i'd like to start on a program, get familiar with it, understand the best types of exercises for each muscle group and to just get a more efficient work out.

In terms of what i do at the moment i will stretch a little, then do some cross trainer intervals, when i am giving my legs a break ill generally move over to weights area and do some pulldowns (maybe 3 sets of 8 @ 65-70kg) and then do some other lifts, but this wouldnt be very structured. And that's what i am looking for, someone with a bit of knowledge who could put structure on a routine to make it a better use of my time.

When i referred to not needing diet help i meant that through this forum previously i have improved and am happy i know what i need to do to have a healthy balanced diet and i wanted focus to help me in other areas where my knowledge was lacking (like a good weights routine)

Hopefully that makes it a little clearer and any advice is appreciated
