    Hi,

I bought this guitar the yesterday:

Thing is, when I hold a note on the bottom string, it's rattles a bit. I didn't really notice it happening when trying out the guitar as it was amped up and in fact was delighted with it. They bagged it up for me but when I got home I noticed this problem. It is most noticeable when I'm doing up strokes.

Any ideas what could be the cause of the problem?

Hi, it could be a few reasons. Could be fret buzz from too low action, the string could be hopping on the top nut, a bridge saddle's legs might not be set evenly, the string might be hitting a pickup, a machine-head might be loose.

Is it when its fretted notes or just open?

Actually just when fretted notes, not when open.

Slip a small piece of paper into your low e slot on the nut temporarily. If the buzz is gone, your nut is cut too low. If it isn't gone, either your low e saddle is too low or the bass side of your pickups is too high

Its most likely the setup so. Since its brand new I'd bring it back and get them to have a look, a quick setup should do the job. I'd ask them to change the string too just in case its damaged.
