    That comes under wear & tear and is excluded from household policies, the same way that wiper blades and brake pads are excluded from motor car warranties.

    The Axa Household policy document contains the following....

    Wear and Tear

    Your policy is intended to cover you against unforeseen events like fire or theft. It does not cover wear and tear or damage that occurs gradually over time


    However, even if it was brand new and broke down, they probably wouldn't cover it as then they would fall back on the 'faulty workmanship, faulty design or using faulty materials' exclusion clause. If it didn't break down as a result of an accident (external to the appliance itself) or theft, they generally won't cover it.
