Manchester United must put their European disappointment behind them and focus on the Premier League as they entertain Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils suffered UEFA Champions League heartache in midweek when they bowed out at the group stage following a 2-1 loss to Basel in Switzerland.

United had only needed a draw to progress to the last 16 and their failure to achieve this result has fuelled criticism of Sir Alex Ferguson's current squad.

The prospect of playing in the Europa League after the turn of the year is not quite so appealing for a club so used to challenging for the continent's No.1 prize, and United's main priority for the rest of the campaign will therefore be defending their Premier League crown.

They are currently five points adrift of local rivals Manchester City and recent performances have been less than convincing, although domestically at least they have been able to grind out results and last weekend's 1-0 victory over Aston Villa was the seventh consecutive league game in which United have scored precisely one goal.

Ferguson has demanded a response following the defeat by Basel but a miserable week for United has been compounded by the news that captain and defensive lynchpin Nemanja Vidic is to miss the remainder of the campaign.

The Serbia international centre-back was stretchered off against Basel after twisting his knee and it has since been confirmed that he has sustained a ruptured cruciate ligament.

News of Vidic's injury came just a few days after striker Javier Hernandez picked up an ankle problem at Aston Villa that could keep him sidelined until 2012.

Anderson, Michael Owen, Tom Cleverley and the Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, are also out for United, but Dimitar Berbatov could be available again following an ankle complaint.

    Wolves news

Wolves will be looking to pile more pain on United this Saturday but are also under considerable pressure as they strive to pull clear of trouble.

Mick McCarthy's men did at least give themselves a bit of breathing space last weekend by coming from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 at Molineux.

It was only Wolves' second win in their last 12 games and they remain 16th in the standings, four points clear of the drop zone ahead of a crucial period leading up to Christmas.

Wolves midfielder and former captain Karl Henry is available for the clash with United after serving a one-match suspension.

Henry was unavailable for the success over Sunderland last weekend after incurring five bookings this season.

Central defender Jody Craddock is rated doubtful to overcome a hamstring injury suffered against the Black Cats.

His likely absence could mean a recall for skipper Roger Johnson who was dropped against Sunderland after a run of poor form.

    Possible starting XIs

Manchester United: De Gea, Smalling, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Giggs, Young, Rooney, Welbeck.

Wolves: Hennessey, Zubar, Johnson, Berra, Ward, Hunt, O'Hara, Henry, Jarvis, Fletcher, Doyle.

I hope we line up with the following...
    De Gea
    Smalling Rio Evans Fabio
    Valencia Jones Carrick Nani
    Wellbeck Rooney

I know there are a lot of injuries but really if they don't bounce back with a win here it is going to be a nightmare Christmas period at least.

I can see us taking out midweek frustrations on Wolves. 4-0 United.

will Phil Jones be that knackered that he won't play?

i see a lot of predictions lately without him in the team.

i'd be surprised if he's not somewhere.

With the boards gig this evening and all the planning that comes with it this will be the first united game I won't get to see this season! :(
United haven't had a proper performance in a while - I can see this being another sloppy game - but hopefully it'll still end with the three points!!

According to twitter, the UTD line up is as I posted in the OP, which if true would mean it's the first time I've guessed correctly! :p

It's good to see Fergie rightly dropping Young.

You have Fabio, Evra is starting!

Yeah I had Fabio because that's who I wanted to start, but I knew Evra would start. So technically I'm still right. :)

Giggs has been dropped to the bench according to SSN, and Valencia starts.

i assume that means Jones in midfield then.

I'm going to go ahead and predict Valencia as MOTM.

    Here ya go lads :)

De Gea; Smalling, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra; Valencia, Jones, Carrick, Nani; Rooney, Welbeck.

    Young dropped, interesting.

I think United will win, but there's a good chance of them conceding.

    3-1.

It's good to see Fergie rightly dropping Young.

you have Fabio starting at LB. He's out injured after the Crystal Palice game.
Young is injured also as far as I know, not "deservedly dropped". His broken toe that he was just after getting over was acting up again, and apparantly he has ice on his knee after coming off against Basle.
Though infairness he does deserve to be dropped, even if he was/is fit

Happy enough with that side. Time for Valencia to do something.

Young picked up a reoccurrence of the toe injury on Wednesday.( fit enough for bench though )

    any link for the game?

They're supposed to be showing the United game on that at 3, looks a decent stream.

Anyone know what Wolves's RB is like? I was hoping Nani would have tons of space on the right because of the defensive liability that is Ward, but with Valencia in for Young, chances are Nani will spend 70% of the game on the left instead.

What happened to Johnny Evans he used to be pretty good. I thought he'd get better but appears to be getting worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭Cypher_sounds

Wolves are really up for this one.

See De Gea trying to make a decision whether to go out for that last cross or not, seemed uncertain about what to do.

When will we score from a corner again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,973 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

When will we score from a corner again?

Never. Corners aren't even an opportunity gained for us any more coz we are useless at them.

Lovely through ball from carrick, rooney could have scored.

68 games without a goal for Carrick...that's way too long!
