Tell us about your best friend (your mobile phone). What type & make have you got? are you proud of it, do you deliberately leave it on the desk during meetings to impress others? Do you like to have the latest technology? Does size matter, is yours very Big & loud, or very small, smooth & compact :D

So go on then, "Blagg about your Mobile phone", your iPhone thingy, or your 1990s brick which still works! Any funny mobile phone stories? and out of interest do we still call them mobile phones, or are some people now calling them Cell Phones (like the Americans & the Australians)?

So many types, so many terms/ Smart phone, iPhone, Clam Shell (flip phone), 1990s brick, el cheapo pay as you go, VGA camera phone, Slide or Swivel, Qwerty keyboard, Touch screen, Dream phone, or Blackberry . . . . .

Why didn't you just ask, "Do you have an iPhone?"?

I have a phone.. it's a Nokia. I don't know what model it is and can't be arsed checking.

If people need to feel proud of their phone then something must be missing in their life, imo.

Some 6 year old samsung. It calls people, texts them and receives both, it has taken a beating and not broken, it's gotten lost and found me. Best phone ever.

I have NoPhone. It's remarkably inexpensive, but not great coverage.

    iPhone 4.
No I don't deliberately leave it on the desk for all to see and it's kept on silent all day as I'll either hear or feel the vibration on it.

In fairness, you're some right gob****e if you feel the need to spend €600 on a phone just to flash it on the desk all day and have the iPhone Marimba ringtone blast all over the office every ten minutes...

I have that cheapo Blackberry 8520........will have to upgrade it soon...so plasticy and creaky.

It's the first phone I've had that did more than call and text though so I'm happy

It's a fucking phone, not a Nobel prize winner.

I've got an android(Samsung Galaxy Europa). It's ok, but it eats away your credit which is kind've annoying. Other then calls and texts I rarely use any of the features on the phone which I guess is a little disappointing.

I have one that I got as a present about three months ago and haven't used yet. I have no idea what make or model it is but it's a basic one without anything fancy, apart from a built in radio.

EDIT - I just looked at it for the first time since I put it away on a shelf months ago. It's an Alcatel OT-209

I have an auld nokia that I bought for 50 euro about five years ago. I'm terrible with money but never understood spending a fortune on a phone. Its stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,077 ✭✭✭✭bnt

Currently using a cheapo Alcatel flip phone, which does little more than make and receive calls and texts. I got it because I have a big head - literally - and was sick of trying to talk in to a microphone halfway up the side of my face. I know that a lot of research has gone in to making that sort of thing work, but my audio engineering experience says that a microphone works best near the source of the sound it's trying to pick up. (Old school, eh?) The call quality I'm getting seems to bear this out - I feel happier talking normally, and people have no trouble hearing me.

edit: forgot to mention the best thing about it: I get a standby battery life of about 12 days. Dunno if "proud" is the right word - I didn't build the thing, I just bought it.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

well a decent smartphone is an internet device first and phone second these days. they're especially handy if you travel a lot, can use it as a wifi hotspot for a laptop if you're stuck, replaces gps in your car so thats the cost of a satnav saved if you drive.
I really wish people would use their smartphones more like smartphones, I work in the phone industry and the amount of people that buy an iphone then ring to have the data switched off or want to know how to delete apps is unreal, wtf did you buy an iphone for then?! a 40 quid nokia will call and text just as well if thats all you use it for.

its all the stuff people dont realise smartphones do that makes them worthwhile, if you're a big social network user you have instant facebook, twitter, email and web access, its a mini kindle reader for books, its a satnav, a barcode reader, if you have apps like skype, whatsapp and viber you dont need to pay for calls and texts to other users and most, most importantly?

you can play angry birds on the jacks.

If you sign up to a 24 month contract for €45/month costing €1,080 when the phone itself is circa €600. Missed economics class did you?

yes they are, if you replace the word "free" with "45 quid a month for 24 months, totalling a minimum of 1080 quid for a phone you can for 599 sim free from apple" no such thing as a free iphone. the cost of the phone is subsidised over the lenght of your contract.

Yes, yes I'm well aware of how a mobile contract works thanks. I was just pointing out to the other poster that an iPhone is hardly a status symbol....

    HTC Desire

Have it a year and I have to say I use it a lot and not just for calls and texts, work in front of a computer all day so my phone acts as a computer for me in the evenings, don't need a laptop/computer.

One thing though, the battery is shi*t

well thats true, iphones are common as muck these days, they're no longer the "omg i have an iphone" symbol they were when they were first launched (the original iphone is a dinosaur of a phone now, doesnt even have picture messaging ffs)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 388 ✭✭El.duderino

    Funny thing this phone evolution.

    First there was bricks.

Then cool phones got really small and slim. Candy bars and flip-phones The nokia era.

Then came the SMartAsS phone. This is latest turning point. Evolution turns back towards the brick. I just got rid samsung galaxy. It was a great phone. An app to do pretty much about anything. But it was a brick of a phone. The new samsung note is even bigger than S2. Phones are getting closer to tablets/laptops. WTF would anybody use a ipad or tablet to make a phonecall. Its same as 80,s yuppie pulling out his brief-case brick and ringing his pals. Its not cool ,You look like a wally.

New phone is Motorola Defy plus. Its a smartphone that you can put in a pint and it wont die. Its small(For a smart phone) and the battery last nearly 3 days! For non smartphone users. This is long time, because these phones drain quicker than a public sector budget! Around 1 day depending on usage.

Exactly, it gets irritating watching people whip them out in the pub or wherever as if they're so cutting edge or ahead of the game.

Nothing against the actual phone mind, just a selection of it's owners.

the iphone is a great phone, not without its disadvantages though, android does some things better, ios does others, its all personal preference really. I'm torn between a 4s and a sony Arc, which is a beast of a phone:

I have a Sony-Ericsson W810i. I got it in 2006 and have lost it a few times, dropped it many times and used it constantly. It still works so I feel it would be unfair to decommission it.

I bought a Samsung europa for 49 quid, has internet and twitter and a camera and works as a phone too :P

It's grand for a pay as you go. Nothing flashy that I would lose me mind over losing as I inevitably will.
