Work Email (Microsoft Office) and Nokias

I'm hoping someone on here might be explain this one simply for me! Was gonna post it in the N8 thread but assume same applies across all Nokias. I'm trying to set up my email account on my mobile so that I see my live work account via the phone like you would on a Blackberry. I have emails forwarded to date which is useless as my sent items don't sync with the sent items I see in the office.

There seem to be three options - webmail, mail for exchange and just accessing the server to pull mails off it(?).

Webmail - the company uses webmail, so I can go to https://webmail.companyname.ie/ and log into my email account. I see my live sent items and live inbox, but it's messy to work around.

Mail 4 Exchange - Nokias have this pack built in to set up your email account in a more easy-to-view way, or so I believe! I've tried countless times inputting the various server details but it nevers works for me!

    Ok, so my questions:
    1) Is the simple fact that we have access to webmail sufficient setup on the company network to be able to use mail for exchange, or do you need something else set up on the work server (like with Blackberrys)?
    2) If so, can someone give me an idiots guide to setting it up!?

I've found loads of guides to it online but none seem to work for me!

I just set this up for a friend on his Nokia E5 yesterday - it was very straight forward.

The Exchange server is the webmail address : webmail.company.ie

    The username is firstname.lastname.

When you log in via the webpage, you typically put in "Domain\firstname.lastname". The Domain part is the next bit you need for the settings.

Then all that is needed is the password for the account.

    Worked first time for me.

Thanks for the tips. I've done exactly that but get the message "Exchange server error. Try again later."
    1) Did your friend just use webmail previously or did something have to be set up on the mail server for this to work?
    2) I assume you set the account up as "Mail for Exchange"?
    2) I've done exactly as you said:
    Mail: my exact email address
Username: the bit after the domain name when logging in - it's actually full surname followed by first initial
    Password: as per current password
    Server name: webmail.company.ie - assume I don't need the https://?
Domain name: as per when I use webmail
Advanced settings: left as is. Port number 443 I assume is the default.

    Any other ideas?

The username is whatever goes before the '@' in the e-mail address which isn't necessarily in the format john.murphy

Yeah this one I'd really like a definitive answer to take Joe Bloggs
    My email is joe.bloggs@company.ie
But when I log in to webmail I put in domain\bloggsj
To me the bloggsj is the "user name" surely?

Depending on the version of Windows Server that Exchange is installed on, you may need to put input your username as domain\bloggsj in the phone settings, just as you do for your webmail login.

Regardless of what your email address is, whatever you put into the username field of the Webmail login, that is your username. In this case, your username is bloggsj, and the email address joe.bloggs@company.ie is just an additional email address tagged onto that username.

Ok thanks will try to re-create with the domain before my user name. What about the "https://" part - does that add any value or is it a given? Should the "domain" simple be the domain name or mail.domain.ie?

The domain field is actually your internal domain, not mail.domain.ie. The setting is optional, instead of putting domain/bloggsj as your username, you could type the domain in the domain field and just your username the username field but in my experience, it's better to put domain/bloggsj as the username and leave the domain field blank. You don't need to enter the https:// part anywhere but you may need to look for a setting on your phone that says something like "use secure connection" and turn this on, if you are using https to access your webmail.

Thanks all for the replies. Unfortunately still getting the same error message. I checked and yes "use secure connection" is enabled and I've tried both with and without the https:// plus also the method of including the domain in the user name field with the \ plus also putting them each in their own fields.

Is there possibly something at the server end blocking it or that needs to be enabled, or is the fact that webmail is available to me enough that it should work? I can even get webmail via the N8's browser, but that's much harder to work with.

Lastly, still haven't clarified is it definitely "Mail for Exchange" I should set the account up as? The other option is simply "other"...

It really depends very much on how your exchange is configured and hosted and what connection paths exist between it and the internet. You really need to talk to your IT dept or whoever setup exchange for you.

Digging this thread back up with another query.

Kinda looking at maybe moving to Windows Mobile (e.g. Lumia 800 or similar). Is WM much less likely to give me problems trying to get an easy way to view emails offline? Is there better integration with Webmail or just interacting with a Microsoft Exchange system? Sorry I know that's not the techiest of questions, but I'm only looking for a top-level answer anyway!

It's windows phone, not windows mobile.

It has exchange integration built in and works great with my works exchange server. Very simple to set up if you have the settings from your IT department.

The exchange server has to be set up to allow the phone to authenticate correctly, it probably isn't in your case. there's sites like this that will check your connectivity/credentials for you https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/
