Weight Lifting Technique

    Hey all

    I've just started doing a bit of training, and I have a quick question with regards to Bicep Curls and Hammer Curls...

    Is it OK to do both exercises in a seated position?

    As when i do them in a standing position, my technique doesn't seem to be great and i just want to safeguard myself from injury.

    just want to add, don't lean one way or the other when doing them while seated. Much higher risk of injury when leaning and seated than when standing and swaying slightly, imo.

    I've taken to seated curls when increasing weight as want to nail form. But at the expense of the compensation effect in standing. Just wondering why would seated be more of a risk?

    I don't know if it's proven to be more of a risk but IMO it's certainly dodgier. If you lean one side to the other when you're standing up it's not as stressful on your lower back as when you do it sitting down. If you sit down and don't lean to either side (it's difficult not to lean when going to failure) then great but you're always going to sway to one side to try get that last rep out.

    I think people over-think form when doing something as simple as curls. I mean so what if there's a small bit of sway when you're standing up? You're still using your biceps to get the weight up. The risk of injury doing curls sitting or standing is very low anyway so I wouldn't worry about it. Personally I'd just advise people to do them standing up because if they want to do a few negatives at the end it's much easier to get the weight up when standing and also less risky than when seated, IMO. Again, this is just what I think from doing both seated and standing. I still do seated on occasion but standing is my preference!
