    Great news for the city and at a very keen price. The route is great. Roll on June

    Looking at the route, the hill from mile 8 approx to mile 14 will i guess put some people off but the price is keen.

    Any idea which part of the course will the half be run on as well?

    Their promo picture on the homepage is taken from the Berlin Marathon this year.
    Lofty aspirations.

    Swore I had run my last marathon in sept, but tempted by this.

    Great news. Hope they get a good crowd there are a lot of marathons on now. Does anybody know if Waterford AC are involved in the organisation? I hope so, they really know how to run a good event.

    Great news, which will hopefully bring a welcome boost to the city. Very very tempted to put off Cork, and stay at home instead :)

    That hill in the middle is a beaut. Will put alot of people off. I hope there is room for this race, there are alot of marathons in Ireland at the moment.

    Looks great. One piece of advice to the organizers: flatten out that elevation profile. The hill/climb is actually very small (230 feet / 70 meters), over the course of 5.8 miles, which is about 12m climb per mile, which is pretty close to flat. They'll likely put off a number of runners using a profile like that! If they increase the range on the Y axis (0-1,000ft) it should do the job.

    Does it start at the track in Waterford and finish on the Quays, or the other way around? Wouldn't mind doing this one. Do they need any pacers? :)

    I think it starts in town and finishes at the track.
    Good idea on the elevation profile alright,i may try contact someone about that.As for pacers...i have no idea,they might wait and see how registration is going

    Krusty_Clown,

    Your right about the hill. I live on top of that hill and it not that bad. It's slightly over two miles from the Cork Road to the top. Okay it’s long but NOT steep.

    Lucky enough it around the middle of the race so we should be relatively fresh.

    I believe the finish is the RAC track which they use for the half marathons. Great finishing on a track with "Chariots of Fire" in the backround of the mind!!!

    Yeah i remember the bogtrotters profile was the same. 12m a mile over 5 miles is nothing and as was said it comes fairly early.
    As for pacers being being involved, i think all the other Irish marathons esp Dublin has shown that pacers add a huge amount for very little cost. Foolish not to have them to be honest

    I ran most of that stretch with Village Runner as a warm-down after the National Half marathon a couple of months ago. If you look at this, you can see how flat it is.

    this should be great .. i agree change the profile map... makes hill look like a monster... could be a fast marathon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,703 ✭✭✭BrokenMan

    Hopefully will do this one. Just noticed though that the price has gone up to €50 already and the half marathon option seems to have disappeared.

    I wonder what the price will be after Feb 1st as there doesn't seem to be any mention of that.

    i dont think it will be a fast marathon course, there is some tough climbs once you turn off at Tramore Cross.

    Its great to finally have a marathon in our city.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭finbarrrr

    But then I don't think the hill From "Tramore Cross" is much more difficult than say the Bridge on Clonskeagh road up to the Spar Shop on Fosters Ave junction during DCM. Plus it has the advantage it's also earlier in the run. It's a lovely run from the top of that bump into Tramore.

    9 time out of 10 it's a tail wind from Tramore into Waterford and the finish line!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    Thought i would bump this up the list.

    Anyone on here thinking of doing this ?
    From people i have been talking to anyway the interest is there,i will be doing this as its in the Deise.

    Just signed up today for first ever marathon and looking forward to it. Receipt number was 0047 - presume I am the 47th entrant?? Hope the numbers entering increase dramatically... Gonna need company to get me through the second half of the course :).

    Was thinking about this as an early year marathon ahead of an autumn one...

    Does anyone know if a marathon entry is transferable to the half should I not go ahead with it? I mailed the organisers but got no reply.

    Yes you can - this is from their website

    "Can I transfer from the half to the full marathon and vice versa?"

    You can transfer from one to the other once you let us know before June 15th.

    I'm going to give this a shot and will sign up before the end of the month.

    There is a course outline here http://www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com/viking-marathon-routes.html - Looks like the half marathon will start just after Orchardstown.

    Looks like I'll be doing this for my second crack at the distance, putting it out there now , going for sub 3 :)

    Concerned about it being the first running of the race I emailed the organisers with a few questions which they had no problem answering, and gave permission to repost up here if of use to anyone else

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hi
    The location and date for your marathon suit me and I'd be eager to run it
    Just the fact that this will be it's first ever running putting a bit of doubt in my mind for the moment
    I hope you don't mind me asking you a few questions please?
    Who is organising this? Is it you / WLR FM / are a club involved / someone else?
    Have these people / this person ever organised any races before?
    How do we know that the course will be accurately measured?
    Can we be assured of adequate water stations and marshalls etc?
    Sorry, I don't mean to cause any offence in asking these questions, just trying to choose between this and Cork at the minute, I've ran Cork before and found it to be a really well organised race.
    Thanks for taking the time to answer these few questions
    Kind regards
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    WLR fm are the instigators of the whole Waterford marathon concept and are delighted to be driving it. However, many of our local athletic clubs will be involved in race preparation itself. We will be drawing from resources across Waterford AC, West Waterford AC, St.Senan's and St.Joseph's and of course Waterford Road Runners.
    If you've been at any events organised by any of these clubs, you'll certainly have come to expect a very high level of organisation and we hope to continue that with their help.

    There will most certainly be adequate water stops. Given it's June, we are planning on one every 2 to 3 miles, as well as the (now) usual energy drinks which we're working on with suppliers.

    The race has an AAI permit and will be fully insured. Over the next couple of months we will be asking a qualified Jones Counter ''user' to come down and accurately measure the course to Olympic Marathon distance, once that's done, the distance will be perfectly exact!

    Marshalling and safety is number 1 with most events as you know. With the recent tall ships event we potentially have access, through wlr, to the Waterford Volunteer group. We're also hoping to use club members from eachclub to marshall a specific section of the course, this way there will be an experienced person at most locations.

    We're also potentially looking at doing mini-roadshows in local factories/clubs if numbers warrant it. Mail adele@waterfordroadrunners.com if you think your company/club would be interested in this!

    We're still working through some things as I mentioned before, but entries are looking good so far with over 50 registered, which is great for a new event...especially a marathon one!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Anyway, that's the response I got from them so maybe it might be of some use to others. Reckon I'll be signing up after the Dungarvan 10.
    Hi, thinking of attempting this marathon as my first.:confused: Did the half marathon in Waterford in December and I feel it would be a shame not to at least attempt this. Just wondering does anyone know a good training programme for a first time marathon runner? Also if there any marathon training groups getting together in Waterford? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.:)
    Hi, this was posted on the WAC facebook page last weekend. Best of luck with your training :)
    "Great to see about 40 runners turned up this am at Superquinn at 9am for a run. All levels catered for from 8min mile to 10 min mile. Plan is to do 6 miles this week and next week and then 8 miles. The group are training for the Vinking Marathon in June but even if you are not planning for the full come along and enjoy the benefits of running with a group"
    This might be a plan B for me when I get back, I see there are big group LSR sessions most weekends, can anyone hop into those, might pop down closer to the time to run bits of the course?
    Saisy + MarathonmanPat ... Sunday morning run 9am at Superquinn, Geared towards people doing the Viking Marathon. We did 8miles today at 8min mile pace, but there are 6 mile runnners there and any pace is catered for.
    well worth the effort of geting outta the bed on a Sunday morn!! :)
    and of course the Winter League on every Thursday at 7, a good 5mile run
    Early bird €40 finishes tonight, rises to €50 from tomorrow to end of May, still good value compared to others.
