Irish and Proud

I have been thinking about starting a trivia thread on this forum now that there is no real road construction happening at the moment. With this in mind, I'll start the ball rolling with:

Do you know?

When I was 9, I was facinated by the Naas Road Dual Carriageway - it was by far the longest in the ROI stretching all the way from Dublin to Naas in Co. Kildare. :rolleyes:

Do you know that as of today, it is once again by far the longest stretch of Dual Carriageway in the ROI as well as Northern Ireland? Since the barriers were pulled away on the Borris to Nenagh section, what was merely a Dual Carriageway to Naas now ends at Gort in Co Galway - yes, the mainline of the Naas DC. Now, the Dual Carriageway starts in Dublin as the R810 at Bluebell and becomes the R110 to as far as the Red Cow. From there, it becomes the N7 to Naas and continues as the M7 to Limerick (via Port Laoise, Roscrea and Nenagh). In Limerick, the M7 mainline DC continues straight into the N18 Limerick Tunnel DC before continuing to Shannon town (N19 Junction). From there, the DC becomes the M18 which continues past Ennis and on to Gort. We can hopefully make that Tuam in 2013 or 2014!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the above is an interesting fact - would love to know the actual length of the Dual Carriageway in question.

Admitted, the A1 dual carriageway through county Down isn't great in places.

Yeah, that would probably be the longest possible journey in Ireland without encountering a single stretch of two-way single carriageway - another good piece of road trivia!

The Naas Road would be part of the longest continuous mainline dual carriageway which doesn't involve a change between carriageways (as opposed to a change between routes) or even encountering a roundabout - the Red Cow Roundabout is no more.

Here's a factoid:

Of all the schemes responsible for the construction of the M6, M7, M8, and M9, the M8 Mitchelstown - Fermoy scheme was built the most quickly, 16km in 15 months.

It is pretty much the same distance form Ballincollig to the A26 north of Ballymena, where the dualler ends.

Once Gort - Rathmorrisey is done, you'll be able to do the loop, N4/M50 junction, N4, M4, M6, left at Rathmorrisey, M18, N18, N7, M7, N7, left at N7/M50 junction and back to the N4/M50 junction. You'll only have to stop at the toll booths.

This anticlockwise loop is possible, but the clockwise loop WONT be possible as you'll have to stop at the roundabout on the 3-level-stack at Rathmorrisey. You have a sliproad going anticlockwise.

Damnit, I was sure that the recently finished A4 dualling -> A101 at Sprucefield -> A1 and as above would come out more, but it's *only* 489km.

BUT

You can get at least another 500m or so if you also follow the M1 to Junction 8 (as signposted), and then the A101 link road (afaik incorrectly marked as A1 on Google Maps) to the A1. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite push you over the next km mark though.

If you mean that no part of it is in Dublin, the N5.

If you mean it doesn't travel in the direction of Dublin (somewhat subjective) the N12.

Not counting any non-Motorway DC sections of the previous:

N Primary: N13, N19, N21, N22, N24 (Type 3), N25, N27, N28, N29, N31

N Secondary: N51, N52, N62, N71, N81, N85

Think that's complete but can't be 100% sure.

But the R113 sandwiches the M50 between junctions 13 and 14 giving a two lane dual-carriageway with the motorway as the median.

(The R156 does the same with the M3 on the Meath/Dublin border)

The R118 (Wyattville Road) between the M50 and the R828.

(It also has DC sections on the Rock Road past Blackrock and Booterstown - but the road numbering is a bit askance here as the R118 disappears in Dun Laoghaire and reemerges in Blackrock.

That's the N85, as I had.

Some of those R roads are clutching at straws! Some are pretty substantial like the one through Airside, though.

That's easy - old N6 from Galway to Kinnegad.

Stop in Harrys.

Kinnegad - Maynooth - Lucan.

From ther eit depends on whether we're talking pre westlink or not.

Assuming pre westlink: Lucan - Chapelizod - NCR/Islandbridge - Drumcondra - Santry - Airport.

And repeat on the way back (stopping in Ballinasloe instead).

I said I was exlcuding sections of routes covered in the motorway list - the bulk of those have some section of non-M DC. Its pretty much only the M50 and M20 that don't.

The "M32" is no more, that bit of road is no longer inescapable or signed as Motorway.

First article there says the early GSJ was on the "Kilpedder Bypass", I assumed they were one and the same as the NTMK bypass feels OLD when you drive it, earth bank in the middle and all.

Apologies - Delgany junction isn't on the NTMK bypass; it on the Kilpedder bypass; built circa 1972.

Actually the earth bank is a "recent" development. The median was originally flat, but about 10 years ago they laid a major pipeline in the median and simply left the earth piled up.

Its definitely present on the 1995 aerial and yet looks newer than that even. So I'd imagine it was rebuilt.

Another of the pre-1972 underpasses (hint) is also on the Naas road.

Next question:
When did green-background road signs (on national primary routes) with distances in km first appear in this country (RoI)?

ps - the gross signs that appeared on the Naas dual-carriageway in the 1970s (which I'm sure y'all remember) don't count.

Unless the motorway order that enabled its construction has been revoked, then it's still a motorway. It was never signed as such anyway, was ambiguously signed from day one, despite being legally a motorway.
