Not sure if this is the right catgory for this, but it is a health issue..
Wondering if anyone has any info on getting rid of dust mites and bed bugs. Saw a vac on the shopping channel that has a uv light to kill and suck up the mites and their eggs and faeces, as well as dead skin, and then saw some powders on ebay and a plug in light that is supposed to emit ultra sonic sound to kill em..Dont know what is most reliable!
Bedding is easy to keep clean, but its the mattresses that bug me lol..:D

Bed bugs and dust mites are different things.
If the mattress has bed bugs, I'd just throw it out, really hard to get rid off.

If you have bed bugs (and not just dust mites) you have a serious problem. Even dumping the matress will not be enough.

Ya if its bed bugs, you've got a problem. Get an exterminator in to spray the place to be safe if its bothering you that much

I rather think dust mites are the culprit, sneezing, wheezing etc, i know hoovering mattress willl only solve a small part of the problem.

That's mites, bed bugs don't cause a breathing issue. The bite you in your sleep. If they were there you'd know

Oh my goodness--woke up this am at 5 due to intense itching--3 welts are on my foot. It happened last week as well--5-6 bites on my
Leg. What is going on? Bed bugs? My
Sister visited over Xmas from Brooklyn. We are now sleeping in the bed she was using. Should we get the exterminator or what? I can't believe this--my
House is immaculately clean! Please help!

That's a bit drastic, isn't it? She is your sister after all.

If you have bed bugs don't hang around. Kick into action immediately. A few years ago in Perth in Australia we got infested. We reckon one of us brought them in from the hostel we had been staying in, it was right in the middle of the Aussie summer and they love the heat. It started off in one of the bedrooms and gradually spread throughout the apartment. Mawkchunk it sounds like you have bedbugs. They usually start moving in the dead of night, they don't like the daylight. The signature bed bugs usually leave is a line of welts on your body, usually three or four bites on a row on your foot, leg, back etc. Also look out for dark speckles on the bed sheets, crude as it may sound but this is your blood. Take off the bedclothes, put them in a hot wash. Flip the mattress over and carefully examine the corners of the mattress. Do a full examination all along the edge of the matress and any hidden areas, basically any areas where the light never see's, like that flap that runs all along the outside. Do a full examination of the base of the bed again, paying particular attention to the corners. In their infancy they can be white little creatures but as they mature and get more of your blood they become these flat little brown things. Absolutely disgusting. This happened us 3 years ago and to this day, if I get the slightest itch in bed I freak out. Our problem was we didn't know what they were at the start, we had only been in Oz a few weeks. As time went on the problem got worse and worse. They speard everywhere. We had to move out in the end. We had enough. It was a horrible time. They had to get an exterminator in. We had to put all our clothes in really hot washes and we just left them in black plastics bags out in the sun for hours at a time. The heat kills them. My advice is, since this is your home, if you find any evidence of them after your examination, get an exterminator in immediately, don’t hand around because they spread fast once they start getting a taste for blood. Hope this helps!

Oh my gawd. I'm kind of in denial here...Thanks so much for the tips. I think there is a good possibility we have them...They could be in the white small stage as I tore apart the room yesterday and couldn't find any sign of them? It's so disgusting just thinking about them...Making me all itchy just sitting here! Gah! I think they have definetely hit Ireland-running...err--crawling!

They can be hard to find. The bastards like to bite in a line so you usually have 3 or 4 bites in a row. They are much easier to find at night. Get a GOOD exterminator because they are hard to get rid of. I had issues with them in a rented apartment and just cut my losses and moved out. On the bright side they don't appear to do anything other than make you itch and piss you off. They are REALLY phucking irritating. Try to nip it in the bud early is probably the best advice anyone can give. Wash all your bed clothes and put them in sealed bags too. I'm sure google has better advice than I do because like I said I just moved out but that obviously isn't always the easy option or viable option.
