So this Monday iv quit smoking, and drinking completely :) And took up Swimming and cycling :) Not that overweight just have a bit of a belly
I dont eat much at all  , just pasta, noodles etc.. anything quick really, but drink tonnes of water and am on whey protein :)

so question is : Are them 2 forms of exercise sufficient to loose a small bit of weight ?

Probably not tbh. Most people dont burn a tonne of kcals swimming cos theyre too in efficient, and tend to eat tonnes after as well. Cycling tends to be half assed by many cos it takes a long time to get used to operating at higher intensities (acute lower body muscular fatigue being the biggest problem). And the biggest issue is that your diet looks pretty terrible.

    just pasta, noodles etc

Thats probably your problem right there. Aside from the benefits you will see from stopping drinking, reducing your carbs, and eating more veg would probably see you drop weight without doing much additional exercise.
    Run Forrest, Run!!!

If you are fit or not too heavy then running would be good, but if you are heavy, or are not that fit, then you wont be able to run enough to burn enough off, so cycling would IMO be the better option.

after i gave up smoking ( three and a half years ago) i started cycling and lost a lot of weight. however i got really into it over a few months so was doing a lot of miles, also i sorted out my diet.
cycling is a great intro into a life of excerise as you can build up your fitness level without the frustration and pain that can come with starting off running.

well done with quitting the fags and staritng excerising. keep it going and enjoy it and you will not only lose the weight but feel much better generally.

    indeed they do
if you have the time and motivation you can really get into both of them

look at setting a goal for yourself, such as competing in a sprint triathlon in next Spring.
build up the fitness through the cycling and swimming thn a bit of running once the brighter evenings kick in
doing some weights will also help

A lot of people think they are getting a good work out from swimming but its mainly down to the fact the're not swimming properly and can't breath properly.

Swimming and Cycling don't burn a lot of calories it the effort and time you put in that burns the calories. Swimming, Cycling, Running, Cross Trainer, Weight lifting, Sports etc.. all burn lots of calories. Just pick the one's you like to do best and enjoy.

Good man on giving up the cigs, best thing I ever did! :)

Hi! Good on you for quitting the cigs and getting into exercise! I used to run and cycle but found it tough on my shins etc for a while so I took a break and tried some group fitness classes in the local gym. The best one I've found both in terms of calorie burn (according to my heart rate monitor) and fun is boxing. It's very easy to learn the moves and get into it. Also, because not that many people do it, there's a lot of camaraderie between those that do and you always have to partner up with someone so you feel like part of a team and are a bit more accountable if you miss a class or two. It's excellent for toning, abs and cardio and the feel good factor after boxing like a mad thing for 60 mins is hard to beat! I teamed boxing classes with body pump and saw great results. I will get back into cycling but for the winter I think I'll stick to my indoor routines.

Another thing worth checking out for quitting smoking is yoga. Maybe one of the more intense versions? Supposed to be good for helping with cravings.

A combination of cardo & weights preferably in a gym is the best way. If you just do the cardio alone you won't lose quite as much

Thanks Hamy. I'm actually in Australia now and that's where I've gotten into boxing. I just had a look on google and couldn't find many gyms that do it in Ireland, any suggestions? I definitely want to keep going at it when I go home, it's addictive!

It is so important to really enjoy whatever exercise you choose, don't pick something just because you hear it's good for calorie burn, all exercise is good for that and the more you enjoy it the more you'll do it and hey presto, results! But for starting out on exercise it can be daunting so doing it in a group is definitely the way to go!

Why exactly does weight training help so much in fat loss ?

    just curious.

Do something you love or you won't continue with it.

Find a better goal than losing weight - it wno't keep you sufficiently motivated. Find a race in that sport or pick a particular goal.

    Set small achievable, incremental targets.

    Hi Pudzey

I packed in the cigerettes 13 weeks ago today. I decided I was going to try to replace smoking with exercise. I started joggin 10 weeks ago. it's surprising how quickly you can build up the mileage. I've lost 1 stone over the last 10 weeks (still a bit of belly to go) but getting there. To be honest I've been bitten by the exercise bug so I'm going to incorporate core training into my routine after Christmas, apparently it's a very good way to tone up

Haven't you been told to keep all your questions to your own thread in motors? :pac:

If you have taken up cycling why not try spinning classes - excellent for burning calories and due to having the instructor you tend to push yourself more than you would if you were cycling by yourself.

Probably be a bit of the blind leading the blind here :D

I found after about 3 weeks that the worst of the burning chest / lungs had passed. All I've been doing is jogging (cant swim) starting from a very low base. Decided to go the slow and steady route, build the stamina first (aerobic base) and then worry about the pace (thats next year lol). I'm doing 3 runs a week, 2 x 6k and one longer run, around 15K now.

I'm going to try some of the core stuff from this website http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/core-strength-training.html

I'm only new to this myself so hopefully I'm not leading you astray.

Best of luck with it and keep away from the smokes

To quote Friggsyboy - may be blind leading the blind here but I think the only thing for burning belly fat is sit ups - using weights is also good. Maybe join a gym? They will write you up an exercise program based on your goals. You'll have that aul belly down in no time:P

You're right, sit ups will do very little for belly fat
Best form of exercise, to lose weight?

To quote Mike Boyle... table pushaways ; )
Get your diet sorted and find some form of exercise you enjoy doing consistently.

you cannot get rid of the belly alone by sits
fat is lost from all over the body
sit ups only work on the muscles, hidden under the fat
in fact, if you're overweight stay away from sit ups

so, if you want to lose weight - watch what you eat (that is 80% of the effect) and exercise

Weight training is helpful in losing weight because for every lb. of muscle you build, you burn 500 calories a day at rest.

Well unless you are eating more calories than you're expending then no noodles aren't fattening, but then no food is fattening until you eat more calories than you need and if you do then basically all food is fattening. DO you mean are noodles high in fat? Then no, but really it's total calories and not fat content you need to watch for weight
