So the European Heart Network published new recommendations recently relating to diet, physical activity and cardiovascular disease prevention.
They are available for download in pdf from this link:
    European Heart Network

Some worrying stuff in it from an Irish perspective, 65% of men are overweight, ~25% obese. and ~50% and ~22% of women. Shocking stuff.

I'm only getting into reading it, but the recommendations are all the same stuff you tend to hear from safefood et al.

Might drum up a bit of discussion here on the topic. Enjoy.

My thinking on it is as follows:

Our kids are fit generally, there are a lot of activities for young men in particular. In school you study, go home, eat, go training. Once you hit 18 and it's work/college time, the culture is one of few beers/pizza/telly general lazing around unless you're still involved in a sports system such as football or the like. There needs to be more done in terms of access to adult activities.

This is something I've been harping on about for ages in terms of the martial arts (one of my specific areas of interest). I run a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym, and what I see is other gyms and martial arts clubs trying to gobble each other up for the same population. You just need to go look at the Self Defence forum for evidence. If someone posts up "looking for a club" people trip over themselves and often get into arguments trying to prove their club is the best... for one guy. What would be far better would be to view the other clubs as your colleagues in educating the general public about the health, fitness and self defence benefits of martial arts generally. This would likely have the effect of having far more than just the one guy posting on a forum occasionally (who probably won't even turn up).

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw my oar in there and have a rant. Obviously what I do isn't the only adult exercise!

I dont know Barry, i think the general fitness of kids is on the slide big time. Seeing more and more obese kids in the 8 - 11 age group, and the stuff these kids have as snacks after training, fooooook me.
