Enda kenny to spoil the LATE LATE TOY SHOW?

Taoiseach to give State of the Nation address ... before the Toy Show

In an effort to reach as many people as possible, Taoiseach Enda Kenny is considering spoiling everyone's fun and giving a State of the Nation address before the screening of the Late Late Toy Show this Friday.

Kenny is planning to give a speech on live TV over the next week in an attempt to ease the fears of the people ahead of what is likely to be one of the most punitive and draconian budgets seen in this country in many a year.

Although there remains a possibility that Inda might wait until after the budget before addressing the nation, is seems more likely that he will make the speech prior to the budget in an attempt to limit the amount of flak that will inevitably head in the direction of the government afterwards.

As a result, Kenny may well spoil the mood of a nation prior to what is an institution amongst Irish families in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Instead of getting all warm and fuzzy at the sight of Tubs in a cringy Christmas jumper and becoming all childlike at the sight of all those toys, we are all instead likely to become angry and downtrodden and will subsequently adopt a Scrooge-like approach to the festive season.

No date has yet been finalised for the Taoiseach’s address, but government sources seemed to suggest that the slot immediately prior to the Toy Show is the most likely.

"Absolutely, he's still doing it. Probably this weekend. Friday evening perhaps. It might be between the 'Nine News' and the start of the 'Late Late'," a senior source told the Irish Independent.

"The date of it genuinely hasn't been finalised. It will be before or immediately after the Budget -- more likely before. But possibly within 48 hours of the Budget," the source added.

Tea-time on Saturday or Sunday have also been put forward as possible times for the speech, as worries have been expressed about whether or not making a speech prior to the Toy Show sets the right tone.

The Toy Show attracted 1.4 million viewers last year and despite the sometimes obvious lack of appeal of the Late Late Show in general, the annual once-off programme remains extremely popular with Irish audiences.

As we attempt to cling on to any tiny semblances of goodwill in the run-up to Christmas, all we can say is 'Don't do it Enda'.

Tubridy doesn't spoil it every week, cop yourself on.

Kenny should not address the nation before the Late Late Toy show-he would be starting a night which should be enjoyable and Christmassy, on a very low point, which is unfair on kids and adults alike.

    What are ya? 12?

The country's fubared, people are panicking about the budget and the toy-show is one of the most watched shows on Irish TV. Makes perfect sense if he can calm a few heads.

I'm sure the advertisers aren't happy about it as people could be even more worried about money before the show airs.

Something wrong with your tv that you can't change channels and simply not watch it ? And in return, quit the all the drama here about it?

Here's an idea. Bury your head in the sand while Enda Kenny is on tv. You don't have to listen to him.

They should make him do it during the Toy Show while dressed like GI Joe and riding a Tonka Truck.

People would moan about anything. What kind of person gets down or has their xmas ruined by what Enda Kenny has to say before a kids programme. Get a grip.

Argh....what is with this government...bad idea after bad idea. The toy show for so many people is the kick off to Christmas, it a happy family night in and now they are willing to throw a dark cloud over the whole thing. It is so unfair. They just know no one would bother listening to his excuses and drivel any other time unless they are tricked into it. Typical!

Have your "Happy Family night". Turn on RTÉ One five minutes later and ignore all of the **** going on in the real world.

    Why should I?

This is an one night every year that we let the kids stay up late, and they have to look at Enda telling us the country is knackered.

Our kids should be protected from this as much as possible.

Why do you have to look at it? Turn off the tv, turn on TV3, read a book. What is forcing you to look at RTÉ One for those five minutes?

You see your missing the whole point here.

This is one night in the year that the whole family can forget and be young again, enjoy a bit of magic - Kenny has decided to take that night and use it to his advantage by delivering bad news. Yes we all know what that news is but he has no right in doing it before the Toy Show.

It just shows what he thinks of us.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

Don't watch the bloody thing. By you not putting it on, it's up to you to protect your kids from what's on tv. Saying he has no right to appear on tv is laughable when all you have to do is leave another channel on.

You don't have to turn on RTÉ One while Enda Kenny is addressing the country. Your evening does not need to include Enda Kenny.

In fact guys, i'd argue if any bad news occurs on Friday, we should not report it. On the grounds it'll hang over the toy show. :D But seriously, it's probably better to get it out of the way before the Toy Show so that we'll be somewhat prepared for the budget (as much as one can be). I don't think that it'll ruin the experience for the kids and if someone is so upset about it, they can just not watch the news.

The point is he is hijacking a night for kids - if you have kids ask them if they want to look at Enda or toys?

Any other night or even earlier at the 6 news.

Don't look at him so. He is not going to be on the toy show. It's not that hard to comprehend.

Oh FFS, its the TOY SHOW...

I'd definitely rather watch Enda's speech for 5 mins than Tubridy struggling to interact with small people for close on three hours...its an important speech that will effect every single one of us with the budget coming up. The more that see it, the better.

If that is before the toy Show, then so be it. The Toy Show with Tubridy is a load of sh*te anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 758 ✭✭✭whydoibother?

    I'm in favour of it.

The kids most likely won't watch him. If they do, they won't understand enough to be upset.

As to any adult that says they don't want it because it would ruin the excitement of the toy show for them, ... well ... where do you start with that one?

    Kids needn't watch Enda.

TV's have this great thing called an On/Off button. It gives you the power to have the TV switched off while Enda is on the TV and then you can actually switch on the TV when the toy show begins.

Do you understand the concept? Or do you need it broken down in to more simple terms?

Personally I think it's a great idea. We almost never have a State of the Nation address. This is a fantastic chance to reach as many people as possible.

How stupid would it be to have it on the night before or the night after? Pretty much no one would bother watching it. This way it's guaranteed that a large proportion of the country will get to listen to the speech.

If you don't want to see it then don't watch it. I am in a small minority amongst my friends, and the whole country it seems, in that I don't like the X-Factor. There is pretty much nothing I like about it so I just don't watch it. I haven't seen a single second of it this year. I know that there is almost nothing that I can do or say that will change the fact that it is on all weekend, every weekend so I just avoid it like the plague. May I suggest that you try to do the same with regards to the speech.

Afterwards you can go back to your little fantasy world of toys and continue to avoid the many harsh realities relating to our next budget, which will affect your children much longer than the image of Enda "ruining" Christmas.

It's frankly bizarre that advertising to children is banned in the runup to Xmas, with the exception of one orgy of product placement paid for by license payers. What about "The Late Late Car Show" with Bill Cullen plugging the new megane for two hours.

So long as they begin the show with an affable continuity announcer saying something comforting along the lines of "Viewers should be advised that the following programme contains items they will now no longer be able to afford."
I think in keeping with the feel-good theme it should be a singalong State of the Nation address, with Gilmore's head as the little bouncing dot. In the key of "Deck the Halls"

I'm here to tell you you're all buggered
    falalalala lalalala
I'll give it to you straight, words won't be sugared
    falalalala lalalala

Actually it might put people in such a good mood that suddenly having Tubridy-in-a-jumper thrust upon the nation would send the suicide rates through the roof. Ah well, less people putting pressure on the hospitals, eh Dr. Reilly?

Christmas is cancelled Santa does not exist and right now, the revenue is on their way to your house to shake every last penny out of your pockets.

    Thank you Enda!
