After seeing the thread on best character of all time I had to post this thread, who do you think is the best actor or actors of all time.
For me I there are loads but here are a few:

Johnny Depp, can go from being a very comical character like Jack Sparrow to being John Dillinger in Public Enemies.

    Leonardo Dicaprio,

    Al Pacino,

Brad Pitt must people would say he is not that great at acting but I reckon he is pretty good it takes a lot to change from Jessie James to some one like Lt. Aldo Raine in Inglorious Bastards.

Loads more I think are great but just haven't listed them.

    Paul Newman!

He was a complete package. Talented AND sexy as hell!

    Jason Statham
    :pac:

On a serious note though I do actually think Matt Damon is a great actor. Not the greatest of all time but pretty good.

Will Smith, he was great in Bruce Almighty

    Pighead

A character that can cover most roles from the offensive to comedy classics. He has had some turkeys as of late though, not as big a box office draw as he was in the past

Paul Newman is an exceptional actor with a huge list of excellent films to his name and very few turkeys.

I don't think anyone comes close to him for the sheer ease he seems to exude on film in any role he's taken on. He was made for the big screen and as you said, extremely easy on the eye.

Although these threads seem to be doing the rounds lately, and usually turn into list madness...

River Phoneix doesn't seem to get a lot of love around here. He was an amazing child actor, stole the ****ing show in Stand by Me and as he got older too, his acting in My Private Idaho and other movies really impressed me, his talent and believability as an actor was amazing and he would no doubt have gone on to be one of the greats had he not died so young.

Jack Nicholson, who I forgot, is all great, put in an amazing portrayal in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest, earlier in his career, a film which was full of amazing performances.

Edit: Brad Pitt was great in movies such as 12 Monkeys and Interview with a Vampire.

    Al Pacino.

Honourary mention to Joe Pesci. Doesn't always get the credit he deserves.

    Oh, and Tim Robbins.

    Ed Norton
    Robin Williams
    Joe Pesci
    Samual l Jackson
    Brad Pitt
    Gary oldman
    Pacino and de Niro
    Di Caprio

Robert De Niro used to be the man but he`s made sum rubbish in the last few years. Same goes for Al Pacino. I think of the new brigade of actors the best and most consistant would have to be Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, George Clooney has made sum good stuff in the last few years, Kate Winslet.

    Good call.

I've never seen Tom Hanks put in a bad performance no matter what role he was in.

He has the same 'believeable' quality of Jack Lemmon.

    A latter day everyman hero.

I think De Niro is totally over rated.

He played some great roles in the 70's, but apart from the odd film like Goodfellas & Ronin, he's pretty much hammed his way through the last four decades.

Bill Murray is by far my favourite

After he did "Awakenings", for about 10 years, his face seemed to be semi-stuck with the tics that his character had in that film.

My favourite actor has to be Michael Caine.

Admittedly, he's done a savage amount of awful films, never really acts (he is just Michael Caine in every film he's ever done) but I still think he's class.

Why oh why did De Niro have to do those Focker movies. Worst focking movies I've ever seen.

I remember him in that film with Sean Penn were they both played convicts dressed like priests on the run and while the film itself was quite funny , the faces pulled on that movie by de Niro seemed to follow him onto every other movie without the same affect .

It helped for the Analyze This and Analyze That films, he has been hit and miss lately mainly the Meet The ... franchise and the horrible Righteous Kill

And Dustin Hoffman. After seeing the first one, he really had no excuse!

    Unfair IMO.

Actors act in their time, based on the paying public's response two, three ten years after the movie's actors can get typecast.

A very lame actor who I admire a lot actually is the wooden John Wayne and a great actor for me is Ralph Waite, he [imo] avoided stereotyping and mimicking as he moved from show to show, movie to movie.

De Nero is a jobbing punk ~ he had never brought any character to any role he played outside the Deer Hunter. Now if he's in the cast I just won't watch.

Patrick Wayne Swayze, OH! I just realised it was a "best" actor ~ sorry.

    Erm, doesn't exist.

    James Cagney.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,311 ✭✭✭✭K-9

    All the usuals mentioned.

    Cagney was good and Robinson.

Brando was brilliant, O'Toole, Finney, Harris and Burton at their best were very, very good, at their worst, laughable.

Overall, I'd say DeNiro at his peak, exceptional.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

This, he wouldn't act his way out of a paper bag, same with Al Pachino who I do like but god he isn't any use at all anymore, he just shouts.

    Tom Hanks

Has to make it to the top 10/20 selection, time will tell obviously. I actually don't like him but he put in credible performances in "Saving Private Ryan" and the "Castaway" and "The Green Mile" ~ earlier movies were total junk and it's these legacies that make me dislike him ~ despite box office success at their time of release, 20 years time?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,388 ✭✭✭gbee

ONE VERY important thing to keep in mind is the fact that actors are chosen to fit a role ~ Conan the Barbarian comes to mind ~ I like Arnie, but by no stretch of the imagination is he an actor. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭Ouijaboard

Great actors are the likes of Pacino, DeNiro and Nicholson but they are just merely great actors. They just have amazing on-screen presence and usually use it well, sometimes brilliantly...sometimes they just phone it in!

Truly exceptional actors though are the likes of Day Lewis and Ben Kingsley, ...they may not have the star appeal of the top ones but they are what great actors really aspire to achieve, ...they have a versatility that Pacino and the like can only dream about. They are known as an actors actor!

    Anthony Hopkins.

A dedicated artist who really immerses himself "successfully" into various roles "The Bounty" "Hannibal" and various low budget vampire rubbish where he captures the screen ~

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,048 ✭✭✭Da Shins Kelly

As far as having a clean sheet, but a very short career that was sadly ended by death, John Cazale very well could have been the greatest. Only made five movies, but they are all classics. Such a shame that his potential was not fully realised.

Women seem to be absent from this thread ~ I won't mention any as I'd be a somewhat sexual attraction response.

Strange, but ALL my personal movie collection are male leading roles.
