Want to get fit/get muscular/lose weight

Okay, I'm 18 years old, 14 stone, 6 feet tall and am, according to my BMI, nearly overweight. Also, I'm pretty unfit in general too. Personally, I'd like to lose 2 or 3 stone if possible.

I walk to school and back every day (50 mins in total+ 20 or so minutes at lunchtime going into town so an hour and ten minutes) except on weekends obviously. I do some small weight at home, as well as sit ups and press ups (my ceiling for press ups is ~15, sometimes ~20). My diet is limited to a packed lunch for school, breakfast, dinner and maybe a banana or an apple for a snack. I also drink water, orange and cranberry juice regularly and try to avoid fizzy drinks most of the time. Sometimes i go on an exercise bike for a half hour but most of the time i don't. Every Saturday I also have a takeaway, which is basically the only time I indulge each week, aside from maybe buying a bottle of coke once or twice.

I'm thinking of going to the gym, where my friend goes, 3 or 4 times a week for the next few months. My weight at the moment is fluctuating between being slightly above 14 stones to just under 14 stones.

Basically I just wanted to know what you guys would recommend I do to get fit, lose weight and get toned, and what changes I would make to my routine to do so. I've never been to a proper gym before or made any concentrated effort to lose weight (Ive always only lost it passively) and I've been the same weight and fitness for years, so any kind of regime seems daunting as I have little experience with them. Should I follow my plan to go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, or is that too much or too little?

Sorry for the lengthy post (I'm new to this sorta stuff) and thanks for any advice guys :D
