Should I be relieved or frustrated by my orthapedic specialist's verdict?

If you haven't read the other topics I started, I have been having knee pain for months. I was waiting to see a specialist about it and finally got around to seeing one.

He said that I have chondromalacia patella and that I ought to have it for around 18 months before it clears up and the symptoms subside. I don't need surgery or anything like that.

However, I have damaged articular cartilage and impactual exercise could make it recur in a few years when I'm finally rid of it. I have to keep my hips, glutes and quads strong forevermore and wear insoles.

Should I be happy with this? I don't know how to feel. I'm glad that it's eventually going to clear up because I'm in a lot of pain, but the implications of the injury will always be there. Can that really be called a recovery? *Walking* is impactual, if only low impact. I'm not sure if this means I'll be able to walk without restriction again. I'm not sure how easy it would be to make it come right back.

Would you be happy with this? Does it sound serious?
