    Hi all,

i started really playing golf 2 years ago, as i had failed a year in college and when i repeated i had the second semester to do what ever i wanted. So with my dad not working as much and him playing every weekend, we started to play either every monday or friday or both and with a friend of mine (in the place i worked at the time) wanted to start playing as well so i went out with him to, to different clubs around Dublin.

I became a member of a golf club in Dublin and i got my HCap, now at this stage I was playing well, but when it came to the games to mark my card for the HCap I was shocking, I really let my temper get the better of me on every missed putt and every sliced drive. I got a handicap of 28, aahh how embarrassing i knew that i could do so much better and what was worse my dad knew it too.

in my early years my dad knew i had a kind of talent, i was obsessed with distance and anytime we were at the driving range i always wanted to drive it as far as i could and most times i did, but i never took up golf or any sport for that matter cause i didnt have the confidence.

i started to play sports in school first it was soccer, then Gaa Football which i found i was really good at and that gave me confidence, but i still beat myself up when things go wrong.

When I had the half a year i just wanted to do something with my time and golf was the answer. In the last two years with my club, i have only been in around 8 competitions within the club, either because of working on the weekends or not having the money.

In my first weekend out with the handicap of 28 i came second and won a prize and my handicap came down to 26.

in my next competition with HCap of 26, it was my presidents cup and i came second again and won some new shoes (Which i really did need) and my confidence grew and my HCap fell again.

my next few competition were medals and i played within my HCap and every person i play the round with says the same thing " your a bit hitter" " you should be playing off well lower" and that in one way gives me great confidence, but then when i dont perform to that i really get down.

a year had passed and i was in the captions day comp of my club and i played well and got my handicap down i was now down to HCap 23.

my next competition was the President Day, just before this i had read bob rotellas book Golf is a game of confidence and there is a chapter in their about a fella that wants to break 80 and how he did, it was by putting and chipping practice and not thinking of the win just thinking about his next shot.

so i researched up on chipping drills and putting drills and found good ones with paul wilson and for a few hours i practiced them and the same with my drives and irons, but nothing too heavy as i found out that my left leg is a 1/4 inch shorter as i broke it when i was young but it had made my back a living hell sometimes till i went to physo that year.

on the day of the Presidents Cup i was going around with a 12 and 18 HCap'er , so i said that i would go out and have some fun and i did on the turn i had 20 points which when we were on the 10 tee, i had miss counted and i thought i only had 16. so i really thought that i wouldnt have a hope in winning anything now so i just went and finished the round.

on the back nine if had kept playing the way i was i could walk off with 24 points which i only found out when i was on the 16th green and i did keep playing well, all together i had 44 points and i won the Presidents Cup and my handicap took another cut.

i am now a HCap of 20 and i want to get it lower, i want to get out of the job i have now and either teach golf or play it. i love the sport and want to keep playing for a very long time, i was 24 when i started playing for the club and im 26 now.

what can i do now to turn Pro, i want to get a sponsor i want to focus all my efforts on golf and getting better the lot. if their was an X factor for golf i would be on it or if someone big like Mr. Mcilroy or Mr. Harrington or someone like that to read this and take me under there wing i know i have the love of the sport to play for the rest of my life but i just need a chance.

if someone knows what i can do next or if they know of a golf xFactor please let me know and if anyone what to take me under there wing that would be great to. but really any advice would do.

P.S. when i dropped back my trophy there was a package for me at my club and it was from the irish times as i entered there competition for amateur of the year, and i was named golfer of the week.

Sorry, your young, but not very young. I would recommend you stay with your studies and study as hard as possible for two more years.

Do what you want then, but turning "pro" at 28 would be as unusual as turning pro at 26 off 20 Hcap.

Look it is possible, but about 1 in 500 chance.
Studying hard and getting a good job is about 1 in 50 chance.

Best of luck , but you would want to be off at least single figures to even dream of what you are talking about.

Don't want to be the I told you so, but trust me, there is worse to come on here.

But I do admire somebody who has a dream and does it.

i have a job and a BSC(Honors) and going to do a masters next year so will always have that base but i want more, i might never get to be on the PGA but if i got down to 7 i could teach and or turn pro!!

A friend of mine has been playing off scratch for as long as I have known him and has been a club pro with a few different clubs for years now, he has tried a couple of times for his tour card and has come close a few times but still says he is miles away from getting on tour and making a living out of it and the only way he thinks he has a chance is if he suddenly becomes unbelievably lucky overnight.

i "think" you have to be off 4 or under to consider being a teaching pro. Takes 4 years as far as i can remember too. There was a thread about it a long while ago - have a quick search and you might find some answers. Best of luck.

this may sound cruel but here goes "I want to become a Formula 1 driver. I am 26, I drive a Peugeot 406 coupe and I have manage to cut my commute to work down to 6 minutes 20.409 seconds. My reactions are also good as I manage to avoid the many cyclists that pervade the roads of Dublin. When I was younger I was brilliant at the Formula 1 computer game for playstation and was better than anyone in my class at school. I was also able to make the noise of a formula 1 car. I watch Formula 1 on TV and I reckon I could overtake just as well as Lewis Hamilton without getting in as many crashes. So what do I have to do to be noticed? Will I just send my CV in to McLaren, Ferrari and Redbull recing teams and see if they'll offer me a drive for 2012?"

You would be a very hungry pro playing of 7.

I would say come back when you are off +3 or +4

Can somebody be a pro off 7, that is wrong.

A friend of mine went to become pro in America and i would beat him by about 10 shots every round. Is it easier over there ?

I mean a pro should be a pro, as in scratch or below, just what I think.

If your a pro you don't have a handicap, so they effectively play of scratch ALL the time. They cannot play off below or above.

I want to be the worlds greatest lover...I'm 78,single and a virgin. I've played in many an open competition down through the years but have never performed in the majors. I shoot low early in the round but never seem to post a score on the back 9. I've never really had any interest in the team competitions until now.

I've been strongly advised to consider using enhancement products to help me perform - Is the bushnell V2 any good?

its always been a dream of mine to be a great lover

    Can you advise me?

Fair enough, you do know what your saying is open to ridicule , life is such. But you have a very high Handicap. I just want you to know that 18 is a tough handicap, 15 is so hard it is unreal and I'm playing for 28 years and find 11 and 12 so hard it keeps me up at night. You could be a natural at all sports. But do not disrespect low teen handicaps, so single figures is a rare breed of people , I assume you have calluses on your hands and have read every book on golf. Looked at every picture of the courses you can only dream of playing. Played in the dark and hurt your body playing.

Cried with joy and saddness at this maddening game.

Anyway , I find most pros a bit shallow and even missing something. I think that is what it takes to play 6 hours a day.

Your exempt from the qualifying if you hold a scratch handicap or better (from what I can remember) but yes you can qualify to train as professional with 2 rounds at averaged at +7 (I suspect on a course of their choice and not of the ladies tees at Deer Park ). From your post you imply it's as simple as rocking up and shooting the scores; and your qualified as a PGA professional do you know?

Holding a scratch handicap does not automatically qualify you to be a good teaching pro. A good understanding of the fundamentals and communication skills would be more beneficial IMO. Lots of good teaching pros (the ones busy) would tell you same, they would struggle to maintain a scratch handicap as they simply do not get enough time to practice. It's the same as a person of scratch getting married and having kids, they just don't have the same time to practice and maintain it but the fundamentals are still there.

i disrespect no man or woman, i think that what a person has achieved in any sport or life should be celebrated and no step no matter how little in the right direction is the way forward. dream big, set goals and it could make that dream a reality.

I think your next step should be to win a major. Try the Open or the US Open first. Winning either will open a lot of doors and set your career up well with sponsorship, invites to other tournaments etc. Winning either will also get you an automatic invite to The Masters.
Perhaps hook up with Rory McIlroy who I am sure would be happy to pass on some of his experience over the last few years as you settle into the pro golfer life.

Dream all you like pal, I am just trying to give you a dose of realism. I got to a handicap of 4 when I was 15 and I have been down at 4-5 ever since, that is 11 years. There are plenty of other posters on here who are at a similar or better level to myself and are a million miles away from being good enough to consider becoming pro. I can say all I like that I want to become a professional footballer but if I am not even the best player on my 5-a-side Astro league social standard team, chances are I am not going to make it.

if your not the best you find out what your weakness is and work at it then you will become better! anyone in the world can be better at one thing or another but sitting at the side lines and moaning about it is not going to help you and with golf the same thing you have to put in the hours in the right way and things could happen you and i might never be on the pga Tour but we can always get better

and that is what i am asking How can i improve? what are the steps to get better, i know i can get lesson but i need a coach a mentor, i am in no way asking for this to land on my lap but i need to know what to study before i can train.

off you go then, put in the hours, work hard on every aspect of your game to get yourself down from your current handicap of 18 to the standard of a professional golfer. It would be the greatest story ever - "age 26 he was an 18 handicap hacker, 10 years on and he is 5 times Open champion and world's greatest golfer."

my dad went to them and his clubs are great for him. its only €100 for the test that they do and they give you a list of what your options are and then you can take it or leave it.

in my opinion its a €100 save up and go out to them they really did look after my dad and his clubs are good even if he cant use them (Swing issues nothing to do with the club).

    Hi all,

i started really playing golf 2 years ago, as i had failed a year in college and when i repeated i had the second semester to do what ever i wanted.

I got a handicap of 28, aahh how embarrassing i knew that i could do so much better and what was worse my dad knew it too.

in my early years my dad knew i had a kind of talent, i was obsessed with distance and anytime we were at the driving range i always wanted to drive it as far as i could and most times i did, but i never took up golf or any sport for that matter cause i didnt know anyone, i know its stupid but when i was in school at the time i was beaten by a teacher when i was in junior infants, senior infants and first class and then again by another teacher when i was in third class, so with any confidence i had was gone.

My mam and dad tried there best but everything related to school i just shut down and then the same with sport to join anywhere again i would just shut down.

not until later in life around my 20's did i get myself confidence back, but i still beat myself up when things go wrong.

And the winner of "Post of the Year" goes to What!!!!
You would be better advised forgetting about becoming a pro golfer and dedicate that time to studying for your masters instead- spellings/punctuation/ grammar need alot of work

i am not asking for help with my spellings/punctuation and grammar i was never too good at school thats why i am asking for help with golf and my master is next year so again i have more time for golf, also i will not be marked for spellings/punctuation and grammar for my masters so i have nothing to worry about but thanks for the post

What!!! does What mean, is it a What not, or Whatsit, What's or even a not What for What or What to be.

Best of luck , I would say read Seve the book.

He had won 4 Majors and had been a pro for ten years at your age, so you could catch up , but it is a long shot.

No look it up, you can become

PGA professional (not a tour pro), with two rounds averaged at +7.

I would not want a lesson of that guy. That is only a bit better than myself and i'm no good.

Maximum handicap of 4.4, as per requirements in link below..the +7 rounds are a playing ability test.

this may sound cruel but here goes "I want to become a Formula 1 driver.

Funny post OP, unless you've excelled at other sports you have zero chance. Like others here I hold a low handicap and can compete with anyone on my day. I'm still a world apart from anyone who compete at senior amateur level or even on the Euro satellite tours, nevermind anything else. Unless you're off + by 16 your chances are extremely slim. Teaching pros are a dime a dozen too and unless you can make name for yourself it would be hard to make a decent living.

Was going to mention this too, being good at F1 or Racing on the Playstation now days generally means you would be decent in real life. It a simulation, F1 drivers actually use them to train for real racing.

I posted this in the other thread seems more appropriate here now
Ah he didn't do too bad though, still miles away from his target but his target was so unrealistic it's not really a surprise.

I don't think I really like these type of things because if someone is a complete novice they don't really know what they are trying to achieve, hence the unrealistic targets.

I would have been guilty myself of that a small bit, when I moved from par 3 to full golf course in winter 09 it only took a couple of months to start shooting sub 90. That progression was so quick it kinda fooled me. Picking up a few pars here and their and the odd birdie give the impression that it is not that hard. I thought "another year of practicing and surely I will be in single digits".

Unfortunately it dose not work like that, the lower your score gets the amount of skill you need increases exponentially in my opinion.

If 10 out of a 100 can shoot sub 80, and 1 out of that 10 can shoot sub Par you start to see a sliding scale of difficulty. I think people underestimate this the whole time in regards to golf.

People always seem to ignore two very important factors in golf too. Intelligence and experience. They don't generally come in a years golf. It takes time. These days the best golfers I see generally seem to be the smart ones.
