hopefully it will be on in Killarney

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Portmarnock, The European Club or Royal County Dublin. I hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭big_drive

When is an announcement due on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭denishurley

I'd be almost certain that it's Killarney again. It hasn't been in Portmarnock in ages, which is a pity

Just saying that Royal Portrush posted on twitter the other day that massive news will land shortly regarding the course. Possible Irish Open venue??

If its Killarney again I'll be delighted but in fairness we've had a good run of it in the southwest region with Adare Manor & Killarney in recent years, so for the Irish Open to move somewhere up the country is only fair. So long as the tournament actually exists I'm satisfied.

More likely it will be chosen as a venue for the British Open (?) as I heard talk that with all of the Norn Iron major winners that it was time to consider staging the major here.

    We'll wait and see.

Expecting it'll be Killarney, but would like if it was staged on the east coast again so I could make it out this time.

I think it should go up North - it's been too long since it was there. But I'd like it to go somewhere near Dublin so that I could get to it.

Supposedly Royal Portrush for the 2013 Irish Open - which will hopefully be a dry run for The Open in Portrush.

It was chubby that threatened that, Rory would be a brave man to skip the Irish Open especially if it was on up in the North.

Edit: Just after reading this. http://www.irishgolfdesk.com/news-files/2011/11/24/reality-bites-for-irish-open.html

Very poor show if McIroy doesn't play in his own National Open. Ernie Els for example makes a point in playing in his National Open, hes won 3 majors and still supports his own who helped put him where he is in the world of golf. McIlroy should make a similiar effort to help Irish golf, but money talks these days i suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 402 ✭✭The_Architect

Regards Portrush, rumour is that the R&A are considering it for 2018.

That would be a huge boost but we'll see. They have no real need to take The Open to a venue other than those already on the rota.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 501 ✭✭✭Aiel

Rumour i keep hearing is that it will be Killarney next year and then up north in 2013.Ive heard loads of names as the possible new sponsor but we'll find out soon enough i guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 238 ✭✭saintastic

Horizon Sports have confirmed that McIlroy will be playing the Irish Open in 2012. Great news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭jtown

It would take something else for Rory not to play in the Irish Open. He didnt add much benefit to it last year in Killarney. He was cranky enough around the place.

There's a US Tour event on in Congressional the same weekend.

    Confirmed...

I wonder does he know exactly the course its going to be on..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,431 ✭✭✭dvemail

Thats a massive boost, much better chance of securing a new sponsor now that they know one of the best talents in golf will be playing.
Its looking like it will be Killarney again next year, would be nice to see it being played on a links course though seeing as its much closer to The Open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭jtown

Another reason they changed the date so they could have it on a Links course before the Open. It will be in place for 2013.

I was just going to say about Killarney, could it be considered a good move in any way.

I'm no marketing expert but Killarney is a bit "meh", suits the fans who want to go on the beer and whatever but that's not what the players are after, not saying Killarney is a bad course or anything but the Irish Open is currently struggling(from a sponsorship standpoint anyway). Why ..?

Like I said I'm no expert but would the date change (in relation to The Open) with a switch to links golf not bring more players in..? Would more players bring more sponsorship ..? Would more sponsorship bring more players ..?

I think if its played on parkland in 2012 it would be a serious mistake. Also if it dose go ahead and go to County Down or Portrush the following year, whats the bets it will be a resounding success.

Even with the new date it's still an uphill battle against the PGA event on the same week, but you have to take advantage of the new calendar date and make some effort to move things forward.

One of the big issues for the players is access - unless you have the ol' private jet for Farranfore then most come into Cork or Shannon with a transfer on poor roads!

Killarney is a good venue that has plenty of accommodation for fans etc but the course hasn't provided a good test! Realistically Dublin is a better bet though crowds are always better outside the capital.

I really enjoyed Mount Juliet when it was there and think Fota was also one of the best venues but again the course wasn't strong enough!

Personally I want it to be held in Killarney as if it is our Amateur Team World Cup of Golf (www.worldcupofgolf.com) will be the last event on the course before it closes for the Irish Open.

Would be great for our overseas golfers to play the course a couple of weeks before the Irish Open. Fingers crossed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Portmarnock or European , but the lads would score very low if the weather (If) held up.

Should be in Fota in Cork again! Best tournaments and best golf and best winners have won there!

    Don't agree with best winners.

Major winners have won the Irish open.

I always thought Lahinch would be a good spot. A bit hard to sell really, but I think it would be excellent.

Killeen Castle would be a great venue.Just off the N3 so easily accessible from Dublin & experience there of organisation of SolheimCup.Plus it is a fantastic course.

Would go with that, would it be tough ?

The scores that won it in Killarney are way too low.

    Great place, nice course .

BUT. Great for trad music and getting away from it all. But getting there would drive you mad, like the locals, sorry . I'm in trouble again.

Killeen Castle would really be inspirational /facepalm. :p

Seriously though, the Irish Open is struggling for sponsorship and sitting at the bottom of a big pile when it comes to golf tournaments. Lamping it down on a course that's chosen because its accessible is not going to do a whole lot for it. I reckon it's time to think outside the box..!

The euro going down the swanny pretty fast and its 50/50 whether or not the Irish Open will go ahead next year, because if it's 50/50 whether or not the euro survives it definitely the same for the tournament as Failte Ireland sponsors it.!

How about this, take that top 100 list and then take the top 10. How about one of them. How can a course beyond them even be considered. The tournament is in such a state at present even to consider not playing it on one of the top 10 courses in the country is just silly.

Who cares if they are -25 or +5 says I.

They still have to win the thing. I'd rather see them compete over a so called easier course than one that they setup in such a way that the pros are beaten up and then they believe the members and everyday player wants the same thing.

Its the European Tour that come in and set up the course anyways. Killarney have noting to do with it.

Will get the club to get an email about the event out to members this month.
Mostly Overseas golfers playing in it.
But would love to see a strong show from the Irish.

Personally I think Killarney has it all for golfers and golf events.
Links, Parkland, loads of choice, amazing tourist attractions, the ring of kerry, food, craic, etc and this is coming from a waterford person. I just love the place.

In America scores can be sometimes -25 -30... Killarney wasnt that.

The club-house is a few hundred metres out of town along the strand, it's a very small town, so the main street and the town are pretty much one and the same, so it shouldn't be much more than a kilometre from anywhere in town, which is definitely within walking distance unless you're really lazy.

Guys, I'm wondering about tickets and transport to the Irish Open. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday seem to be sold out - is it a case of that's that, or are more expected to be released / is there another way of getting them. And I'll still probably go on the Thursday and Friday. How does one get there from Dublin? Do I have to go to Belfast and then to Portrush? I don't think I'd get there until about half past one if that's the case, would it still be worth my while to go along? I don't have a car.
