....on all forms of Christmas decoration and advertising until Dec 1 each year?
    I WOULD.

I love Christmas. It's a wonderful time of the year, but it should be kept to Christmastime. No matter what people may like to think it's not Christmas in November.

    Definitely.

Retailers gonna want to Retail though. Especially the last few years, anything to get them in the doors must be welcomed.

The people who are puttin decorations up this early are most likely the one who try show off to the neighbours by being the 1st, there's one on every street

If you don't like it, simply boycott any shops that put them up early and send the manager a note explaining this (or stick it on the front door!)

December 1st? More like 18/19th. Christmas starts way too early. Too weeks is loads for the tree.

Totally agree with a ban, I would even want it banned until the 8th December its way out of control now and starting to get very annoying, almost to the point where I now dislike Christmas and fell very Victor Meldrew for it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

definately should be a ban on ****e christmas songs on the radio, most of which arent even about christmas.....soldiers on battlefields, junkies in new york, ex-girlfriends (or allegedly so in view of what we know now) that sort of crépe

Absolutely, I agree totally with that. Our tree goes up 1 week before Christmas. But, I was aiming for a compromise.

if this ever happend, retailers will find a loop hole regarding advertising, their would some certain way to advertise and get away with it,alot of retailers depend on christmas to determine whether or not they make a profit be it clothes, electical, toys etc

They actually have laws similar to this in some european countries. Not sure on details, but here is one example: in Belgium they have laws stating when January sales can start. Shops can get fined if they put up SALE posters before this date. Not like here when the signs go up on Steven's day

A ban until AT LEAST 1st November - early advertising is one thing, doing it before Halloween is another thing..

Ban the stupid piped xmas songs as well, beside aren't decorations meant to decorate an area not make it look worse, so xmas decorations is misleading BAN THEM as litter.

Yes most definately. It can an awful time of year for some people and they don't need it dragged out any longer than it already is. A friend of mine is in dire straits at the moment over how he's going to afford Christmas for his partner and 2 kids this year. The barrage of advertisments from early Nov onwards doesn't help, Imagine been in that position where you can't give your child the Christmas you want to give them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,933 ✭✭✭Logical Fallacy

I was in Tesco the other day and they were play Christmas muzak that sounded like it was being played on a cheap Casio keyboard.

I can foresee a high rate of staff suicides this year.

Yeah, that's another aspect - one which I hadn't actually considered. Nice post.

I love christmas, but for fúck sake enough is enough. If you put your tree/decorations up in the middle of november and leave them up till the middle of january, that means it's christmas for roughly 17% of the entire year!
It's a 2 week thing at best - and even that is stretching it.

    bah humbug etc etc

technicaly, people who put up christmas decorations early in their shop or home are no less unrealistic or disrespectful to the christmas season than christmas itself.
the birth of jesus was never officialy known, and the christmas as we know it was a hijacking of the popular pagan festival; the winter solstice.
the only thing that putting up decorations early and selling christmas related goods make a mockery of is the season traditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

I agree absolutely. Why on earth would anyone want Christmas decorations up at this time of year? Wait until the 1st of December... and even that is a bit early. I love Christmas, but it is not even near it yet. It would be much more magical if they started it later. Seeing Christmas decorations and hearing Christmas songs so early annoys most people, not put them into a festive spirit. "Oh God, not already!" is the reaction of most people when they hear their first Christmas songs being played in shops, even from people who absolutely love Christmas. There would be a much more positive reaction if they started later.

When will the vast majority of people do the vast majority of their Christmas shopping? In those final few days, about the 18th to 25th of December. Will we do our Christmas shopping? Yes. So no matter when decorations go up or advertising starts, we will do our Christmas shopping, so the shops will get their business anyway. We are not going to do any more shopping because the decorations are up now or advertising started weeks ago. So the shops won't lose money by waiting until at least the 1st of December. In fact, they'd save money by not doing all that needless advertising in September, October and November.

The other side of it is that you start seeing decorations coming down and Christmas trees being thrown out from about the 27th of December. Although we've been hearing the 12 Days of Christmas being sung for weeks, people suddenly forget that Christmas lasts that long. People start asking you "How was your Christmas?" as early as the 26th of December. I always answer "Not too bad, so far." After all it is only getting started, so you can't say how it was until after it is finished. So we have the crazy situation of people starting Christmas way before it begins, and ending it long before if finishes.

Christmas is wonderful, but let's wait until near Christmas before we start it and then let it go on throughout Christmas. For a change, it would be lovely to have Christmas, during Christmas. So when you see people on the 7th of January, then you can start to ask "How was your Christmas?"

I agree, I can understand that retailers want to extend the period of Christmas spending but really.. really do we need advertisements and decorations to remind us to spread out our spending, we're not that stupid.

This, like many other things need to be regulated in this county.

I declare the Department of Christmas Cheer.

I agree. I think anyone who enjoys something or does something that I don't, or who goes about it in a way I wouldn't should be treated as a criminal. I support laws to mandate everyone do what I do.

I also think not going to Church should be illegal. And pre-marital sex should be illegal. I also think suit jackets and tennis shoes should be illegal. And fish, I don't like fish, it should be illegal.

Ugh my neighbours have started Stage 2 of their decorations today. Stage 1 was the window decorations, 2 is the porch, 3 will be the outside lights. Makes my house look miserable!

Around now is fine for getting Christmassy IMO but early November I don't agree with - not to be a killjoy, I love Christmas, but because it's more fun if there's a longer build-up to it.

I agree. December 1st should be the date people start sticking up decorations and such. Before that is too early. My housemates are currently playing Christmas songs, and it's driving me crazy. I absolutely love Christmas, but I feel like it kinda ruins the magic if people are celebrating waaay before it's time. I'm bored of the songs and the decorations by the time Christmas has actually arrived.
