    Is anyone watching this tonight?

Charlie Chawke and some publican friends complaining about the cheap drink being sold, apparently they are worried about the welfare of youngsters getting drunk at home.

Safer to get tanked up in the pub eh lads???

A publican on complaining about the effects that drinking will have on the youth.. has the world turned on it's head..

Sickening spin... bunch of moaning minnies pretending they're worried about da yung peeple.

[edit] and that's coming from someone who thinks this country is destroyed with drink...but minimum pricing won;t fix it.

The Frontline went out last Thursday night drinking on tax payers money.. Could they not have got 20 cans of Heineken down in Lidl for 25 euros.. :)

If anyone seriously believes Publicans care about the welfare of youngsters rather than their own failing businesses, they must have been on the hard stuff.

its some cheek though really, social commentators of the day with peoples welfare at heart are the publicans.

If they had there way they would make it illegal to drink anywhere but a pub.

Could they not have given the name of that Rathmines Off-Licence where they got the cheap drink?

Supposed to be a Public Service Broadcaster

Anybody see the bouncer at one of the clubs ,looked like Makikomi,if that's him in his avatar :-)

See the like of Chalk and the rest shouldn't be first on to say their pieces like that...if it's about health and social issues then some people with relevant qualifications and background to introduce the issues would be a lot more worthwhile... publicans should be asked in passing later in the show.

To see Kenny Egan talk about alcoholism makes my blood boil. A real serious issue and you have this clown feeding off it for attention.

He went on a couple of heavy benders and all of a sudden hes an alcoholic.

Pat should ask him about his decision to launch his autobiography in Krystal nightclub a couple of weeks ago.

    Poor couple. :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

Is the discussion about drink or about cheap drink????? I mean Kenny Egan NEVER went to Lidl and bout 30 cans and drank them at home.. The whole idea was that he would head off and drink in a PUB somewhere... So his testimony is not really relevant to the discussion on cheap drink..

They're two seriously broken parents. Sadness written all over their faces.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,585 ✭✭✭✭Lady Chatterton

That poor couple have been to hell and back :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Those parents look completely worn down...

Shortall is on the panel...I do hope this is somewhat balanced instead of being a hachtet job.

It's all over the place, Jon.

Sounds like Kenneth Egan's story was shoehorned in so they could use his name in the trailer, and he could get some publicity.

But it's a completely different story from that being discussed on the rest of the show.

I kind of feel a bit bad here.. drinking my 15 bottles of Stella that I got for a tenner down in Lidl..

I remember that barman from The Goat, and he was far from friendly when I used to drink down there.. He didnt offer to give me his purported counselling services when I didnt have a smile on my face..

She would be great fun down the pub:rolleyes:

I think the bigger offence was forcing Tubridy on The Queen, not the pint of Guinness

Damn I never knew alcohol was such an evil. Oh no, it's actually that Roisin Shortall has no idea what the hell she's talking about.

This is so depressing. She hasn't a clue.

Egan never had a "drink problem" full stop. He had a problem being up his own arse thinking he was a big shot.

    Too different problems entirely.

Jesus that was hard hitting about that couple losing their son.

The northern fleet will be busy this christmas.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Has that much really changed in all these years? I was a foolish drinker in the 90's and early 2000's...there was no hassle getting drink then, it was cheaper in the offie than the pub, ID was asked for just as much back trhen... we all got pissed on spirits and did pre-drinks in someone;s house before going out...

    What has really changed?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭Skid

Roisin Shortall made a ridiculous statement there.

Ban on low cost alcohol won't affect moderate drinkers?

It affects everyone who enjoys cheap drink (who can't get to the North)

Don't put the price up so it's out of reach of young people. Crucify the people who sell it to them. Make them pariahs and make the consequences severe.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

well I think it was more "coping with fame" .. or as he said himself, the come down after the Olympics...

Kenny's probably not gonna qualify for the Olympics next year either.. he went up to Heavyweight to try to sidestep Joe Ward (who took his Irish Lightweight Title last year), but has recently stepped back down to Light Heavyweight ... And this is probably his last chance for another Olympic medal...

The alcohol dependent drinker won't let silly crap like the price get in their way...it means they eat less or live in the cold or neglect something else...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,425 ✭✭✭telekon

    Only turned it on now.

Did they really have to get a 'celebrity' publican like Charlie Chawk to make the argument? Is there no other publicans out there willing to come on the programme?

Good ol' Charlie Chawk seems to be the Harry Crosbie or Louie Copeland of the publican world in the eyes of RTE ...ffs, the amount of free marketing these lads get is shocking.

The nanny state strikes again. We don't have a serious problem with drinking in this country. We have a serious problem with a lack of jobs in this country and a serious problem with panels being stuffed with establishment stooges and special interests.

"We're all drinking too much" .

Is that the same 'we' who all partied too much in the boom?

    Speak for yourself, Roisin Shortall.

No we dont. The problem is in how special interests like the greedy publicans and politicians bought and paid for by the vintners association exploit everyone else in the wallet because of the problems of a tiny minority. And the problem is in how laws are made and then ignored. Nobody on that show gives a crap about alcoholics. They only care about their snouts in the trough and the proposed measures are designed to feed those snouts. The rest is pure vested interest propaganda.

If Roisín Shortall is so worried about people's health, why does the Government cream the tax off cigarettes instead of just banning smoking outright.. ??

Stop crapping on about how cheap it is. That isn't going to solve the 'culture'. You need to address the social attitudes to alcohol. Simply putting up the price is going to solve very little.

I can't believe that a supposedly educated person can't see that yes we do have a big problem with alcohol in this country but it needs to be solved in a more intelligent and well thought out manner than simply upping the price.

    That doesn't solve anything.

Can't really think of any sensible solution to this without punishing everyone...what if you bought your alcohol at double the price but the extra paid went in to your pension which you got at 65, if your a cronic alcoholic you won't make it to 65, if your sensible you will and get your money back :D

her words ' we are all drinking too much' she has just insulted the whole lot of us, including the likes of me who have a few drinks about one saturday night in the month, so now she want to stop the likes of that, how ignorant

ah to be fair, she's right..... *cracks open another bottle*

RTE aren't helping with their Autumn Schedule. The Social with Craig Doyle, PJ Gallagher, Francis Brennan's 'I can't believe it's not Coach-Trip' etc etc
    All dreadful programmes

You would need something to get you through the evenings.

yes we do have a drink problem. Some people who have a problem don't even know they do.

The amount of bottles of wine being drank tonight id imagine are in their thousands.

And thats probably just one night of the week.

Its very naive to say the country doesn't have a drink problem.

Why don't RTÉ ban all alcohol advertising across its stations.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,719 ✭✭✭DB10

Sad. Looking at whos in charge in this country you can see we are going nowhere.

Cant believe these people running the country dont realise this price change wont make a difference.

As for the dozens of pub owners on the show, and endless made up statistics, it's disgraceful
