Yeah I've always heard people talking about the hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride in shampoo but seeing it written is a real eye opener. Who knew there was a h in chloride?

    Corps. As In Marine Corps.

I know its a French word but still its pronounced 'core' and we have an english spelling for it, c-o-r-e. So using corps is rather silly.

I once heard some eejit of a talking head on one of those Channel Four Top 100 Whatever shows actually pronounce the p - like p-neumatic. On a TV programme. Recorded for posterity.

He must have got such a slagging for that. :D

    What, at 19:15?

On topic, I generally encounter words in written form before I hear them spoken. On several occasions I'd try to drop a mildly obscure word in conversation only to realise I have no idea how to correctly pronounce it.

Really? I think it's rather onomatopoeic.

    choir
While my spelling is generally very good, the word choir BLEW MY MIND when I realised how it was spelled.

Conversely, deus ex machina was one I couldn't pronounce at all until a friend humiliated me entirely by pointing out extremely loudly that I'd pronounced it wrong and then called me a tool.

I saw the word hyperbole and knew what it meant before I ever heard it pronounced. Hence, the first time I said it, I said "Hyperboll" :o:D
