The DICE team are hard at work supporting Battlefield 3. To date, we have implemented several server updates to improve stability and performance. Next week we are publishing a significant Battlefield 3 client update for the PC. Console patches take a bit longer due to the certification requirements for console content, but it will follow shortly after the PC update.

So what’s in the PC patch? You’ll see improved polish, stability, weapons balancing, squad control functionality, user interface enhancements, and several feature enhancements that address feedback the community has provided to date – plus we’re removing the so called “negative mouse acceleration” that some of you have experienced.

Regarding cheating and boosting, we continue to analyze data to identify and hold accountable (ban, wipe stats) players that cheat or boost. We’ve received questions about what to do when faced with unsportsmanlike conduct in Battlefield 3 – the best course of action is to click the warning sign next to their profile name in Battlelog, or head to the EA Help Desk and report your issue. These leads will enable us to follow up on the report.

We appreciate all the feedback. Keep it coming to help us with future improvements. Check back next week to confirm the patch launch date and the detailed fix list. Thanks for playing and sharing your feedback with us!

    Sounds good.

-- A detailed look at Squad refinements

A detailed look at Squad refinements

Today's PC client patch features numerous tweaks to Squad functionality and is part of our ongoing efforts to make it easier to play with friends and Platoon mates. These changes will also be implemented for consoles when we release the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 updates shortly. Stay tuned for the exact date of the console updates.

First, we need to look at how joining with Squads and Platoons affects the balance of teams. Initially, servers are commanded to equal out each side, so joining with friends can impact that balance while joining with Platoons further hinders this. As a result we have made some adjustments to the in-game Squad management screen.

For PC, you are now able to highlight the various Squads and select which one you wish to join by selecting a Squad and then clicking the Join Squad button. Please note that the Squad Privacy option still allows 2 man Squads which, during 64 player sessions, can lead to players with no squad position –- the number of people with no Squads will be shown at the bottom of the Squad selection list.

After the patch is applied to consoles (in the near future) you will be able to join Squads by cycling through the list and selecting which Squad you wish to join.

So where the fudge is the nerf for the tack light, IRNV scopes, f2000 ? Shot guns didn't get a look in either, no increase of power or decrease in spread over short distances. Some awesome changes though, just not all inclusive of some of the biggest concerns I've personally heard the BF3 community request.

Whats the time frame on the next patch I wonder ???

    • Improved loading times for certain textures
    • You should no longer be able to damage a friendly vehicle when sitting in an open position

    • Spawn protection now should work in Conquest. You should no longer spawn on points too close to enemies
    • You should no longer spawn too close to enemies in TDM and SQDM

    • Fixed a problem regarding keybindings while playing

Uh.... so we'll have more to complain about?
    • You should now get a better error message when being disconnected via Battlelog

Awesome. Maybe a 24 plane Caspian server?
    • Support for unranked servers. Unranked servers do not report players' scores to Battlelog, but server administrators can freely control all settings

No mention of flashlight nerf either, which I find odd since I thought that fix was completed on dice's side.

Only played it briefly, I wasnt happy with the anti air nerf, jets and choppers were raping caspian border, granted they were good pilots but anti air misiles felt useless since even when you hit them, they just fly away, reapir and then come back. I really dont know wjhy dice nerfed it.

The skar is fine imo, didnt really feel under powered

Scar was very noticably overpowered imo

Games like this are shockingly difficult to balance at times with all the various weapons, to ensure they all dont act the same.

Happy enough with it, they seemed to nail most of the major things on the head.

Flashlight is not OP btw...and I really dont see how people can say it is, get a surefire light put in your face from 5 feet, 20 feet, then 30 feet, then further and further, you genuinelly dont see ****.

The disadvantages is seeing someone coming a mile away unless they have some good control of the T button.

I was happy with AK74SU and M4 didnt get touched, stupidly OP in my view, espeically the AK74SU

I haven't even been near pc today. Does it improve stability of the game? Any performance improvements?

Haven't used scar, but I heard alot about it being op. g36c is for me, thank you very much.

Tactical light is grand. It's really a double edged sword. It can really help and really feck you up. I haven't used it anyway, but I don't want it to be changed.

Where the hell irnv nerf? I played Xbox version today for a bit and everyone were using irnv. If someone haven't had it, it was because they did not unlocked it.

Really looking forward to party system improvements. If was idiotic! 4 of us wanted to join squad deathmatch. It's really fun when all squad is made out of your friends and all on vent. Stupid system joined us to a server and puted each of us in to different squads.... Facepalm...

Turn off your antivirus and try it. I have a problem with antivir at the moment. its blocking the BF3 exe so just shuts down. Could be related once you hit server side.

I assume you have tried to use Origin's repair option?

I wouldn't put much faith in Origin to fix commonly reported bugs in the game.

Roll on Patch 2, I don't see much difference, other than a little less stability when starting a new game.

    I tried

    updating punkbuster manually
updating graphics driver to latest version
    turning off Microsoft security essentials
    using the origin repair option
uninstalling the game and reinstalling it again

Still freezing a few seconds after I enter a server and I have to ctrl+alt+del to get control of my pc , at that stage a msg is on the screen saying bf3 has stopped working ( nooo ... really ? I would never have guessed )

Still getting the "Battlefield has stopped working" crash every first time launch, then when I try again i get "cannot connect to server(1)" then 3rd time i get in. Happens 80% of the time! Pain in the arse!

Exactly the same thing happens to me. Third attempt is usually the charm!
Do you have any trouble with your microphone? I know for fact mine works perfectly, but 90% of the time wont work with BF3.

But Battlefield 3 dont seem to like it much. This has an 1/8" jack for both mic and phones. I read that USB sets are more suited? Let me know how you get on with your new one.

After loads of reading in the forums I came across this : I hadn't been able to play since the patch , game would freeze about 30 seconds after I deployed . I did what's recommended here and I just played two full rounds no problem .

It seems to be for windows 7 32 bit only : someone with a more techie brain might be able to explain the whys and wherefores .
NOT 100% GUARANTEED, BUT PRETTY GOOD NONETHELESS - MANY PEOPLE REPORTING SUCCESS.

    *******************32BIT ONLY - SORRY TO 64BIT USERS***********************

I've been having the crash problem - games in MP crashing in ~5mins, and SP crashing every so often. Found the solution from another game actually where I was having a similar problem - Empire: Total War.

BE AWARE, THIS IS ONLY A WORKAROUND - THE ISSUE STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THIS IS A FIX FOR THOSE RUNNING 32BIT WINDOWS 7 AND WINDOWS VISTA WITH 4GB RAM OR MORE.

From here on, I'm copy-pasting the instructions. This works for both Vista and W7. Got me through 20mins of MP for the first time though - longest game I've had. Haven't tested for longer.

    What does it do?
It has to do two things that both rely on each other to work. For 32 bit operating systems we have to tell the operating system it can use more than 2GB user address space, 2.5GB actually, while leaving 1.5Gb for the kernel. We also have to set the Empire.exe executable to be allowed to address beyond the 2GB ceiling.

64 bit OS users don't have to do anything.

    What does it help with?
This is not the solution for all crashes. It deals primarily with the crash to desktop that is caused by lack of virtual address space.Due to the unique nature of how addresses are mapped differently on each machine this crash may happen at different places and times of the game, even loading a map, menu or waiting on an AI turn. If you try this fix, and you follow directions properly, and it doesn't help you then your crash is due to something else.

    How do I do it?
Follow directions explicitly. I have seen people consistently skip steps or not read the directions properly so it doesn't work for them whne they don't do what it says. it's not as complicated as it sounds, I'm just being thorough.

APPLY THE WORKAROUND (juicy caramel center)

    Requirements

Only real requirements is that you have atleast 2GB RAM. You don't need beyond that even though we are allowing addressing up to 2.5 GB. Also following instructions and being somewhat familiar with working with files in windows is required. Make sure you are using Vista SP1. If not then you need this hotfix that fixes a major blunder with Vista address space - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 [support.microsoft.com]
That's all, follow the 3 steps.

    1) Prepare the operating system to be able to use beyond 2GB address space with a userva of 2.5GB (only 32 bit OS's need to do this): I am purposely using only 2500 for userva for specific reasons and any more will likely not be needed, as a result the kernel will have plenty of space to play in.

    All 64 bit OS's
Nothing to do on the OS. Proceed to step 2 on setting the executable. 64 bit OS's running 32 bit binaries are also limited to 2GB application space.

    XP 32
    * Find your Boot.ini located usually on the C:.
If you cannot see it, you probably have system files hidden, then follow these instructions at microsoft (also uncheck "hide protected operating system files")
    * Right click on the boot.ini and choose properties. Uncheck "read only"
    * Open the boot.ini by double clicking it.
    * Under the section called find the line that says "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional...". Yours may look a bit different. We are going to make a duplicate, so that if you make a mistake you will not harm yourself from booting into your computer. Drag you're mouse across the entire line, right click and choose copy. Then right below the line you just copied right click your mouse and choose paste. You should now have two lines one after another that are exact duplicates.
    * Change the bottom line that you just copied with the following addition on the end. Add a space at the end of the line and then this without the quotes "/3GB /USERVA=2500"
    * In that lower boot entry you just made, find the name of the operating system in quotes and change it to something like "Windows XP 3GB", so you can differentiate at boot up.
    * Close and save the boot.ini.
    * Right click on the boot.ini, hit properties, check read only.

    Windows 7/Windows Vista
    * In Windows 7/Vista go to Start menu. Go to Accessories. Locate the command prompt shortcut and hover mouse over it. Right Click on the shortcut then select Run as Administrator.
    * In the command prompt type this exactly: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2500. Then hit enter.
    * Make sure you get a message back confirming the change was made. To verify the entry is there you can type just bcdedit, hit enter, and you should see the entry now listed.
    * Then close the command prompt. You just told Vista to increase user virtual address (userva) space to 2500MB.
    * Changes take effect on reboot but don't reboot yet.

    SUMMARY
We extended the user virtual address space in XP, Vista and 7 to 2500MB, so now applications can utilize up to that much if they are set to be Large Address Aware. While some 32 bit games/applications are set, Empire is not.

    2) Now reboot the PC because Windows needs to set the userva at 2500 which only happens after startup.

If you skip any step it will not work. When you have rebooted you should be good to go. Run the game as normal with the original game shortcut.

    TO UNDO THE CHANGES
For the XP 32 bit just delete the line from your boot.ini.
For Vista 32 Open command prompt as administrator and type: bcdedit /deletevalue increaseuserva. That deletes the entry.
Reboot and you are back to normal.

So I patched BF3 yesterday. Nobody mentioned the javelin nerf with the rest of the changes. Now when I play engi I have lost my awesome Javelin because basically it doesn't do any where near the same damage !!

Jonski I recommended this almost a month ago.Its been working fine for me since I used it.Seems to be to do with the fact that 32bit os`s qont address more than 4gb.

I can see the waiting for x players to join killing off some servers. why can't they do a bc2\bf2, no points can be scored until x amount join instead of just waiting there.

**** this patch in the ass !!!!!! Anyone else find tonight that the game is laggy as fook. Rubberbanding constantly, graphics glitches, getting stuck in stupid places like doorways, jeeps, and once just in the middle of the open. Is there updates being made on the back end or some ****. Game is unplayable ffs.
