any opinions on the cannondale cad 10 from ye experienced roadies? looking around at some roadbikes near the 1000 mark and ive pretty much decided that my first bike will be an aluminium race bike, at the moment im looking at the cad10 or the canyon roadlite 6.0.

    any opinions? any different suggestions?

I can't comment on the Canyon, but I ride the Cannondale CAAD 10. It is a fine piece of machine. Excellent frame. Very stiff, but comfortable and not far behind his carbon fibre frame brother. I believe, this bike rides nicer than some carbon frame bikes. It also has the BB30 bottom bracket. I currently have Sram components on it and Mavic Ksyrium wheels and I really like it.

have you much experience with cannodales? a friend whos a mechanic refers to them as crackandfails :D any truth to this?

Not at all. I never experienced anything like that, but I only have two Cannondale bikes. They are well made, the welds are smooth and the aluminium frames last long.
Anyway, there is liftime warranty on the frame, so if it fails, they will replace it for you ;).

Do you have ww200 on your sights?

The canyon has a wider gear ratio - lowest gear is 30 x 28 (f x r) which would be great for climbing. If you are used to spinning 34t on the mtb you might be happier with the triple. Can you spec triple on the caad?

I have two bikes, a compact and a triple setup and, personally, I prefer the wide range of the triples and would convert in an instance if the shifters weren't so damn expensive.

meh gear ratios wouldnt affect my purchase too much, i can always get new chainrings/cassette/chain and throw them on myself, the cad10 with shipping works out around 1200, is that a decent deal lads? roadlite is 200 less though  choices choices

    I've a Cannondale CAAD5 - 8-9 years old, took a hammering, still use it
    Also a CAAD9 - rides like a dream.

Love them - would get an alu Cannondale again any day.

Oh g0d I can see the posts now!

"Can I fit a mountainbike cassette to my road bike to help me with the climbs"
"I have fitted a mountainbike cassette and now my mech is dropping the chain"
"Do SRAM make a chain for a road bike?"

    ;)

I think I would rather have a Cannondale than a Canyon. They have been at the forefront of aluminium frame design for a long time.

I don't have a Cannondale because they won't sell the frames separately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,508 ✭✭✭Lemag

The CAAD seems to be the popular choice of alu bike over on Weight Weenies. I don't have a Canyon Ultimate AL but I would imagine that the CAAD would be more comparable to the Ultimate AL rather than the Roadlite (which I also don't have).

I picked up a 2010 CAAD9 with 105 for just under €980 delivered. BB30 so the cranks are actually FSA rather than Shimano. The CAAD9 has smooth welds which, in my opinion, is more aesthetically pleasing. The CAAD10 does not.

If I were looking to spend around €1200 on what would be my only road bike I'd go with a PX.

    Fitz,

The Canyon equivalent of the Cannondale CAAD10 is the Canyon Ultimate AL.

FWIW I'm getting the CAAD10 over the new Canyon AL, because A: its way better priced than the new Canyons, and B: I don't have to wait until next year before they start shipping.

The CAAD 10 frame is a gem, and is well up to any amount of upgrading later.

    Just don't buy my 56cm one !! :)

I've had Cannondale alu bikes. They are robust, light and handle very well.

I've also had a Cannondale carbon frame, which disintegrated. The experience with Cannondale was not good.

Canyon also seem to have a step down scheme in place for replacement frames if damaged while racing. Reports on their carbon frames are good (the new aerod excepted).

Was your carbon bike secondhand? Thus voiding the warranty.

CAAD10 105 £944 + £20 delivery to the Northern Ireland. You could then use DeliverMe.ie to forward the bike on to you for €22. I used them recently for a 42'' TV and have no complaints with the service.

Move on Tenzor07. This Icyseanfitz bashing is getting old and your responses are not particularly relevant within this thread.

You can also consider this retailer:

    http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/122817.html

Shipping to your door will cost you 39.99 GBP and I think this is the best deal around.

i figure its as good a choice for my first road bike as any, and the frame is meant to be top notch so i can always upgrade the stuff on it if im in need of a better bike, just out of interest how much does the cad 10 weigh? any idea why murph100 said not to get the 56 frame? im 6 foot so thats the size for me :(

The frame alone is very light and it weighs 1150g, so it is in line with carbon fibre framsets.
Cannondale never publish weighs of their complete bikes, but I believe the basic model is in the region of about 8.5kg.

Have a look at the new review of the CAAD10:

yeah its says the measured size for the 56 is 54  might just get the 58 to be on the safe side

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Murph100

Hold on there a sec. The 56 has an effective TT of 56, which is the most important measurement on a bike. If you're 6 foot like myself, that 56 will suit you perfectly.

The 58 will be too big a stretch, unless you've really short legs, with a long torso and arms, and even in that scenario, I'd rather increase the stem length, than get a larger frame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭smush76

It would appear that the measured size equates to the seat tube measured centre to centre, pay attention to the horizontal top tube measurement when making your choice, ie measurement A. FWIW my money would go on the cannondale too, good choice.

about the only thing i havnt gotten my head around with bikes is the bloody fitting :( if i can get the frame in the right ball park i can always adjust the stem/bars/saddle to my own preferences, its just trying to figure out the damn frame haha

btw any recommendations on cheap and cheerful spd's and spd shoes? no experience what so ever with them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Murph100

TBH the CAAD 10 is a fairly race type geometry, especially by todays standards, so unless you've crazy long arms & torso, the 56 will fit you.

If you're mostly long legs with a short torso & arms, you might feel a bit stretched out on the 56, the 54 might actually be a better fit in that case, but only if you've good flexibility due to the 140mm HT on the 54.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,418 ✭✭✭Icyseanfitz

my torso is a smidgen bigger than my bottom half but im pretty even all in all (as long as you dont count the belly thats slowly starting to expand the longer im off the bike :D), its decided then....56 it shall be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Murph100

The 56 will be grand so then, just get working on your flexibility and core strength now, if its not good, this will help a LOT. You don't want to end up with a tower of spacers under the stem.

I am 6’4’’ on a 56cm and feel like an elephant on a tricycle, what you reckon 58cm the top tube on my 56 is 56 and I think its too short but it may be ok as I know nada about bike fitting.

from the little i know a 56 is far too small for someone who is 6'4" anyway, you should have gotten something like 58-60

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,088 ✭✭✭Murph100

Yeah Paul Griffin has started doing a bit of mtb, but we're hoping he'll grow out of it !! :D

out of curiosity did someone in a bike shop size you up on that bike or did you order online? TBH unless your body proportions are quite mixed up that frame is way to small for you, like Iceyseanfitz said your in the 58/60 range, the latter being my guess anyway get some one to help you complete one of these to get a better idea..

Thanks for posting the links – my LBS sold me the bike at the time I was a bit unsure whether it was the correct size and said it to them but they said it was OK, after a lot of cycling and looking at other bikes and rider positions compared to mine I began to think I was sold a lemon didn’t know about this cycling community so I was on my own knowledge wise and had no idea what to look out for. Needless to say I haven’t returned to that shop.

I bought a Cannondale Supersix from Westbrook Cycles and delivery was free, They have 105, Ultegra and Dura ace equipped 2011 models here at reduced prices and the 2012 spec here. Best prices when you factor in free delivery. Ordered through Patpal and delivered 3 days later. Great service.

yeah you have to be careful, some guys will try to sell you whatever they have in stock regardless of size, a buddy of mine was sold a large frame mtb and he is only around 5'7" real bad idea to have a mtb thats too big for you as well

    ..cad 10.. ..cad10..
    cad10
    cad 10
    cad 10
Firstly, if you're to get one Icyseanfitz you'll have to start referring to it as a CAAD as in Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design.

Different bikes have different geometries so one ought not to presume that you will be a 58cm or a 56cm for every bike. At 6'4'' you are likely to be mostly suited to whatever the largest size of whichever model you are looking at. However, there will be exceptions to this. Your level if fitness, flexibility and your intended usage for a bike should also be taken into consideration when choosing the optimum size.

Heheh, Don't you start ! :) ... well TBH the weather up until now has been pretty ok, so the I thought the Storck would fair out fine over the winter, but after the past few weeks, its looking like I've been taking it off-road, not the best for silly unsealed Campag SR chainset !

BUT now I've actually just bought the CAAD 10 from Westbrook, which I thought nobody knew about until last night, sheesh is nothing sacred ! Anyways, it looks like there's more than one 56 in stock there, so Icyseanfitz will be grand.

Now I've just gotta get some Campag to replace the Japanese fishing tackle on the CAAD 10 :D

I wouldn't many about too long before actually buying that CAAD, there was a big stock of 56 in Wheelbase at the start of the week for the same price, and they had sold out by Thursday, so move on it asap, or you'll be cursing yourself ... and me ;)
