Well, I've finally managed it. Envelope from Co Tipp arrives yesterday morning.

Yep was busted by one of those Go Safe vans, so it's 2 points and 80e fine for me. Was doing 61kph in 50 kph zone. Was just at a limit change sign so would have had to slam on the get to 50 on time.

First time I've ever got points. Told a couple of people and I got a general response of welcome to the club! Seems to me a lot more people have points now, more than you would think, thanks to these vans.

So my question is, do you have points? If so, what were they for?

I for one intend to get no more, so it does seem to make drivers more accountable:)

How many points have you had at any one time? 13 votes

Yes,2 for speeding. They expire in February.

Think I might of got another 2 yesterday as I got very frustrated behind a car daudling on the road doing about 80kph.Overtook the car when I eventually got the chance and was greeted by one of the camera vans. I was deffo over 100kph but there was no flash so I'm not sure :(

    None.

Got 2 about 5 years ago but they're gone now. I was going to see "Man About Dog" in the cinema and was so thick after being stopped, I turned around and went home!
I was hoping he would ask me where I was going. I would've told him I was going to see a man about a dog...

Yeah I've 2 of them for doing 70 kmph in a 60 zone. The "welcome to the club" response was fairly common when I told people too.

I have 4. Got done for speeding twice. Thing is, it wasn't entirely avoidable.

I was working for a building contractor at the time. We had to have tenders for jobs in the submission office by 12 each time. I had 20 minutes to get from our offices to kilkenny. Got done for 68 in a 50.

Sticking to the limits it would have been a 55 minute journey. Needless to say, even though I was speeding, I still didn't make it on time.

Second time I had 1 hour to get from our offices to Galway. Normally 1.5 - 2 hour drive. Didn't make it this time either but got 2 points for 115 in a 100 for my troubles.

Both times was by the gatso vans.

Thankfully, these were both within a month of each other and are due to expire in Feb/March 2012.

Yeah that whole area around Clondalkin is notorious for speed cameras. Now that is unlucky. Friend of mine got busted twice for speeding and once for being on the phone, all in one week.

I'd say you'll be extra careful round there from now on:)

    4 points for me:

First 2 early in the moring March 2010 on slip-road from the airport to the M50/M1 interchange. Camera van 72 in a 60. I'm not very familier with the road and the sun was low and in my face so missed the 60 sign. 60 seems very low for that section of road.

Second 2 were my wifes. Car was registered in both our names when bought new from the garage. FPN come in and my wife filled in her details in the other driver section. We went on 2 weeks holiday and came back to find a rejection letter for the payment of the fine becasue it was completed incorrectly. Because it was now past the 28 days we couldn't re-nominate driver. When we rang the help line the said sorry but nothing can be done. So I ended up getting the points.

    june 7th, 70 in 50 zone,
    june 14th, 70 in 50 zone,
    Sep 1st, doing 70 in 50 zone
    Sep 8th, doing 70 in 50 zone

    Now that is unlucky.

No, That is stupid. 20kmph over in each case, time to start learning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

    I still have no points.

Wife has 4 though, both her being stupid - doing 75 in a 60 zone and doing 60 in a 50 zone. She has now slowed down, thankfully.

In 50/60 zones, I tend to stick to that limit. Much more chance of getting caught in those zones.

I think its unlucky considering im caught within a week of each other and i dont know ive been caught, so spare me the "you broke the rules,so your not unlucky" ****e

I was working for a building contractor at the time. We had to have tenders for jobs in the submission office by 12 each time. I had 20 minutes to get from our offices to kilkenny. Got done for 58 in a 60.

    That's unfortunate.

I've 2 for speeding as well; got done under the UCD bypass on the N11. Probably one of the most well known camera locations in south Dublin.

Zero, but I've been lucky. Don't fly about the place but I do push it a little on motorways.

2 points for doing 118 in 100.. Dualcarriage way had speed limit on the particular stretch I was stopped upped to 120 the following week!

I passed an unmarked car in the left lane doing the 118 and the garda pursued and pulled me in..Always wondered in this case where the garda didn't catch me with the gun, did he just guage by his own speed how fast I was travelling?

Would there have been grounds to appeal the points? Not that I would have because in fairness I was driving over the limit but always wondered. Does anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Cedrus

    Four.
First 2 for 138 in 100. After spending 6 hours in A&E with my father on a trolley, i got pi$$ed off with the hogs in the overtaking lane doing 85 in a 120 dual carriageway so I put the boot down and kept going past the 100 sign.

Second 2 for 106 in 100. overtaking 80kmph dawdlers on a perfectly straight single carriageway.

Insurance due on monday so I'm preparing for another twist of the knife as i type.

Two points for doing about 65jph in a 50kph zone. Must be about 7 or 8 years ago now. It was very early morning (before 6am), I was heading to a race, no traffic on the road. I slowed down a bit going through a one-horse town, but obviously not enough. Can't make excuses, I was going too fast. But it taught me to strictly obey the 50kph zones in the future and I've never had another point since.

In fact, when I got to the race that day, I met 3 other people who got points in the same spot. :pac:

I think a more interesting question might be; how many points do people have for offences other than speeding?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 538 ✭✭✭cuppa

Yea coming off M50 onto N81 heading to spawell most of it is merging 69 in a 60, anyway the letter was sent to my ex because car is in her name, so i went to pay and the girl in the post office told me i cant.

So my ex sends off letter saying I was the driver, and she gets a reply saying it is nothing to do with her anymore. Nothing has been sent out to me, so i ring the help line and am told it was sent out. But i never got it.

I rang on Monday she told me i have till Friday 5pm to pay it and she will sent it out again, its Thursday now and still no letter. What happens if it does not arrive tomorrow.

I'd get onto them. Fine will rise otherwise, and if still not paid, as happened to a friend of mine, a knock will come on the door in the form of the guards with a summons to court in hand. He never received any of the notices and ended up getting 4 points and a 300e fine in court.

Best to sort out as early as possible.

Got 2 pts for not stopping at a roundabout...even though your only legally required to yield to oncoming traffic and there wasn't any car on the roundabout at the time...next thing I saw the blue lights!
Insurance companies usually don't have an option on their system if i'm ringing for a quote for this so its usually put down as speeding!

Ring them again, and record the conversation on your phone for your own records, making sure to get the name of the person you're dealing with, and pointing out to them times and dates of when you've already contacted them. Probably worthless, but could be handy in an appeal of a higher fine/points or if it ends up in court to show that you actually tried to sort it out.

Could the person on the helpline not take your payment over the phone to get it dealt with for once and for all, or would them being able to do it be the sensible option?

EDIT: I'm currently pointless, mostly thanks to cruise control!

I've not one. But I'm waiting on the postman to send some out.

Passed one from clane to kilcock doing about 105 in an 80 zone.... I think I stood on the anchors just in time. That was three weeks ago, so I'm not too sure if I got away with it.
