    Hi All,

I am 24 and have an almera 1.5 I will be selling it and my budget is around the 3 grand mark.

Basically I want something fun and fast to drive , I also surf so convertibles are out of the question.

I have narrowed it down to either a Levin BZR or 1.6 civic dohc vetec ( cant get insured on a type -r) do yee have any other suggestions on other cars or advice on which is the better option???;)

3k with insurance? Or 3k for car alone.

I was the same as you :) insurance wouldve been sky high on a vtec and iv a full :( got meself a bzr, and it does stick with the majority of vtecs it has its battles with :D

Insurance is €65 extra to change over to a 1.6 dohc vetec civic , talking to a mechanic today he said the superstrut suspension always goes in them?

    RX7?

Not as blacklisted as a Honda. Its been my only temptation since my last car is stolen.

Getting a good one may be a harder ask.

    Seen this: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2475042

Jesus cant thank you enough for that info , I would have had to drive 5 hours to look at it!!! I got suspicious when I questioned him on the 185 bhp quoted and he went on about how great it was, and that it would pass the nct no bother!! Lot of Sh*teboxes around

Can you open the back windows on an EK4? If not then I doubt it'd be much use for surfing. Same with the Levin.

Why would you need to? He's put up three donedeal ads with Civics in them, so clearly they're alright for him?

My guess is that the OP assumes that the back windows can open, even just a lil bit for the board rack chords to go through. I could be wrong but when I go surfing, my car can't be used because of this.

I assumed he was just gonna strap it to the roof :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

It is strapped to the roof but the surf rack things are like a sponge between the board and the roof, ya need to open the back windows...or doors to get the straps through for the rear one.

I've never seen a different type of board rack so OP, if this is the type you have (bulldog is the one i used) then neither car in the opening post is any use.

Yah I presumed the back windows open , you need the back windows to open to secure it properly alright , yah the roof rack has the pads and straps that go through both windows. So they deffo dont open on civics or levins?????

I like altezzas too and was offered a swap for one a while back , but there gas guzzlers and expensive tax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

I've never been in a Levin but I'd be surprised if they did.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 Ger_G

Civic coupes arent too bad but I suppose same story with the back windows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

I dunno, I had a quick look about ten mins ago on donedeal to see but couldn't see any pics of the inside of one to tell. It doesn't look like they do. Does your car have to be the car that drives the boards to these trips? Like, could you not just stick your board on q friends car?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 Ger_G

I could do that alright , would have alot more options then I suppose

What about this has four doors and is not a 2.0 litre , quick and cheap enough to insure

I wouldn't say they're very cheap to insure. I couldn't get a quote on one when I was buying my Integra (that said I was 22). It's registered dodgy too though. That'd put me off quick enough.

    Not to mention the decals!

The car is registered just fine. It is a 1.8 and turbos are not put on log books unless they are model specific.

I doubt it was insured properly though and im sure you could find one that doest look like it came out of the fast and the furious.

Still looks like a good car though!

What kind of car would you be looking for fuel consumption wise? Subaru Legacy B4's can be got cheap now, they're easily insured and have buckets of power but they're fairly hard on the juice.

Or maybe a Honda Torneo SiR-T or Euro R or Accord Type R? The Euro R and Type R are 2.2 litre so tax may be an issue for you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 Ger_G

Travel 15 mins to and from work so no long commute but Id prefer below a 2.0 to keep the tax down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,594 ✭✭✭Testament1

Legacy might suit you so if you have low milage....very powerful car, 0-100kmh time isn't massively impressive but the 3rd gear onwards pull is savage....plus it's 4 doors so you can strap the surf board to it...cheap insurance too...just have to make sure the engine I'd in good condition as abused subaru engines won't last

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Flyer1

Why not buy an EK4, EG6 etc and put surf racks on it ?

Bang for your buck you won't go too far wrong with a civic. They are very good on petrol, they don't give as much trouble as a BZR ( superstrut, weak gearboxes, weaker bottom end if you intend to drive it hard ) and an eg6/ek4 will hold its value more than a levin.

    You'll easily get a nice clean ek4 for 3k

    Tidy looking example http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2668200

This is also very sensible http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2607023

car doesnt look too bad with the surf rack!! Alot of money for a 95 but thanks for the info looking at alot of civics at the mo alright hard to find a decent one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Flyer1

No one mentioned a vzr yet.

They are a seriously heavy bastard on petrol !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,689 ✭✭✭JimmyCrackCorn

28ish mpg isn't too bad provided you leave the oem air-box.

Considering you have a well set-up car from the factory with an LSD and plenty of power I'm not seeing the downside.

The only mods id consider after that would be tyres, breaks, ecu and an sr20 bottom end if you want more.

The car is much easier to insure than a type r and if de-badged not very noticeable.

You expect a loss in mpg for an engine with a lumpy cam.

i think EF's are the only civics with opening rear windows, same way as a 106.
currently respraying one with 1.6 single cam vtec.
for sale as soon as its finished..

GSR Lancer would probably suit you the best, pretty fast 1.8. There 4WD, so very good handling and very good grip on the ice, plenty of room inside, back windows open. The problem is, there pretty heavy on petrol.

More bull**** about Levins, they don't have weak gearboxes or bottom ends. They do however, tend to be driven by morons who don't look after them.
My Levin is 200,000 Kms, not so much as a whine from the gearbox, doesn't burn oil and still pulls like a train. The Superstrut has lasted over 100,00 KM on Irish roads too
