Problem launching Cheese

    Was having no problems at all launching cheese on ubuntu until today, now I'm getting the following when I run from a terminal
    (cheese:14849): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'cheese' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
      (Details: serial 145 error_code 1 request_code 138 minor_code 66)
      (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
       that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
       To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
       option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
       backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

    I've tried using the "--sync" parameter suggested in the error message, but it doesn't make a difference

    I can run video chats from Skype, and can launch camorama with no problems, but clicking on Webcam from the "Attached Devices" menu doesn't open anything

    If I try to open cameroid - http://alternativeto.net/software/cameroid/ - I get a message that there's no webcam attached!

    Running Oneiric 64 bit on a Dell N7010, if anyone has any help I'd really appreciate it

    Thanks for the advice, but it may have been a symptom of a larger issue, the laptop crashed horribly last week and is now in for repair :(
