So there has been some interesting trade activity.

    Ozzie Guillen to Marlins.
    Will Reyes and Albert follow?

    Pablebon to Philly!
Madson more than likely leaving now.
Jim Thome to Philly, probably short term cover for Ryan Howard who had surgery

So if Reyes went to Marlins, Ramirez could be moved to 3rd they are saying.
Then add Pujols to 1st...get JJ back from injury...

Marlins will be real contenders next year

I cant see them been able to sign both. Reyes is more likely as Pujols is probably using them as leverage to negotiate bigger deals with other clubs. Still I wonder what the contract they offered is worth...

I see the Dodgers are close to locking up Kemp, its a big deal at 160M for 8 years. The guy was stellar last year and plays every day, if he continues that form going forward it might turn out to be one of the better deals of the offseason.

As a Mets fan I hope Reyes doesn't go to Miami. I know he's definitely not coming back to New York but I'd prefer if he went to a team they don't play 18 times a year.

Looks like they offered him 90M for 6 years. Is anyone else interested in signing him?

Only the mets but they don't have the cash

If Madson goes to the Marlins i'll be pissed.

Dont rule out Miami for Pujols. They will incentive him to death. Major incentive being the lack of tax he`d pay on a huge salary.

Maybe it is possible he could sign there, I read they are offering 225 for 9 years. The ball is in his court...

I'm wondering is this all just a PR job with the Marlins and the free agents. They have a new name and a new stadium to promote so they are putting it out there that they are in for the FAs. But they are the only team linked to them at the moment. Surely that's not the case? I reckon other teams are interested and talking but just not standing on top of the nearest mountain with a megaphone telling us.

Yea its gotta be a PR job to keep the Marlins in the news. I think the Cardinals will offer something similar and leave it to some other team to offer the deal he cant refuse. If no team does then he more than likely stays with the Cards...

Toronto are going back to roots with their new logo. The Jays cap I have is now obsolete but I like the new logo much better :)

I'm a Phillies fan but am fond of the Blue Jays as they were the first team to really get me into baseball. That logo is so good.

Ty Wigginton to the Phillies. I'm kind of stoked on this. He seems a good all rounder.

Rangers won the right to make an an offer for Darvish.51.2 million.
Really interested to see how he plays stateside providing he signs. Also interested to see how he holds up with higher frequency of games.

The Rangers and Angels should be a good battle this season if he pans out and isn't another Dice-K.

I don't know anything about Japanese ball so how many days between starts do pitchers get?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭Crucial Youth

From what I understand they are less frequent than in the states. It might be a once a week job If I remember correctly. I only saw two games on tv when I was over there for just about two weeks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭Crucial Youth

Consulting Wikipedia the Japanese league is 130 or 135 reg season games.so about thirty less games.
I went to the baseball museum in Tokyo and it was awesome. My Japanese was fairly ****ty but I managed to get by and seriously enjoy myself. I was alone though cause people I was with don't like baseball.
    What's the deal with that?!

So the Cards are spending the money they had earmarked for Pujols. First Furcal and now Beltran on deals that are not that risky. If both stay fit and produce the Cards will be contenders again next season...

That's a hugh if though with Beltran. His range in the field is very limited these days and I think his best days as a hitter are probably behind him too.

True but he can still hit (.300 last season with 20+ homers and 80+ RBIs) and I'm sure Mark McGuire will work on him to maintain that sort of production. They managed OK with Berkman in right field last season so I'd imagine thats where he'll play next season with Lance moving to first base.

I suppose if he hits like he did in the first half of the season last year, he'll do well but I reckon that could have been the 'contract year syndrome'. His numbers were much lower in '09 and '10 when he was battling injuries and I think we're more likely to get that than his '11 performances. I like Beltran, when he was fit he always did well for the Mets so I wish him well but I think they should give him plenty of rest days to make sure he can last the whole season.

Bailey from A's to Sox. I saw his last pitch in Oakland in person. That's the same as catching a Pujols homerun ball in the world series right?

"@MLB: BREAKING: Athletics have traded Andrew Bailey and Ryan Sweeney to RedSox for Josh Reddick, Miles Head & Raul Alcantara."

Slightly off-topic but I know McGwire was the right-handed hitting coach last year and Aldrete was left-handed. I understand McGwire is taking over both this year but just made me think with the mention of Beltran, who coaches the switch hitters on a team with 2 coaches? :p

Switch hitting has always fascinated me, it's a great skill.

Delighted with the acquisition of Bailey, I was worried with the likes of Bell and Street already moved that the Red Sox would promote a closer from within. Not sure how I feel with Bard moving to the rotation but sure we'll wait and see.

Looks like some trade activity is going down tonight between the Yankees and the Mariners. Pineda for Montero plus some players is the deal.

I think this is a better deal for the Yankees as Pineda has the potential to be really good. He was dominant this season until he ran out of steam which is to be expected from a young pitcher. He was under their control for years to come aswell. Montero is unproven at major league level, not a great defensive catcher and going to a hitters graveyard. I dont think Mariners fans will be happy with this.

Looks like the Yankees also signed Kiroda so their starting rotation will look alot different behind CC this season.

Prince Fielder is apparently in Dallas talking to the Rangers. I'd love it if he went there (and not only because it keeps him away from the Nationals and out of the NL East) but because I'm really looking forward to the Angels v Rangers this season after their spending war this off-season and if Prince goes there, it'll take it up another notch.

Kuroda a nice signing for the Yankees too!

Yea, I think the Nats are not gonna give Fielder the money he wants. They already have 3 other Boras clients on their books. Werth who they overpaid for along with Strasbourg and Harper who if they become superstars will command huge contracts in the future.

I agree on Kiroda been a good fit for NY as I see groundball pitchers doing better at Yankee Stadium...

The Texas Rangers have signed Yu Darvish to a 6 year, $60m contract! On top of this they will pay a posting fee of $52m to Darvish's Japanese club. So that's $110m for a guy who has never pitched a single inning in the big leagues!! Dropping $110m on Darvish may rule them out of the race to sign Fielder who'll probably end up in Washington.

The Rangers have just signed a huge TV contract so have buckets of money so I wouldn't rule them out of the Fielder chase yet.

How cool is the AL West race going to be?

The battle between the Angels and Rangers will be great. You gotta think that one of them will be favourite to get the AL wildcard. Im counting out the A's who have traded away most of their pitching and the Mariners who havn't really changed their roster outside the Pineda/Montero trade...

In the other divisions, I dont see the Central been that strong, Martinez is a huge loss for the Tigers which will probably bring them back into the pack. In the East I cant see past the Yankees after their pitching upgrades. The Red Sox are a bit of a mess....

That will definitely fill the hole left by Wilson.I'm really excited to see him pitch and see how he gets on in the Majors.

Wow, talk about a reaction to a torn ACL. Wonder who will be the DH and the 1B between himself and Cabrera. Maybe the Tigers will move Cabrera back to 3B or even the outfield...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,384 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Wow, what a huge deal! And all the while the Nats and the Rangers were the front runners up pop the Tigers and land Fielder.

Yeah I'm surprised the Nats didn't throw huge money at him like they did with Jason Werth. I don't think Texas ever got into serious talks about it. They liked him but the tema co-owner said in an interview that he preferred Josh Hamilton.

I think Cabrera will move to 3B and let Fielder have 1B btw :D

Typical Scott Boras - create demand when there isn't really any.

This is what I would do if I were Leyland. Both are too young to be fulltime DHs and Cabrera has played enough 3B to move back there easily enough. I think thats the least he can do for the protection Fielder will provide him in the lineup...

Massive deal....couldn't believe it when it started popping up on twitter earlier. Seems that the Nationals weren't willing to offer more than 6 or 7 years given that Fielder is likely to end up being a full-time DH by the time he's in his early 30's. V-Mart going down for the season opened the door in Detroit for Boras to get his man a huge deal!

How crazy is the AL going to be this year with Yankees, Rangers, Angels & now the Tigers all eyeing up the Pennant?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭Crucial Youth

I'm very eager to see how that turns out. This is going to be a great season.

Not as noteworthy and perhaps a given that Lincecum has resigned with Giants and probably will make him a Giant for life given the contract he got. Theres something I like about a player staying with the one club. Probably why I like Utley so much.

Also I know its not going to happen but like the idea of Cain going to Philly. Not that there is need for him there between Halladay and Lee but.I just like him as a pitcher.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,687 ✭✭✭✭jack presley

Despite being a fan of an NL team, I'm really looking forward to the AL this season. Look at all the teams that could be in the mix after the off-season trades so far - Angels, Tigers, Rangers, Yankees. And the Red Sox will always be in with a shout as well.

25 days until pitchers & catchers report!

I would add the Rays aswell, they still have great pitching. I think they could do better than the Red Sox this season and even challenge the Yankees...

There's so many ifs with the Red Sox this season, as a fan I hope Crawford bounces back, the SS position stays productive and Bard stretches out back into a starter well (and also a 5th SP works out)

    Maaaaaaaaatt.come to Philadelphia.
That aside I didn't know Cain's contract was up for renewal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,626 ✭✭✭rockonollie

I like what the Reds have done.......adding Mat Latos, Ryan Madson, Wilson Valdez and even Dioner Navarro and Willie Harris as depth.

Should be enough to win the NL central with St. Louis losing Puyols and Milwalkee losing Fielder and Braun likelky to miss 50 games.

But is it enough to seriously challenge if they make it to the playoffs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭Crucial Youth

Orioles interested in Manny Ramirez. If he signs contract he'll only have to sit out 50 games.
Can anyone clear up this rule?he got done a second time for testing positive for banned substance and opted to retire rather deal with a 100 ban. Is it because he's signing with a different team?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭krustydoyle

So Burnett to the Pirates is a done deal, i dunno why but i feel a bit sorry for him.. He came into the bronx with a decent rep and leaves with his head hanging... no doubt he'll go straight to the top of that rotation and hopefully get his pitch back...
